This applies to the community leader, the province coordinator and the international coordinator. Therefore, I have a team of eleven people with me, the vice-international coordinators. They have two missions, that of managing, with me, the priorities given by the Lourdes General Assembly last year (for those which involve the mission of giving life) and that of guiding the provinces: helping them, nurturing them, strengthening them and advising them in order to help them be of better service to the communities in their provinces. During this quarter, there has been a lot of activities in the provinces as you will see in the pages of this newsletter and the vice-international coordinators have, as usual, been close to the provinces, not counting their time and not withstanding their tiredness. Tim and Maria-Cecilia have been involved in four province assemblies from Lima to Montreal, including Mexico and Toronto (plus three others in June in Brazil)! Darius has been involved with a "Between the Seas" province meeting in Bratislava and he has helped this large province (60 communities) to request the creation of a province in Ukraine. These two provinces will hold their assemblies in Joanna has been involved in two provincial assemblies of the provinces in Poland within a week of each other. Yves-Bertin has been involved in the provincial assembly of the East Africa province in Bujumbura. Elaine has been involved in the meeting of the Southern Cross province council in Sydney and has greatly helped Mabel and Valerie after their difficult visit to Bangladesh, which has disappeared (temporarily, I hope) from the Faith and Light map. Mirna went twice, in two weeks, from Syria to Egypt to attend the assemblies of the Egypt South (with Kuwait) and Egypt North (with the Sudan) provinces. Marie-Rose, Lucia, Hervé and Anne have not been idle, but during this time, there was not a large province meeting except in the Danube province where a meeting was held in Serbia and where our international chaplain, Father Guy, represented Hervé and Anne. You can see how much accompanying the provinces is a task that necessitates a great closeness with their coordinators; the need to communicate so often with everyone takes a lot of time, effort and energy and that cannot be done by one person alone. I am overjoyed when I see how each viceinternational coordinator is taking his/her role to heart; those I have been able to see so far have filled me with admiration. They fulfil their role of accompaniment with a lot of warmth, joy and enthusiasm. This is very good for the Faith and Light communities that become more mature and more alive through these events! 2 Page 2 Reports Brazil North East Renascer The Assembly took place from 19 to 21 June at Aracaju in the North East of Brazil. There were approximately 50 participants. Some people had taken a 27- hour bus journey to be there! The meeting was joyful, with a lot of singing and dancing. The delegates were mostly community leaders and team members (interim coordination team and nomination committee) due to the travel and accommodation costs, but there were still disabled people, parents and friends. On Saturday and Sunday, we took part in the parish mass just opposite the venue. On the programme, a reflection on the words of the Popes to the Faith and Light communities (Paul VI and John Paul II) by Father Raymundo (former province chaplain), a presentation on the new structures by Auxiliadora Santa Rita (former province coordinator) and a presentation on the identity and mission by ourselves. We worked in small groups on the province priorities and the choice of name: Renascer. Then, it was time for the discernment and election of the province coordinator. The interim province team and the province coordinator chose the vice-coordinators. The new team formed a nomination committee and nominated a treasurer. We closed with a very lively and large celebration with traditional dancing and a meal. Tim and Maria-Cecilia Buckley vice-international Coordinators Marilene Barros Oliveira Dantas is married. She is a social worker. Marilene is a member of Faith and Light as a 'sister' for 18 years. Bem-vinda Marilene! Lebanon South and Jordan On 21 June, Lebanon South and Jordan met. Thirty-four communities met at Notre Dame du Puits in Bkennaya in order to elect their first province coordinator. Mirna Hayek, international vice coordinator and the nomination team, which had worked for six months to prepare for this day, led the elections. It was a real time of sharing and challenge. A time of renewal and discernment to say yes to the mission and to the new project of God. The community delegations arrived at 9 o clock in the morning, with a remarkable