Parish of ST. JOHN BAPTIST, BROUGHTON WITH ST. MARTIN & ST. PETER Parish Profile An ancient parish meeting the challenges of the 21st century in worship, prayer and fellowship. e Parochial Church Council's Mission Statement: We, the parishioners of St. John Baptist, Broughton, seek to worship God worthily and to proclaim the Good News of His love in words and actions, in co-operation with other Christian Churches locally, in the Diocese and throughout the World by our own personal faith and example.

1 Broughton Parish Church THE ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH of BROUGHTON... Broughton Parish Church 2 PLACE, BUILDINGS and SERVICES M6 Durham Workington e Ecclesiastical Parish of Broughton St John Baptist is unique in its size (as one of the largest 200 parishes in England), its integrated trio of worship centres, and its strong musical offering. e new incumbent will be welcomed by a committed congregation who dedicate themselves to the life of the church and its community. Although we are stewards of the history and traditions of the parish, we are looking forward to new ways of serving God and His people in this place. Bishop Auckland Penrith A1(M) Whitehaven An aerial view of the North West of England shows the village of Broughton-inAmounderness lying between the Irish Sea and the Pennines on the Northern outskirts of the city of Preston. Within an hour's drive are Lancaster, Manchester and Liverpool as well as the Trough of Bowland, the Lake District, and, slightly further to the southwest, the coast and mountains of North Wales. Bounded by the M6 and M55 as well as the A6 (a Roman road), Broughton is a major transport hub. e parish has a population of 16,719 in mid Its growth from the 12th century with a substantial church, two daughter chapels and two Church of England primary schools reflects both the history of Lancashire and recent changes. Just as the county is a mixture of rural and urban settlements, Broughton parish combines an ancient village, farmland and more densely populated suburbs. Wrexham Leeds Halifax Southport Peak District National Park M Stoke-on-Trent Derby A History of St. John Baptist Church, Broughton by parishioner Brendan Hurley (2012) suggests that a chapel existed at the site from at least the 12th century, and possibly earlier. e present nave was built in 1826 and the chancel added in e oldest part of the church is the tower dating from St. John Baptist Church Broughton Parish Church 7

3 Broughton Parish Church Between 2006 and 2011 parishioners, with assistance from English Heritage, completed a significant restoration of the fabric and interior of the church at a total cost of 207,290. A car park, (owned by and shared with the school), is situated near the church across Blundel Brook and through fields. Services at St. John Baptist are in the Moderate Catholic tradition, with vestments worn by clergy, lay assistants and Readers as are coloured stoles. An Aumbry holds the reserved sacrament and a team of four lay persons offers home communions for the housebound. Book of Common Prayer services attended by parishioners are held at 8:00 a.m. (Holy Communion) and 6:30 p.m. (Choral Evensong) with plus choir attending. Mattins sung on the 4th Sunday of the month at the 11:00 a.m. service. All other services are Common Worship (Holy Communion) at 11:00 a.m. with a congregation of 65 to 250 (Variations reflect school holidays, festivals, presence or absence of the choir) and once a month at the 6:30 p.m. service plus choir attending Broughton Parish Church 4 BROUGHTON-in- AMOUNDERNESS CHURCH of ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL On the second Sunday of the month, there is a Parade Service attended by all uniformed organisations (which cater for 340 children in the parish). On Wednesday mornings a service of Holy Communion (Common Worship) is held and the offices are said daily at St. John Baptist. ere is a Sunday School and a creche at 11:00 a.m. Broughton Church Choir Broughton Church Choir Services at the parish church are graced by the exceptional music of the Broughton Choir, made up of 40 boys and 25 gentlemen who are trained in the Royal School of Church Music tradition. Directed by an organist/director, John Catterall, M.B.E., L.R.A.M., and Associate of the R.S.C.M., and assisted by an R.S.C.M. organist, David Scott- omas, the choir not only sings at all major services, but also tours in France and the Isle of Man, as well as singing at Cathedrals such as St. Paul's, Chester, Liverpool and Durham. ( e parish raised almost 54,000 for a new organ and the choir regularly records CDs of their music. e church is fully accessible for disabled people, (including toilets), and an audio loop system is installed. A team of bell ringers ring for services. Volunteers maintain the churchyard to a high standard. ere is a Garden of Remembrance for the interment of ashes, but burials only take place in existing graves. A rota of 70+ sidespersons welcomes people to the three worship centres. BROUGHTON-in-AMOUNDERNESS CHURCH of ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL is next to the church, was founded in 1590 and is the oldest primary school