Bethany Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Synod 151 Tremont St., Port Orchard WA SERVICE TIMES: Sundays 8;15 & 11am; Mondays 7pm; Sunday School for all ages 9:45am HOW HISTORY IS REWRITTEN TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY February 10, 2019

WELCOME TO WORSHIP Welcome and thank you for joining us for worship today! In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer Him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful Word and celebrate His life-giving Sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home with Him. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS ENCOURAGED To participate in this service, just follow along in this service folder. Lutheran worship is specifically designed to include the participation of the assembly. We are not here to be an audience, we are here to speak and sing the Word of God to each other. Parts marked P are spoken by the pastor, and parts marked C are spoken or sung ( ) by the congregation. A NOTE ON COMMUNION Bethany practices close communion. Close communion is the biblical practice of admitting to communion only members in good standing of our congregation and those who are completely united with the congregation in faith and understanding. Close communion protects those who do not understand the danger of communing without selfexamination or without recognizing the presence of the Lord s body and blood with the bread and wine, and preserves the intimate unity expressed by communing with one another. Therefore, we invite all members in good standing of an Evangelical Lutheran Synod or Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod congregation to join in Holy Communion with us, and we ask that all others please refrain and speak to one of our pastors for more information or if you are interested in joining our church. Thank you for respecting our teachings. Communicants, please remember to sign the communion register. A GUIDE TO OUR ORDER OF WORSHIP The traditional Divine Service contains elements which are Sacrificial (what we do for God) and elements which are Sacramental (what God is doing for us). Though the Sacrificial aspects are important, the Sacramental aspects are where the true focus should be. When Jesus visited the home of friends (Luke 10:38-42), Martha was distracted with serving Jesus a meal, while Mary sat listening to Him. Martha requested that Mary help her, and our Savior replied: Martha, Martha one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part. This is where Bethany s motto comes from and has application for our worship life: what Martha was doing for Christ (Sacrificial) was certainly appreciated by Him, but what Mary did by sitting at His feet (Sacramental) was a better part the one thing needful. THE LANGUAGE OF WORSHIP Four languages are represented in liturgical songs in our service. Hebrew shows our connection to the Old Testament believers; Greek shows our roots in the New Testament apostolic church; Latin shows that we are part of the Western heritage of the church, and English shows that our worship is also present day and relevant for our time. CHRIST IN OUR WORSHIP Note how the liturgy presents the life of Christ: His birth, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, etc. All Christian worship is centered in Him and performed through Him. 3 THE ORDER OF HOLY COMMUNION ELH Rite II, Responses I (please stand) PROCESSIONAL HYMN Beautiful Savior 657 THE INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit C: Amen. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heav n and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: I ask each of you, in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do. P: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in His name? C: I do. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. May He comfort your heart by His holy Absolution, and strengthen you by His Sacraments, that your joy may be full. Peace be with you! C: Amen. be seated The Baptismal Font was typically in the entryway of churches. Through this Sacrament God had us enter the Holy Christian Church. For that reason the Invocation opened the service as a reminder of Baptism, as we worship in the name of the Triune God who has graciously made us His own. The pastor makes the ( ) Sign of the Cross, likewise reminiscent of Baptism. We note that the sign of the cross opens and closes the service and marks the Sacramental aspects of the service where God comes to us in the Means of Grace during Absolution, the Creed (Baptism), Words of Institution and reception of the Supper. 3

THE INTROIT P: The lightnings lit up the world, the earth trembled and shook. Blessed are those who dwell in Your house. How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord. THE GLORIA PATRI C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. The Kyrie eleison is an ancient Greek song from the early church, again reflecting the Trinity. This is not a confession of sin, but a plea for God s help in all areas of life, similar to the prayer of the 10 lepers. THE KYRIE ELEISON C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO C: Glory be to God on high: And on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise You, we bless You, we worship You, we glorify You, we give thanks to You, for Your great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. You take away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For You only are holy. You only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. THE SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. THE COLLECT P: Let us pray: P: O merciful and everlasting God, heavenly Father: We thank You that You have revealed to us the glory of Your Son, and let the light of Your Gospel shine upon us: We pray that You would guide us by this light that we may walk diligently as Christians in all good works, ever be strengthened by Your grace, and conduct our lives in all godliness; through the same, Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. 4

THE WORD OF GOD THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 61:10-11 I will rejoice greatly in the Lord. My soul will celebrate because of my God, for He has clothed me in garments of salvation. With a robe of righteousness He covered me, like a bridegroom who wears a beautiful headdress like a priest, and like a bride who adorns herself with her jewelry. 11 For as the earth produces its growth, and as a garden causes what has been sown to sprout up, so God the Lord will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up in the presence of all the nations. THE EPISTLE LESSON 2 Peter 1:16-21 To be sure, we were not following cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the powerful appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received honor and glory from God the Father, when the voice came to Him from within the Majestic Glory, saying, This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. 18 We heard this Voice, which came out of heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 We also have the completely reliable prophetic word. You do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the Morning Star rises in your hearts, 20 since we know this above all else: No prophecy of Scripture comes about from someone s own interpretation. 21 In fact, no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were being carried along by the Holy Spirit. THE GRADUAL P: Alleluia! Oh praise the Lord, all you nations! Laud Him, all you peoples! For His merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Alleluia! C: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. please stand P: The Holy Gospel for Transfiguration Sunday is written in the 17 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the first verse. C: Glory be to You, O Lord. THE GOSPEL LESSON & SERMON TEXT Matthew 17:1-9 S ix days later Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James; and He led them up onto a high mountain by themselves. 2 There He was transfigured in front of them. His face was shining like the sun. His clothing became as white as the light. 3 Just then, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You want, I will make three shelters here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them. Just then, a Voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him. 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down and were terrified. 7 Jesus 5

