3 1 Section 1- Community Profile Waverley Church is located in the southwest corner of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, has a population of some 700,000 residents of diverse national and cultural backgrounds. Waverley Church is located in an area referred to as Richmond West (population under 10,000 residents as of the 2006 census), which is the area south of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and east of Waverley Street. Historically, residential development has been only to the northeast, east and southeast of Waverley Street, however significant development of the Waverley West community in recent years, and in the years to come, will see some 30,000+ residents within a short distance to our immediate northwest, west and southwest. We believe that we are strategically placed at our present site with this large development being built around us, particularly due to the reality that there are no lots set aside for churches within the Waverley West development. Both Richmond West and Waverley West represent much cultural diversity, partially the result of our close proximity to the University of Manitoba, just 2.5 KM to the east. Waverley West had not yet been developed as of the 2006 census, but the census results for Richmond West report the following. One is in cooperation with International Student ministries to reach U of M students and families. The second is to befriend people in our community and share the warmth of Jesus. Bible Distribution Team Door to door New Testament distribution in our immediate community With an ever growing and changing community enveloping our church site, we see tremendous opportunity and feel tremendous burden to represent the Light of the World in the southwest corner of Winnipeg, and beyond.

5 3 Section 2 - Church Profile A - Church History Waverley Church was established in 1977 as a daughter work of Winnipeg s Portage Avenue Baptist Church. The church began with approximately 25 individuals meeting initially in the home of the assistant pastor, and later in a local school. The work, known as Richmond West Baptist Church, grew to an attendance of over 100 in four years. In October 1981, the property on Portage Avenue was sold, and the two congregations joined together and began to meet at the University of Manitoba. While some families ultimately moved on to other churches due to the longer commute to the South end of the City, the remaining congregation decided that it was time to complete a new church building using the proceeds of the sale of the property on Portage Avenue. On September 23, 1984, a new church building, known as Waverley Fellowship Baptist Church was completed on six acres of land at the corner of Waverley Street and Cadboro Ave. This constituted the combined congregations of Portage Avenue Baptist Church and Richmond West Baptist Church. In 2002, the church embarked on a significant expansion of the existing facilities, at which time we increased the size of the building from 11,000 sq. ft. to 19,000 sq. ft. and increased the size of the auditorium to seat over 400 people. The expansion was completed in 2004.

Two of the existing board members will complete their terms in June of 2015 and a nominating committee is in place to seek new board candidates for election in June. Waverley s current board chair is Craig Milligan.

9 7 Section 3 - Lead Pastor Position A - Survey Results In January 2015, the search committee conducted a two-part survey to determine the congregation s perceptions of Waverley s current strengths and areas of need. The congregation identified current strengths as worship format and content, welcoming environment, children s ministry format and Biblically-based preaching. The congregation identified current areas of need as ease of transitioning into small group participation, additional staff or volunteers for children s ministry, increased awareness of and desire to extend compassion to the poor, and increased participation in corporate, small group and personal prayer. B - Preferred Attributes A second survey was conducted by the search committee which asked the congregation to identify what they perceived to be the preferred attributes of an incoming lead pastor. The overwhelming response was a priority of an individual with a primary gifting as a Pastor- Teacher one who communicates all themes of God s Word and reveals the person of Jesus Christ with clear, relevant preaching and teaching (Ephesians 4:11, 2 Timothy 4:2, Acts 20:20). Other areas of desired giftedness identified include evangelism (2 Timothy 4:5), shepherding and pastoral care (1 Peter 5:2), ability to relate to people of all ages (Luke 2:52), visionary leadership (Matthew 4:19) and spiritual oversight (Acts 20:17, 28).

10 8 C - Tasks & Responsibilities Key Focus: The Senior Pastor provides visionary leadership and spiritual oversight to the members and adherents of Waverley Church (WC) in the accomplishment of the Church s stated ends (Ends Statements) while maintaining compliance with the leader limitations policies. The faithful exposition of God s Word is central to this focus. Ends Statements: Waverley s Ends Statements have been developed in accordance with, and are subject to, the following Biblical passages: Matthew 28:19, 20a (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (The Great Commission) Mark 12:30, 31a (NIV) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. (The Great Commandment) The core statements above are meant to reflect God s calling on all believers, and the Ends Statements below are what we believe to be our distinctive calling within the global Christian community. 1. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, congregants will engage in intentional and expectant corporate, small group, and personal prayer. 2. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, individuals and families within our immediate community and spheres of influence will become believers. 3. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, the people of South Winnipeg will experience the love of God in practical and tangible ways. 4. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, families will develop healthier, Christcentred marriages and parenting practices. 5. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, congregants will become progressively mature, multiplying disciples. 6. Because of God s work through Waverley Church congregants will be informed of and inspired to be actively involved in local and international missions that have both a practical and spiritual focus. 7. Because of God s work through Waverley Church, leaders are selected and developed to take key positions in our church, community, workplaces & families.

11 9 Example Responsibilities and Tasks: Under policy governance the lead pastor is responsible for selecting and undertaking tasks that accomplish the ends and the church leadership does not take a prescriptive approach to a task and responsibility list. However, based on a recent church survey and analysis of results by the search committee, the following representative task breakdown and focus is a useful reference point for outlining responsibilities and tasks that we expect require the most focus. 1. Biblical Preaching and Spiritual Oversight (approximately 50%) 1.1. Preach the Word of God faithfully and regularly, and ensure equal diligence is given by others called upon to preach (expository preaching) Ensure the proper administration of the ordinance of Believer s Baptism and the Lord s Supper (Communion) Pray faithfully for the leading of God in the direction of the church Inspire the church family to grow deeper in relationship with Jesus Christ through service, prayer and the preaching / teaching of the Scriptures Give spiritual oversight by ensuring all church matters are conducted in a manner consistent with Biblical teaching Encourage equipping and training initiatives to develop lay leadership Safeguard the church from theological or doctrinal error by seeking the Holy Spirit for discernment rooted in God s Word Conduct pastoral care, visitation and crisis counselling in cooperation with other pastoral staff and deacons Officiate at weddings, funerals, baptisms and baby dedications in partnership with other pastoral staff 2. Visionary Leadership (approximately 30%) Work as a team with the Board of Directors in establishing the core values, vision, and long term ministry goals of the church Initiate and coordinate the planning process for vision and long term ministry goals among staff and ministry leaders Ensure that all church matters are conducted in a manner that is consistent with the church s core values, vision, purpose and ministry goals Maintain healthy relationships with other persons, groups and organizations with whom we partner in some capacity.

12 Lead the church in meaningful ministry to/ for the community, as well as global mission partnerships Participate at the Association, Regional and Conference levels of the denomination with which we are affiliated. 3. Administration and other Pastoral Responsibilities (approximately 20%) Lead regular staff meetings Oversee the administration of church ministries and program Provide oversight and direction to all pastoral and support staff (including performance evaluation and development plans) Function as Ex-officio member of all Church boards and committees, as required. D - Salary & Benefits Specific salary and benefit parameters will be discussed with the successful candidate during the latter stages of the candidating process. Candidates are encouraged to review the Manitoba Baptist Association Recommended Salary Guidelines and Group Benefits Information for 2015 which will serve as a general guideline in salary determination. E - Beliefs & Practices A candidate s agreement with the NAB Statement of Beliefs, Marriage Policy and Pastor Ethics Statement will be a requirement for employment.