in the UK. It caters for 240 pupils and was described as an 'outstanding' school by OFSTED inspectors in November Statement taken from the School website: Our link with the Church is very important. Broughton in Amounderness C.E Primary School is a unique place because we value the uniqueness of the people in it. It is made from the people who value the importance of putting God at the centre of everything we do. is uniqueness is enhanced by our quiet position on Church Lane, next door to the church. e children pass the church each day on their journey and visit Church every week. We have close links with the whole Church Community, supporting each other in fundraising, and in opportunities to work together as a Community. e Parish and wider church and especially the clergy help us to teach our children about God, life, friendships, how to treat others and how to carry themselves through life as kind and thoughtful people. e School has a regular article updating the community in the Parish Magazine, and the Clergy and other parishioners regularly visit school. A special and valued link, for a unique school. Please visit their website Broughton-in-Amounderness C.E. Primary School

MARTIN OF TOURS CHAPEL The Parish Hall CHURCH COTTAGE MUSEUM Between the Primary School and the church is a restored Tudor cottage owned by the school and used for educational purposes. e Museum presents a rich and unique learning resource depicting life through the last 450 years. It is open to the Public on Sunday afternoons from pm to pm, except for Easter Sunday and during December when the Museum is closed for conservation repairs. ere is a modest charge for admission currently 2.00, but children are admitted free. Admission includes the services of a personal History Guide. St Martin s Chapel Hoggarth Room (Parish Office) Jacob s Join evening In the 1950s significant new housing estates were built in Fulwood within the south of the parish. Parishioners rose to the challenge of catering for this growth by constructing a large parish hall complex on a site between Northway and Broadway. Since 1962, the Chapel within the main hall has hosted services. e flexibility of the space created by folding wooden doors means that St. Martin's caters for a 50+ congregation for its 9:30 a.m. Holy Communion (Common Worship) services and for a 25+ congregation for its 10 a.m. Holy Communion Services on Friday mornings, (followed by coffee in the Parish Hall lounge). Services at St. Martin's are more informal than those in the parish church. ere is a mixed adult choir of 11 led by a Director of Music, Susan Phillips, G.N.S.M., P.G.C.E., and a lively Sunday School. e Parish Hall is a hive of activity - used by the parish and wider community each and every day. ere are two Hall Managers employed part-time to organise the 25 external lettings as well as the many church groups and functions held there. e Hall Players, the Mother's and Toddlers Group, the Bowling Club, licensed social club, and numerous other groups, serving all ages, enjoy the spacious accommodation and grounds. Christmas Fairs, Horticultural Society shows, plays, suppers, concerts, meetings, courses and lectures are catered for. ere is a generous car park. A Guide Hut was also built next door. During 2011 a new area was created with help from a team from Kirkham Open Prison within the Hall Complex to serve the Parish as an office. e office, named the Hoggarth Room, is open between 0930 and 1200 on Fridays manned by a team of volunteers and it the PCC's intention to develop this asset in the near future. 5 7 Broughton Parish Church Broughton Parish Church 8 ST. PETER S CHURCH of ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL and CHAPEL As Fulwood housing estates continued to expand in the 1970s, the parish joined in the sponsorship of a new primary school in the Broadwood Drive area of Fulwood. It was opened in July 1976 and includes a chapel used by the school and parish. is 212-pupil Church of England school is a thriving and successful place of learning, also an 'outstanding school' according to OFSTED inspectors (October 2012). Again, clergy and parishioners play a central role in the school. Please visit their website: SUNDAY SCHOOLS In total there are 120 children attending Sunday Schools in all three worship centres. Sunday School Nativity A Family Communion service (Common Worship) with 50 parishioners attending is held at St. Peter's every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. is is also more informal than the parish church services and often a music group accompanies hymns. e parish has close links with both primary schools, but the incumbent is not expected to be the Chair of Governors at either church school. ese roles are usually taken by parishioners several of whom are Governors of both schools. Broughton Parish has been awarded the "Child Friendly Church Award" in 2010 by Blackburn Diocese. St. Peter s Chapel Annually the occasional services are as follows: Baptisms - 50 Weddings - 20 Funerals - 40 Wedding Confirmation - 40 Children are drawn from the church primary schools, uniformed organisations and the choir. 4 lay people lead classes. Adult confirmations also take place. Parish Gala at St Peter s Archdeacon with Rose Queen & Attendants Confirmation candidates 2012

