2 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if He calls you, you shall say, `Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came and stood forth, calling as at other times, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for Your servant hears. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But he who is united to the LORD becomes one spirit with Him. a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. Shun immorality. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, What do you seek? And they said to him, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter s brother. He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, So you are Simon the son of John? 4 THE PARISH PRIEST S REFLECTION 1 Samuel 3: 3-10, 19 1 Corinthians 6: 13c-15a, John 1: OUR PHYSICAL SENSES SHOULD ASSIST US TO RECOGNISE GOD AND MOVE INTO HIS PRESENCE Let us begin our reflection with St. Paul s cautioning in the Second Reading Msgr. Gerard Kalumba on the use of our bodily senses so as to recognize God and move into His presence ; Brothers: The body is not meant for IMMORALITY, but for the LORD, and the LORD for the BODY. He who is united to the LORD becomes one SPIRIT with HIM. SHUN IMMORALITY. In the First Reading and the Gospel, there are two prominent physical senses that lead to God s presence, where two bodily organs are used to access God. The First Reading from Samuel has the Sense of hearing and the Gospel of John highlights the Sense of Seeing. Let us first think of how we misuse these two senses of ours to commit Immorality! How much of our hearing lead us to sin and how much of our seeing lead us to SIN? In the First Reading Samuel heard a call, but he went to his elder to inquire about the CALL he heard. It happened three times and he went to the elder to find out about the voices. How do we interpret the voices in our lives or who assists us to decipher what goes on in our lives. If the voices we hear in our lives lead us to Sin then it means that we misuse our body for Immorality and possibly we get the wrong people to interpret for us and we are misled. It is very crucial to 4 Remember, Rejoice, Renew relate with the proper individuals that will help us to decipher and interpret well. Samuel s Elder and interpreter, Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy and Eli advised Samuel to answer thus; Go, lie down, and if He calls you, you will say, speak, LORD, for your servant hears. Similarly the Gospel of St. John applying the physical sense of SEEING shows how John the Baptist pointed to the LORD Jesus Christ for his associates to see and follow the LORD: The Baptist looked at Jesus as He walked and said, Behold, the Lamb of God. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed JESUS, and they asked Jesus where are you staying? Their sense of seeing was leading them to the presence of God: Come and See. How often does our sense of seeing lead us to destruction and immorality instead of discovering the LORD? The sense of seeing should, direct us to the LORD and when we find Him, we should be eager to inform our neighbours. Andrew informed his brother Simon that they had found the Christ and he brought him to Jesus. Does our sense of SEEING help us to lead our brothers and sisters to the LORD or to SIN? 7 Is God Calling You? How to Know When God Is Calling You Finding your calling in life can be a source of great anxiety. We put it right up there with knowing God s will or learning our true purpose in life. Part of the confusion comes about because some people use these terms interchangeably, while others define them in specific ways. Things get muddled even more when we throw in the words vocation, ministry, and career. We can sort things out if we accept this basic definition of calling: A calling is God s personal, individual invitation to carry out the unique task He has for you. That sounds simple enough. But how do you know when God is calling you, and is there any way you can be sure you re doing the task He has assigned you? The First Part of Your Calling: Before you can discover God s calling for you specifically, you must have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus offers salvation to every person, and He wants to have an intimate friendship with each of His followers, but God reveals a calling only to those who accept Him. Throughout your life, God s calling for you will bring great challenges, often distress and frustration. You can t succeed at this task on your own. Only through the constant guidance and help of the Holy Spirit will you be able to carry out your Godappointed mission. A personal relationship with God guarantees that the Holy Spirit will live within you, giving you wisdom and direction. Your Job is Not Your Calling You may be surprised to learn that your job is not your calling, and here s why. Most of us change jobs during the course of our life. We may even change careers. If you re in a church-based apostolate, even that can end. We will all retire some day. Your job is not your calling, no matter how much it may allow you to serve other people. Your job is an instrument that helps you carry out your calling. A mechanic may have tools that help him change a set of spark plugs, but if those tools break or get stolen, he gets another set so he can get back to work. Your job may be closely wrapped up in your calling or it may not. Sometimes all your job does is put food on the table, which gives you the freedom to go about your calling in a separate area. We often use our job or career to measure our success. If we make a lot of money, we consider ourselves successful. But God is not concerned with money. He is concerned with how you re doing at the task He has given you. As you re playing your part in advancing the Kingdom of Heaven, you may be financially rich or poor. You may be just getting by in paying your bills, but God will give you everything you need to accomplish your calling. Here s the important thing to remember: Jobs and careers come and go. Your calling, your God-appointed mission in life, stays with you until the moment you are called from this earth. How Can You Be Sure of God s Calling? Do you open your mailbox one day and find a mysterious letter with your calling written on it? Is God s calling spoken to you in a booming voice from heaven, telling you exactly what to do? How do you discover it? How can you be sure of it? Anytime we want to hear from God, the method is the same: praying, reading the Bible & Holy scriptures, meditating, talking with fruit-bearing and patient listening people. God equips each of us with unique spiritual gifts to help us in our calling. It could be serving, it could be teaching, if could be encouraging, it could be contributing to the needs of others; give generously, it could be leadership; govern diligently; it could be showing mercy; do it cheerfully. We don t recognize our calling overnight; rather, God reveals it to us gradually over the years. As we use our talents and gifts to serve others, we discover certain types of works that feel right. They bring us a deep sense of fulfillment and happiness. They feel so natural and good that we know this is what we were meant to do. Sometimes we can put God s calling into words, or it may be as simple as saying, I feel led to help people. Jesus said, For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). If you take that attitude, you ll not only discover your calling, but you ll do it passionately for the rest of your life. Remember, Rejoice, Renew 7