parental involvement. The day started with a time of reflection on the priorities of the province. Woaaaaaaaaaaaaw... two hours later, a long list of priorities was unfurled. In the afternoon, the election process began. The International Solidarity delegates elected me and I said Yes to casting the net! Rita Aouad Provincial Coordinator Rita Aouad Rita has been teaching the catechism for over 10 years. She has been a member of the Saint Joseph community in Beirut since Rita was community leader, then national vice coordinator Mabrouk (Congratulations) Rita! 3 Reports Page 3 Jesus, Luz de los Andes Despite the great geographical difficulties of the province, which is made up of Chile, Ecuador, Columbia and Peru, about 70 of us, 14 of whom were disabled, and 2 chaplains from Chile and Peru met in Lima from 3 to 5 July. Each one of us wanted to train and learn. We had a training session on the new structures and on the identity and mission, a time of reflection on the priorities of the province and we chose a name for our province: Jésus, Luz de los Andes. In an atmosphere of prayer and peace, Alfieri Quiroz Crovetto was elected as province coordinator. He then formed his provincial team, which will meet next 15 to 17 October in Lima. I would particularly like to thank Tim and Maria-Cécilia Buckley (Vice-International coordinators) and Claude and Denise Gravel (members of the Board of Directors) for their presence and their teaching that led us to discover that we belong to a large international family. A heartfelt thank you for the international solidarity, which allowed us to buy plane tickets for the delegates from Chile, Colombia and Ecuador and to face the transport costs in Lima! Be blessed, you have all made it possible for this meeting to take place! Mariana Mujica de Zimmermann Former province coordinator Alfieri Quiroz Crovetto is a friend of Faith and Light and is a retailer. In 2005, Alfieri started the community in Lima. Before becoming aware of Faith and Light, he was involved with street children and AIDS sufferers. Beautiful new journey, Alfieri! mini training session was put together with a few basic lessons, a washing of the feet ceremony and the viewing of Marie-Hélène s DVD Everyone was very attentive and keen to learn, asking a lot of questions. This visit will remain at the forefront of my memories; the African communities live Faith and Light in a quite particular way, joy very often prevails, even in very difficult situations Eastern Africa Bujumbura, Burundi I was welcomed at the airport, very late at night, by Father Guillaume, after a long journey. We went to Kiriri passing along the banks of the lake where Guillaume was hoping to show me some hippopotamuses, but they weren t there. From the 7 to 10 August, about forty people came from Burundi, Rwanda, Kivu and Kenya. Unfortunately, no one came from Nairobi, Uganda and Tanzania The time was well spent between work meetings, breaks and spiritual times. The work meetings included: - the definition of the priorities for the province and numerous projects were identified: training, holiday camps, Announcing and Sharing Days, pilgrimages and the creation of new communities. - training sessions on the new structures, - discernment and election time which led to the election of Daphrose Nikwigize (former national coordinator for Burundi) as coordinator of the Eastern Africa province, the new name for Africa Great Lakes, and of Léoncie Mukamwezi from Kigali, Godeberthe Mukagasana from Kigali and Roger Mirindi from Bukavu as province vice-coordinators. This team should be completed by a person from Kenya to accompany the Nairobi communities and follow the development of Faith and Light in Nyahururu. Father Guillaume has accepted to be the provincial chaplain. Break times were numerous, joyful and full of life as always in Africa! The spiritual time was also valued, daily masses in the spiritual centre as well as at the local parish at 6.30am (full church). The presence of persons with learning disabilities like Adelin, Cosette, Léa and Jean-Claude was, as usual, the driving force behind the spirit of Faith and Light; they took the place which was theirs, including during discernment, with gentleness and wisdom. After the Assembly, as about twenty people were available and prepared to spend an extra day, a The return journey went very well: leaving at 1.20 am, stopover in Kigali then Nairobi. A second flight to Amsterdam (arrived at 4pm after an 8 hour flight), then a third plane between Amsterdam and Paris. GdC Daphrose Nikwigize is the mum of Sandra who has Downe Syndrome. In the country, she is called Mamma Sandra. Daphrose was the coordinator for Burundi. She is a nurse by profession. Welcome Mamma Sandra!