9 Broughton Parish Church Broughton Parish Church 10 Although there are three worship centres, we are one church and see ourselves as one church community. Festivals, shows, fairs, parties and concerts involve people from all parts of the parish. Local shopping trips or walks around the neighbourhoods involve a lot of 'meeting and greeting' of people we know from church. is is a friendly and caring place. CLERGY HOUSING In addition to the extensive involvement of adults in the Parish, there are monthly parish lunches. ere has been a PCC Away Day to develop the Mission Action Plan and for many years there has been an annual parish holiday, arranged by 2 parishioners and most recently led by the previous incumbent. Parish Holiday at Sandringham The Vicarage The Vicarage e Vicarage e vicarage was built in 1886 and overlooks Glebe Land and the Church from an elevated position. It has four bedrooms, a bathroom, plus attic, gas central heating, lounge, dining room, large kitchen, office, utility room, downstairs cloakroom and cellar. It has been modernised and kept in good order by the parish and Diocese. e Vicarage is approached through a wooded avenue and has extensive grounds and outbuildings. Arrangements are in hand for a complete survey by the Diocesan Property Surveyor. Traditionally it has been the site of a summer garden party for the parish. e parish built St Martin s House, a 3-bedroom home with office for assistant clergy next to the Parish Hall in Northway. Unlike most clergy housing in the diocese, this home is owned and managed by the parish. It is currently let to a tenant on a 6-month tenancy as the parish has no curate. Holy Land Pilgrimage St Martin s House, Northway In November 2010 a group of parishioners led by the previous incumbent went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

11 Broughton Parish Church Broughton Parish Church 12 PEOPLE AND LINKS e Venn Diagram of the Parish of Broughton shows a vibrant community. It captures the diversity of activities available for all ages and many interests led by the laity in partnership with the vicar. Keeping the variety of services and other events going is demanding, but is truly a team effort. A full colour booklet called Welcome to Broughton St John Baptist has recently been produced. e Electoral Roll is currently 554. However, this doesn't reflect the wide reach of the parish. Expected weekly attendance at services in the parish is between 300 and 350 rising to 650 when including festivals and special events. Visitors apart from weekly worship are as follows: Occasional offices - 7,000 Museum in Church Cottage/Church (open during daylight hours) Music concerts eatre Group ( e Hall Players) - 1,200 Horticultural Show Social Functions Fairs, other events Broughton School 240 Children Church Governors Lay Chairman Regular Church Services Sunday School 55 Children 6 church volunteers St Peter s School 212 Children Lay Chairman Regular Church Services Music Group Members = 7 Sunday School Children 5 Church volunteers Ladies groups Mothers Union Members = 41 Licensed Ministries 2 Pastoral Assistants 2 Lay Assistants 3 Readers Confirmation 40 Candidates Annually 4 Lay Leaders Mother & Toddlers Attendance = 20 Hand bell ringers Members = 10 Bell ringers Members = 13 Choir 40 boys / 25 men Trainee organists for wider church Concerts - mission to 3000 people International tours training lectors/intercessors Uniformed Organisations = 340 youngsters 33 Leaders (16 Church members) Guides 1 Broughton Ranger 3 Guide Companies 5 Brownie Packs 3 Rainbow Packs Scouting 2 Beaver Colonies 3 Cub Packs 3 Scout Troops 1 Explorer Unit Charities Fair Trade stalls at each worship centre - 5 helpers 3 times monthly Church organisations are as follows: Mothers Union (41) Women's Fellowship (30) Church Club, including Bowling Club (329: licensed facility in the Parish Hall) e Hall Players (40 Adults, 10 Children) Mother's and Toddlers Group (3 leaders, 20 children) Walkers and Talkers (ramblers; core Group of 10) Choir (65 boys and men. Aside from the Incumbent, there is currently one Associate Priest assigned temporarily to the parish, one Retired Priest who regularly takes services and another Retired Priest who has returned to do services during the interregnum. e Archdeacon of Lancaster also takes services within the parish. Broughton has traditionally had a curate and we believe that it is vital to the life of the parish that there are at least two full time clergy members to ensure that we can offer the range of services demanded by the size and scope of the parish. ere are three licensed Readers and one in training. When necessary Readers offer Communion by Extension services at St. Martin s and/or St. Peter s Chapels. ere are two licensed Pastoral Assistants, one of whom is training to be a Deacon. Lay people conduct classes for the 40 children and varying numbers of adults being confirmed each year. In future new forms of ministry, such as a Youth Worker, should be considered by the parish to extend outreach to young people after the age of 11.

