1 THANKS GIVING 24-7 PRAYER Dear friends and partners in prayer, We are delighted to greet you each as we share in the privilege of praying together through the Diary in this territory. We look forward with great anticipation to the outworking of our prayer life together. The Diary allows us to focus our thinking on particular prayer subjects as a united group of God s people in His Army. The continuing theme of our Diary is thanksgiving. There is so much to be thankful for, both in our personal lives and in our corporate life together. Indeed, we come before God with thanksgiving for His abundant blessings and provision for our territory over almost 100 years. And now we look forward, with eager anticipation, to His continued provision and blessings as we journey together to become one Australia territory. Paul s words to the Philippian church are very illuminating, Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, (Philippians 4:6 7). We are to trust God in every situation and to gird our prayers with thanksgiving, and the peace of God will guard our hearts and our minds. What a powerful encouragement for us each as we continue to trust God for both the present and the future! We commend the Diary to you, and encourage you to pray with thanksgiving to God in every situation, and for every subject outlined in the Diary. God bless you each as we embrace the privilege of praying together to see His will accomplished for His world and His Army in these days. Graeme and Karyn Rigley (Colonels) Chief Secretary-in-charge & Territorial Secretary for Women s Ministries Australia Southern Territory

2 When praying for corps Pray for the officers, local officers, soldiers, adherents and friends; the programs; and community outreach. We want our corps to be relevant to the communities they serve, to meet the needs of their congregations, to help transform the communities they are serving and to bring about revival in their part of the Kingdom of God. When praying for social centres Pray for the managers, chaplains, staff and clients/residents. Change happens rapidly and often in these days, particularly in regard to government legislation, so we need to remember our friends as they negotiate these changes for themselves and for others. Many of those who use our centres are vulnerable and feel like their whole world is falling apart, and they may find it hard to trust others. Their needs are complex and often take time to resolve. So, as you bring these places and people before God, try to imagine what it would be like for you, then bring these feelings and longings before God. When praying for departments Pray for the head of department, staff, and officers, and that their business operations and ministry will be effective for the Kingdom. When praying for Salvationists serving in other territories Pray that they will know God s love, peace and protection as He leads them in their ministry. When praying for other territories and regions Pray for those who live in other parts of our Army world a world that is often impoverished and where persecution and oppression is part of daily life. Pray that their needs may be met and God will be their sufficiency at all times. Please Note: Unless otherwise noted, taken from the Holy Bible, The New Living Translation of the Bible. We continue our theme of Thanksgiving for the second half of the year. I was recently invited to a Maximising Resilience course along with others from THQ and although it was based on secular, corporate, psychological research, I was pleased at the degree that it paralleled faith foundations. Included in the section on resilience building activities was a suggestion to focus on three blessings that you have experienced this week. Immediately the old song came to my mind, Count your Blessings. Remember the words? When upon life s billows you are tempest-tossed. When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost. Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Refrain: Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done! Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God has done. Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, and you will keep singing as the days go by. When you look at others with their lands and gold, think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold. Count your many blessings money cannot buy, your reward in heaven, nor your home on high. So, amid the conflict whether great or small, do not be discouraged, God is over all. Count your many blessings, angels will attend, help and comfort give you to your journey s end. (Johnson Oatman, Jr., pub.1897) Concentrating on the many things we have to be grateful for, and living a life of thanksgiving, not only gives God the glory and reminds us how much God cares for us, but also has a physical effect on our health and our ability to cope with life. Every blessing June Knop (Captain) Territorial Spiritual Life Development Secretary Evangelism & 24/7 2 3

3 JULY THANKSGIVING 24-7 PRAYER NOTES There are a number of special days and weeks in July observed by Australians that may help us focus our prayers this month: 2-9 July is NAIDOC Week, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to this country and to society. Throughout Australia the living, health and educational standards for Indigenous people are at odds with other Australians. Here lies an area of attention and need. The Salvation Army launches its Be a Souperhero campaign on 29 July and it runs until 4 August. Souperheros raise funds that assist people in crisis, facing hardship and disadvantage. Why not change the world one bowl of soup at a time and one prayer at a time! 29 July is White Ribbon Night when communities across Australia unite in support of bringing an end to violence against women. What are the needs across Australia? We can pray for the changes necessary to change the lives of all in need. 4 5

9 AUGUST THANKSGIVING 24-7 PRAYER NOTES Sometimes we can take the simplest things for granted, such as our homes and families. But they are such an integral factor in every aspect of our wellbeing. This month Australia observes Homelessness Prevention Week (1 7), National Missing Persons Week (6 12, date to be confirmed) and International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition (23). Imagine being one of the over 105,000 Australians who are homeless on any given night or one of the estimated 35,000 people who are reported missing each year, (approximately 20,000 are under the age of 18). Imagine being separated from friends and family, unable to communicate or return home, your passport taken from you, powerless to change this unexpected turn of events perhaps the domestic service job you applied for overseas is actually a position in the sex industry? There are an estimated 20.9 Million people trapped in some form of slavery today. It s sometimes called Modern-Day Slavery or Human Trafficking. Take time to thank the Lord for your family, your home, your security, your free choice, and then turn your prayerful attention to these desperate souls

14 SEPTEMBER NOTES Across Australia this month, many will celebrate Social September (1 30). Social September encourages us all to press pause and disconnect from our digital lives and reconnect with each other and with ourselves. The aim is to create spaces for face-toface social connection, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. Facebook, texting and even phone conversations are simply no substitute for personal interaction. It s the same with our time with the Lord. Time in conversation with the Lord, isn t just bringing an endless stream of requests to him, but rather spending quality time, getting to know him. Why not set some time aside regularly, if you don t already do so, to chat with the Lord, or go on outings together, walks along the beach, drives in the countryside and spend time just being together? 26 27

We have had some members of the community receive the Lord Jesus and surrender themselves to the teaching of. They continue to fall in love with the God of truth and enjoy walking in his Spirit. Our Doorways program continues to be a very effective platform for evangelism. We have seen several people begin attending Sunday worship and some responding to the Holy Spirit at the Mercy Seat. For ethnic diversity in the corps. For acceptance of biblical teaching about purity and holiness of living. That our corps will always stand firmly upon the truth of God s word and permit his Spirit to lead us. That 150 new souls will be won through the ministries and individuals of our corps. Please pray that we will be bold and courageous in our profession of the crucified and risen Christ. That people in our corps will come into an even greater dependence on Jesus and that they will push past any superficial faith and enter into the depths of God. 32 Baldivis Church & Community Centre (Western Australia) Lieutenants Amy and Ronald Stobie Continued development of community connections and relationships. 19 OCTOBER NOTES September 29 1 Oct Thought Matters Conference New Zealand Anti-Poverty Week (15 21) aims to strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia. And to encourage research, discussion and action by individuals, communities, organisations and government to address these problems. The United Nations particularly, focuses on the needs of destitute countries and the need for the world to work together to address the needs of developing nations. Although the issues are complex, each of us may have a basic understanding and of, and an opinion about, material poverty. But what of emotional bankruptcy, compassion fatigue and spiritual poverty? We need to be aware that poverty exists in all forms, and that to be a completely whole person we need to address all areas of our being. Jesus speaks to us in Matthew 5:3, saying Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Spiritual poverty is the understanding that because of our sin we were completely destitute and could do nothing to deliver ourselves from that situation. We recognise that it was Jesus sacrifice on the cross that gave us salvation and life. Being poor in spirit means that we understand and are thankful for what Jesus achieved for us and that we have complete need of him. It is essential that we thank the Lord for his provision, and intercede on behalf others for their needs, both material and spiritual
