2 Page 2 Recently in worship we discussed Sabbath rest. The most fundamental meaning of Sabbath is a ceasing of all work. More than a particular day of the week, Sabbath is a specific time for resting from work. If you have compartmentalized the practice of Sabbath to only Sunday, it s likely you find yourself weary throughout the week. If you have neglected to practice Sabbath rest on Sunday, I imagine you feel quite the same. We need to turn to the one who says come to me each and every day and make Sabbath rest a part of the natural rhythms of our life. Also, we need to give ourselves and others grace for seasons of life which require much work, even work on Sundays. You might say, I keep the Sabbath law and so should every good Christian. Therefore, I do no work on Sunday whatsoever. I wonder then, do you ever go out to eat on Sunday? How about using your TV or your electricity for that matter? Have you ever needed medical care on a Sunday or spent the night at a hotel? If so, your choices are causing other people to work even if you yourself are not. If we truly believe working on the Sabbath is a sin then surely we can t possibly be ok with paying other people to do it! But we are. We are quite happy to get a meal after church and then turn the lights on in our home and watch TV; all things which require someone else to be working on the Sabbath. So let s offer grace for a season in which we or others work on Sunday. Remember, no doctor ever became a doctor without working the weekends and pastors work every Sunday. Sabbath rest is not confined to a particular day but a particular person, Jesus, and everyday belongs to him! HELP NEEDED Lunches for Habitat for Humanity Workers Our church has committed to providing the Habitat for Humanity workers with lunch on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The Missions Council is asking Sunday School Classes to take one month and prepare these lunches on that Tuesday. The lunch consists of meat sandwiches, bags of chips, cookies (homemade or purchased), 2-3 gallons of tea and paper products (plates, cups, & napkins). If your class is unable to prepare lunches, then a donation would be appreciated. The cost for these lunches can run between $60-$65. Lunches are delivered to the Habitat office on Hwy 70 near the Flea Market around 10:30am. If your class is able to prepare the lunches but not to deliver them, then the Missions Council has someone who can take the food. If you or your group is willing to prepare and deliver these lunches or if you or your group would like to make a monetary donation to purchase lunch products, please call the church office. Valentines for Kennedy Baptist Children s Home The Missions Council would like to send gift cards for approximately 20 children at Kennedy Baptist Children s Homes in cards that the GA/RA s make. Would you or your class like to help with this ministry? Donations to purchase gift cards may be dropped off at the church office by February 7. Please make checks payable to First Baptist Church designated to Kennedy Baptist Children s Homes.

3 Page 3 The cooler weather has finally arrived and that means lots of snow on the slopes for our twenty-two youth and four chaperones who are headed to Wintergreen Ski Resort February 13-15! There will be a SKI TRIP MEETING on Tuesday, February 9 at 6:30pm in the Conference Room to fill out paperwork and receive final information about the trip. Please be in prayer for our youth as we travel. We need sponsorship for a couple of our youth so if you would like to help please see Deborah Lockey. Youth Family Night is Sunday, March 6 beginning at 5pm. This is an evening when the families of our youth are invited to join us for our evening meal and activities. We ll begin with a parent meeting, followed by a hamburger supper, activities, and worship. Youth, invite your parents and siblings and plan to be here for a great family event! You ve waited all year for it and it s coming fast LOCK-IN! Friday, March 18 is the date, and 5:30pm is the start time. Invite your friends and plan to come out for a fun 13 ½ hours together as we play, worship, eat, and hopefully sleep a little! In addition to these special activities we have our regular weekly times of fellowship, study and worship. All youth have Sunday School classes at 9:45am Sunday mornings, Youth supper, worship, and Bible study Sunday evenings called F6 (Fun, food, fellowship, friends, FOCUS, and follow Jesus) from 6:00-7:45pm, after-school devo, fellowship, prayer called L.I.F.T (Living In Fellowship Together) on Wednesdays, 3:30-4:15pm at Panera, Worship Band and G-Force (mission projects and learning to share the Gospel) on Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30pm. So come plug in to these opportunities to grow in Christ and in relationship with other believers. Looking for fellowship, inspiration, and something that s good for your body and soul? Come to Senior Stretch on Tuesday mornings, now in its third year here at FBC! The ladies begin gathering around 8:45am to just visit and catch up, and the class, led by Phyliss Adcock, begins at 9:30 with a devotion followed by a great work-out of light exercise just right for senior adults. Talk to any of the ladies in this group and they will tell you what a difference being a part of this group has made in their lives both physically, mentally, and spiritually! Come do something that will be life changing for you and for others! Our JOY-Makers Choir has resumed meeting on Thursday mornings at 10:30am and we want you to join us (especially men singers!) If you love to sing, enjoy worshiping and good fellowship and inspiration, then come give this choir a try! It s not just about singing and leading in worship, but being together and sharing life each week as family. We meet in the choir room and we re praying that some new folks will join us soon! JOY Club Meetings are monthly gatherings on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This is not really a club at all, but is open to anyone who falls into the category of age 55 and up! Our monthly meeting is an opportunity for our senior adults to come together, listen to a guest who speaks on a topic of interest for senior adults, and then enjoy a meal together. We have a great time and even if you are a very young senior adult I guarantee you would enjoy this if you d come experience it. So come check us out. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 23 at 10:45am in the Conference Room. Be watching the worship folder in the coming weeks to find out who our next speaker will be. It may be Mr. Rodney Kemp, local historian and speaker, who has agreed to come speak to us again this year. Our youth go to Caswell each year, sometimes twice a year, but have YOU ever gone? You ll have that opportunity, Monday-Wednesday, May as we attend the Spring Coastal Adult Retreat at Fort Caswell. Be looking for more details in the coming months. Here am I, Lord send me. Our children are the future of the world. The type of adults they will become will depend upon what they are taught as children both through direct teaching and by example. We, as Christians, have a responsibility to teach children everywhere about the love of Jesus and to give them hope. Vacation Bible School is one way to do this. At Deep Sea Discovery, children dive into God s presence by delving deep into His Word to see how He has been with His people every step of the way. Every child will sail away each day saying God is with me wherever I go! He KNOWS me, HEARS me, STRENGTHENS me, LOVES me, and SENDS me! As you reflect back over your life, do you remember those special people who gave their time to work with you when you were a child? We all live very busy lives and wish we could have more hours in a day. God knows that. However, He wants us to put His work first and then He will provide for everything else to fall into place. Living by example is one of the greatest ways to teach others about Christ. When you volunteer to help in VBS, you are showing the children that Christ is a priority in your life and that you care about the future of their lives. ARE YOU WILLING TO HELP TEACH OUR CHILDREN? They need YOU! We need department directors and workers as well as general workers. Pray for God to show you how He wants to use you to teach our children. We were all children once and many adults took their time to teach us. Now it is our turn to teach the children. We can not let our children down by not being there for them. Please contact me and let me know where you would like to help in Vacation Bible School. Love, Diane Poag or dpoag@bizec.rr.com MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!