13 Broughton Parish Church Broughton Parish Church 14 ECUMENICAL AND WIDER CHURCH LINKS Toilet Twinning Project e church takes part in the Preston Deanery Synod and has close ties to Blackburn Cathedral and Blackburn Diocese. It is an active member of Churches Together in Fulwood and Broughton (CTFB) which welcomes newcomers to the area, distributes 12,000 Christmas cards and Easter leaflets detailing all of the services in the various neighbourhood churches, staffs an Information Desk at the Royal Preston Hospital, and hosts joint services, courses and house groups. CTFB includes 3 Anglican, 3 Roman Catholic, 1 United Reformed and 1 Methodist Churches. e re-instatement of a Finance and Stewardship Committee is required and will be initiated by the PCC this year. It will undertake a review of the recipients of the parish's annual 6-7,000 charitable donations for Walking in the Preston Guild THE FUTURE We look forward to working enthusiastically together with the next Vicar bearing in mind the difficult economic climate and the challenges facing the local area. FINANCES AND CHARITABLE STATUS Broughton s Parish Share of almost 90,000 is paid in full to the Diocese of Blackburn. e parish has raised almost 260,000 for appeals in the last decade. ere have been a couple of generous legacies recently. However, raising revenue is always a challenge as running costs for such a large and complex parish are high. e Parish Hall Complex is self-financing. e house on Northway is let. Gift Aid is applied for in a timely manner and contributed approximately 10,500 in e annual parish turnover is 154,000. Copies of the audited Annual Accounts for 2011 and accounts prepared for the APCM for 2012 are available. e Parish is a charity registered with the Charities Commission (Charity Number: ). PCC Members are Trustees. e activities, declared upon registration, are:. Regular public worship open to all. Provision of sacred spaces for prayer and contemplation. Pastoral work including the sick and bereaved. Teaching of Christianity through sermons, courses and small groups. Taking of religious assemblies in Schools. Development of a Youth Club with a Christian ethos. Promotion of Christianity through the staging of events and meetings, and the distribution of literature. Promoting the whole mission of the Church through provision of activities for senior citizens, parents and toddlers and other special need groups. Supporting other charities in the UK and Overseas. Stretching us spiritually and intellectually Guiding us in prayer and service Sustaining the quality and quantity of worship services within the parish Increasing the number of clergy in the parish, especially the reinstatement of a curate Exploring the area of youth ministry, possibly with a paid Youth Worker Establishing the post of paid Administrator to be located in the parish office Exploring the possibility of becoming an Eco-Church Converting the glebe field into a grave yard and car park Preventing local plans from having an adverse impact upon the church Encouraging stewardship Re-visiting the Mission Action Plan so that there are clear goals for the next five years. WHY BROUGHTON? Church of England parishes offer a range of opportunities and challenges. Unlike the caricatures of small and moribund congregations, Broughton is a large and growing parish. It is situated in an attractive and accessible location close to beautiful countryside and vibrant cities. ere are two outstanding Church of England primary schools within the parish. e choir has a national and international reputation. Broughton has a dedicated and active laity willing and able to assist the incumbent in offering Christian service in this place. We are enthusiastic about writing the next chapter in the history of the Parish of Broughton with the leadership of our new vicar. Building on a strong foundation we pray that together we can develop new ways of bringing Christian hope, the Good News of Jesus Christ, to thousands of people in the parish, the Diocese and beyond.