Page 4 Reports Central America and the Caribbean Corazones abiertos From the 7 to 9 August, we took part in a very beautiful Assembly in Mexico. There were 11 representatives from the Dominican Republic, 7 from Honduras and 18 from Mexico. Elsa Gonzales was elected as province coordinator. A new name was chosen for the province; Corazones abiertos (Open Hearts). Three vice-coordinators were nominated for Mexico, 2 for the Dominican Republic and 2 for Honduras. We had 2 days of training on community life and disabled people and a half-day pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica. We also talked about the Identity and Mission process and the celebrations. The priorities of the province have been well defined: training, communication within the province, outside communication and finance. Our great joy has been to see so many young people involved as community leaders! T and M-C B Elsa Gonzales is a "friend" in Faith and Light since She has four children. With Victor, her husband, she was coordinator for Mexico and then for Central America and Caribbean zone. Victor joined the Lord in January Elsa, we wish you a beautiful new journey!! Céline Lagacé lives in Calgary. She is a friend to Faith and Light since Céline practices as a tax analyst. She is responsible for the community "Living Water". Thank you Céline! Canada West Called to be friends The Canada West provincial Assembly, from 28 to 31 August, was relatively small (about 30 participants) and peaceful. Its preparation was marked by poverty, frailty, joy and ease of adaptation. Ron Rogala, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, is a lot better and could take part in the meeting. The wife of one of the members of the nomination committee had an operation. A member of the interim province team also fell ill and was unable to carry out their duties. The nomination committee was unable to meet but they did a very good job on the discernment by telephone and fax. The theme of friendship spanned the whole weekend. Friday evening, the welcome and presentation of the weekend. The following morning, a lesson from Tim Dobbin on friendship, followed by sharing groups and the washing of the feet. In the afternoon, we presented the new structures and answered questions on the way in which it affected the province and the process of discernment and electing leaders. communication and pilgrimages in On Sunday morning, the Assembly elected Céline Lagacé as province coordinator and nominated Raymond and Thérèse Pinel, from Powell River, and Carole Coulombe, from Ottawa, as province vice-coordinators. Two other vice coordinators will be nominated later. After the Catholic Eucharist on Sunday, a training session and a celebration closed this meeting. T and M-C B Louise Sauriol-Major agreed to come and guide the disabled people. She has been a real treasure. The Assembly defined its priorities for the next four years: guiding the communities, training, finances, To contribute to Up sails!, send us reports on assemblies, meetings, training sessions, photos Send us news of the communities you guide, fioretti

Reports Page 5 Saint Augustine Festival, Beirut "Love and do what you like " (Saint Augustine) It is in this spirit that the Faith and Light communities in Lebanon held their second festival, organised in partnership with and on the property of the Saint Augustine seminary in Beit Meri from 26 to 30 August The aim of the festival was, primarily, to prove that the disabled persons have their place within the Church and in society and to reveal their gifts. Thanks to this festival, Faith and Light was able to bear witness to and weave the bonds of friendship with various people from the preparation phase. Most important was to carry the testimony not only to the visitors but also to the seminary students who are the priests of tomorrow. The festival has also got a money-making goal: it allows the financing of the summer camps for the 65 Faith and Light communities in Lebanon as well as the movement expenses for the year to come. Held at the time of the St Augustine Feast day on 28 August, the festival was a meeting place for the whole family. There was a painting and craft exhibition as well as activities for young people, and games for the little ones. Space was also reserved for ecclesiastical movements and various associations. On the programme: a recital, an opening mass celebrated by the Bishop of Beirut, patron of the festival, a play was performed, an evening in honour of a well-known Lebanese singer who wanted to celebrate with the little ones and for a touch of youthfulness, a karaoke evening. On Sunday, the last day, all the village of Beit Meri was invited to dine chez nous. During the whole festival, Faith and Light opened its restaurants. Hundreds of members of the Lebanese communities took turns to serve, prepare sandwiches and Manakish (Lebanese style thyme pizza) and man the tills. Only one condition for doing it, love. Thousands of Faith and Light members from the country rallied for the festival. Preparations began in February Friends, parents, brothers and sisters sold raffle tickets, found prizes, ran adverts in friendly newspapers, prepared brochures and posters, distributed them and sent the invitations Several contacts were made with television and radio stations, who welcomed the witnesses of Faith and Light. A job that only specialised agencies or volunteers who loved and made love their motto, could have carried out. It is true that our brothers have special needs but they also have special gifts. This was the real testimony of Faith and Light! Hoda Elturk Former Lebanon South coordinator Sahar Refat lives in Minya in Egypt. She is a friend to Faith and Light for 15 years. She was regional coordinator. Sahar is a practicing teacher. Sukran (Thank you), Sahar for your enthusiasm! Egypt South and Kuwait The Assembly was held on 13 September at Minia in Egypt. Sahar Rafaat is the new province coordinator. 40 delegates were present but it was sad to note that 20 communities were not able to be represented. Despite this, the parents, friends and disabled people were there. Fadi Gopal and Father Angiliose from Kuwait were present. However, Fadi had to leave us a little early due to his newborn. The province team is made up of 9 vicecoordinators from various regions of Egypt and Fadi from Kuwait. It is a balanced team made up of people with a lot of experience and young people who bring in new blood. Sahar is very enthusiastic and has a great desire to put all her efforts into practicing her leadership! She was able to meet all the participants and speak to them And one final joy: l Arche of Minia joined us for the closing celebration. Thank you to everyone. Mirna Hayek Vice-International coordinator

