2 Colossians 3:15-17 Colossians 3:15-17 (NRSV) 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. 2 reclaiming gladly wear wear the the name name

Welcome to this Assembly of Mennonite Church Canada, the assembly where we will keep before us the challenge of gladly wearing the name, of doing everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, as challenged by Colossians 3:17. What does it mean to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ? Set as this verse is, in a paragraph about clothing ourselves with Christ s values of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and love, we are invited to think about how we are called to wear this identity as our brand. When others see us, when they experience our values, they see our brand of Christianity. We hope and pray that God s healing and hope are flowing through us to the world, and that the way we are branded will include acts and attitudes of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and love. When these attributes describe our corporate and individual desires, we will claim again what Jesus and Paul proclaimed 2000 years ago. In the process, Jesus Christ will gladly reclaim us, his frail and imperfect disciples; he will call us, equip us and send us again to engage the world with the reconciling gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the hope that has motivated staff and volunteers to work gladly and diligently toward these days together as a gathered national church. May it be so. In addition to our coming together, this Assembly also offers you a prayer room to become quiet and ground yourself in God. We hope Ambrose s prayer room, on the north eastern side of the 2nd floor, with its stained glass windows and comfortable chairs, will help you settle into an awareness of God s nearness. Volunteers, coordinated by Kathy Dyck, will receive you, and pray with and for you, and for the work and mission of our church. Worship, Bible Studies, Discernment sessions, workshops, meals, refreshments, and boundless opportunities for fellowship await you. Opportunities to meet and encourage parts of the church that you are not yet familiar with call you to grow as God s people. The Mennonite Church Canada Day celebration invites you to celebrate and enjoy a party with this slice of God s big family. Friday night s farewell to Jack Suderman as our General Secretary will help us bless Jack and bring closure to this season in the life of Mennonite Church Canada. And, as our general board convenes on Saturday morning, many of us will enjoy the cultural and natural blessings of this part of God s earth as we participate in the tours that have been prepared for us. Elsie Rempel Director of Christian Nurture, and Interim Coordinator of Assembly Planning, Mennonite Church Canada ASSEMBLY 2010 Calgary, Alberta June 29-July

5 Thank You On behalf of Mennonite Church Canada, with all its 230 congregations, this note says thank you. Thank you for the hours of service, the creative ones as well as the ones spent on more mundane tasks; hours that made this major faith forming and church business event possible. Because of your work, the participants in this year s assembly have this opportunity to: Build up and nurture the church by worshiping, discerning, debating, learning together. Conduct the business of the organization of Mennonite Church Canada by reviewing the work and ministry, accepting or rejecting budgets and financial statements, appointing an auditor, electing its officers, members of councils and committees, and amending and monitoring adherence to its bylaws as needed. There are many more people who have played a significant role in preparing this assembly for you both staff and volunteers. Even though your name may not be listed here, we are grateful to you, too. And finally, it is a blessing for a national church to learn and discern, worship, sing, pray, and fellowship together. Thank you to each one who came. There are many national churches around the world that are not able meet together freely and comfortably in the way to which we have become accustomed. And finally, thank you to the faculty and staff of Ambrose College for hosting us. 6 Tips for a good experience Keep this book with you. It has schedules, maps, worship outlines, and other good things to guide you through your time at the Delegate Assembly. Our daily news sheet will also be available in ecologically friendly hard copy quantities (please share) and online to help you report back to your congregations ( If you re lost and confused or just looking for a friendly face visit the information desk in the registration area, or talk to a friendly volunteer in a green vest. If you re in need of first aid, a nurse will assist you. You can find the nurse at the marked table nearest the Discernment Hall exit. Care for our environment. Use reusable coffee mugs and water bottles if you have brought them with you. Ambrose is using compostable dishes and cutlery. Be judicious with your use of water. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Scent free policy: In recognition of individuals with asthma, allergies, and severe environmental and chemical sensitivities, we ask you to refrain from wearing fragrances and scented personal care products at the Delegate Assembly. This includes perfumes, colognes, aftershave, and scented hair products. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by those affected. Take this opportunity to get to know your sisters and brothers from other churches, learn the names of the people around you in the coffee break line-up, or make some new friends over lunch. We hope you leave with many new and renewed friendships! In case of an emergency, people can contact you here by calling during Assembly hours. SHUTTLE SERVICES Airport Shuttle Mennonite Church Alberta volunteers will provide a shuttle service from the Calgary Airport for $10 per person, each way. Please indicate your shuttle needs on the registration form. Mobility Service An on-site mobility service will not be offered this year. Ambrose is a small college and all events happen in close proximity to each other. On Thursday, July 1st, volunteers will arrange rides to Menno Simons Christian Elementary and Middle School for the Mennonite Church Canada Day Celebration for those with mobility needs. For able-bodied individuals, the 7-10 minute walk to Menno Simons Christian Elementary and Middle School for the Canada Day event will provide a welcome change from the hours of sitting we will do at Assembly. Daily Shuttle for guests staying at the Sandman Hotel or Motel Village. If requested, there will be a morning and evening shuttle service from the Sandman Hotel or Motel Village at the cost of $15 for the duration of the Assembly, including the Ministers Conference. Shuttle service is planned to ensure that guests arrive at Ambrose for the start of each day s activities and return to the hotel when the day s activities are over. PARKING Bicycle racks are located outside of Ambrose University College for those arriving by bicycle. Two pay-parking lots, each with space for 200 vehicles, are located directly behind the Ambrose Educational building. The ticket meters will be covered because fees have been integrated into larger contract costs. The second lot is reserved as an RV/Camping lot. INTERNET ACCESS Mennonite Church Canada has made an arrangement with Ambrose so that wireless internet access is available throughout the campus, including the residence, with no additional individual user fees. An educational component of reading and reporting will assist the internship participants in reflecting on the impact of their mission involvement and whether they are called to longer-term cross-cultural service through the church. 20 > Begin a conversation Radical Journey is a year-long experience that begins a conversation that will continue for the rest of your life. Through this conversation, you will develop spiritually and personally by integrating faith into your life through experiential cross-cultural learning and service. You will develop leadership abilities within a supportive community, exploring faith and life from an Anabaptist perspective. { } > From the city The conversation will begin in an urban setting like Chicago. For a month, as you discern and live out your faith, you will live in an intentional community that practices hospitality and strives to offer and receive God s love. > To around the world From there, the conversation will continue in one of several international service assignments for 11 months. Mentors will walk alongside you as you witness God at work in the world and imagine ways you can become an example of God s love to others. >>> > Coming home After a brief reentry period, you will integrate what you have learned into your home community, and help to encourage and challenge others in their faith journey. You will continue to imagine ways to become a part of what God is doing in the world. Assignment possible locations; South Africa, China, England, Bolivia and Argentina. Radical Journey is not program oriented, but is interested in developing vital communities of faith and service. Radical Journey focuses on spiritual practices, including prayer, theological reflection, generosity, storytelling, shaping and transforming communities, hospitality and leadership. We are pilgrims together on a radical journey.