approached and as He touched them, He said, Get up, and do not be afraid. 8 When they opened their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus alone. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, Do not tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. P: This is the Holy Gospel of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. C: Praise be to You, O Christ! THE NICENE CREED Credo is Latin for: I believe. The Nicene Creed came in 325 AD as an answer to false teachings which attempted to undermine the doctrine that Jesus is the true Son of God from C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen. be seated eternity. THE SERMON HYMN Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here 135 THE SERMON please stand HOW HISTORY IS REWRITTEN P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus unto everlasting life. Amen. THE OFFERTORY C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen. be seated 6

GOD S PEOPLE RESPOND OFFERING This is a moment in our worship when members and friends of Bethany Lutheran respond to God s good news with gifts to support His saving work. If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate. please stand THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. P: Heavenly Father, You admonish Your children to listen to Your Son. C: Give us ears to hear Him, as He speaks to us through His Holy Word and give us faith to believe that He delivers forgiveness, life and salvation to us through the same. P: You resist the proud and give grace to the humble. C: Grant us true humility after the likeness of Your Son, our Lord, that we may never be arrogant or prideful. P: In order to maintain peace and order in our world, You place authorities over us. C: Bless the leaders of the world and give them wisdom to govern according to Your will. P: Where there is strife and conflict, bring reconciliation and peace. Where there is persecution, bring freedom. C: And help us to be good citizens as we carry out our various vocations. P: Look down with mercy upon all those who are sick, hospitalized, homebound or suffering in any way [especially ]. Provide them with compassionate care and knowledgeable physicians. C: And send us to deliver Christ and His gifts to them, so that they would be comforted in their time of need. P: All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. THE SACRAMENT THE PREFACE/PROPER PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up unto the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. 7

Holy Communion ties us to the Church of all time, to those already in heaven, and also to the angels who are serving at the Feast of the Lamb. The Preface, The Proper Preface, and The Sanctus all reflect this. The Sanctus in particular praises the Trinity, reminiscent of the vision given to Isaiah. We now prepare for the special visitation of our God in the Body and Blood of Christ. The Exhortation was written to instruct us so that we do not receive Christ s Body and Blood to our judgment, as St. Paul warns. The Lord s Prayer has traditionally been included in the Communion order. Then follow The Words of Institution by which our Lord Jesus blesses the bread and wine through the mouth of the pastor. As St. Augustine said, When the Word is joined to the element it becomes a Sacrament.. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, for in the mystery of the Word made flesh You have given us a new revelation of Your glory, that, seeing You in the person of Your Son, we may be drawn to the love of those things which are not seen. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: THE SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY) C: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heav n and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, Blessed is He, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. THE EXHORTATION P: Dear friends in Christ! In order that you may receive this holy Sacrament worthily, it is good that you consider what you must now believe and do. From the words of Christ; This is My body, which is given for you; this is My blood which is shed for you for the remission of sins you should believe that Jesus Christ is Himself present with His body and blood, as the words declare. From Christ s words for the remission of sins you should believe that Jesus Christ bestows upon you His body and blood to confirm unto you the forgiveness of all your sins. And finally, you should do as Christ commands you when He says Take, eat; drink of it, all of you, and this do in remembrance of Me. If you believe these words of Christ, and do as He therein has commanded, then you have rightly examined yourselves and may worthily eat Christ s body and drink His blood for the forgiveness of all your sins. You should also unite in giving thanks to Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for so great a gift, and should love one another with a pure heart, and thus with the whole Christian Church have comfort and joy in Christ our Lord. To this end may God the Father grant you His grace; through the same, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil, C: For Thine is the kingdom and the pow r and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 8

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying; Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) C: O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, Have mercy upon us. O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, Have mercy upon us. O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, Grant us Your peace. Amen. be seated The Pax Domini was a custom in many churches: a kiss of peace was passed among the faithful to show their unity in this blessed Communion. Today we simply sing the response. The Agnus Dei quotes the words of John the Baptist regarding Jesus, Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. What the Passover Lamb once only pictured is now truly before us in the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Christ, given to the communicants in The Distribution. DISTRIBUTION (visitors, please note our communion practice on page 2) DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Jerusalem, Thou City Fair and High 619 How Lovely Shines the Morning Star 343 THE NUNC DIMITTIS C: Lord, now You let Your servant depart in peace according to Your word. For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, A Light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. 9

THE COLLECT OF THANKSGIVING P: O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. C: And His mercy endures forever. P: Let us pray: We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through these salutary gifts, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through them in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. The Collect of Thanksgiving was re-written by Dr. Luther in order to clean up the false teachings sometimes associated with the Sacrifice of the Mass. Note how we pray that this Sacrament would not only strengthen our faith but also our Christian love for each other. THE ANNOUNCEMENTS please stand THE SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. THE BENEDICAMUS P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