Page 6 Report A session in Sudan This summer, we experienced a camp from 20 to 25 April with 61 disabled people, their friends and their parents on the edge of the desert in the refugee region at Hajj Youssef- Gereif. The theme: Jesus is alive! Alleluia! given that is was Easter and our mission of being witnesses to the resurrection. In the guidebook that was prepared (names, programme, songs and the theme of each day), I wrote: As the women and Apostles were going to change their pain into joy and their fear into courage, in order to go on a mission in this world of sadness, after their meeting with the risen Jesus, so we, members of Faith and Light, we are called in the Sudan and with the suffering in Darfur, to bear witness by our life that good is stronger than evil, love is stronger than hate and life is stronger than death. Through the resurrection of Jesus, we are all called to be peacemakers and bearers of hope. The first day: visit of the women to the tomb (Mt.28,1-10.) In the morning, reading and explanation of the text with the aid of a poster. Then we stepped forward to place incense in the tomb, with the women, and to say a prayer. It was a very moving moment when the mums came with their child to offer him/her to the risen Lord. At midday, mass with the mime of the risen Jesus: the angel comes down; the guards drop dead; the women arrive at the tomb; they receive the Good News, see the spot and depart joyfully; meeting with Jesus himself and being sent on a new mission. That day was very hot (more than 45 degrees!). There was craft, songs, games, sharing groups and of course the evening entertainment, prepared in small groups. On the second day, Jesus appeared to the Apostles in the upper chamber and eight days later to Thomas (Jn 20,19-28). He made them go from fear to peace, from wounds to life and from withdrawal to mission. As always, there was the explanation of the text in the morning. Then, everyone came to place an olive branch on the altar, sent to be a peacemaker with the apostles. The Eucharist at midday with a mime: the apostles sat in fear, doors and windows locked, Mary was with them. Jesus appeared. He made them touch his wounds; breathed on them; opened the locked doors and sent them on a mission. The reaction of Thomas, incredulous. 2 nd appearance of Jesus; going from disbelief to worship. On the third day, we set off with the disciples to Emmaus (Lk 24,13-35). Jesus opens their eyes, their hearts are burning and their steps light. Each person came and lit a candle whilst saying a request prayer. Emmanuel a young man of 18 years old, who does not speak approached to make his mute request with a big smile and gestures of happiness. Very moving. At mass, another mime: the disciples walk heads down, eyes closed, and faces sad. Jesus joins them; he makes them talk, he explains to them, blesses them and breaks bread with them and disappears. They set out again during the night despite their fatigue, to share their joy with their brothers. At the mass, there was a genuine bread such as that used by our Asian brothers. That evening, we had a visit from the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr. Léo Boccardi, like an apparition of the risen Jesus to his Apostles. He got close to everyone, touching like Jesus! On the fourth day, we were with the disciples on the banks of the lake (Jn 21,1-19). The risen Jesus appeared to them after a night without catching any fish. After the explanation of the Mime: disciples of Emmaüs text, when Jesus said: Simon, do you love me?, love hearts were stuck on a board forming a prayer. At mass, a final mime: the apostles are disappointed; on the word of Jesus they throw the net back in; joy of fishing; fish for breakfast; triple question of Jesus to Peter; transmission of power. On the final day, we went to put the paralysed man back on his feet at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple (Act 3,1-10 ) in the name of the risen Jesus; then we set out with him to walk on water, without fear, hand in hand with Jesus (Mt.14,22-33) who said: trust, do not fear! It is I! The climax was the baptism of eight brothers and sisters in the presence of the parish priest. Immense joy of everyone. Even if the situation was primitive (we slept on the floor, in a torrid heat), the experience for all of us was that of the resurrection, of a joy stronger than any suffering. We left with a more keen conscience that one could and must be, whatever our disability, witnesses to the resurrection, bearers of hope and peacemakers. Father Hans Putman, sj Chaplain of Faith and Light, Sudan

Readers letters Page 7 Thank you for the solidarity! I would like to thank you for the aid that we received from the international solidarity for the Mexico meeting. It was very beneficial to the country. We learnt a lot and shared in depth about the reality of Faith and Light. We left full of enthusiasm and vitality! Thank you to everyone. Consuelo Leonor, Dominican Republic The peace of Jesus be with you! Thank you to everyone who brought their financial aid so that our first province Assembly of North of Brazil could take place. May God bless you. With all our gratitude! Marilene Dantas Province coordinator On behalf of all the delegates who could attend the meeting of Northern Poland in September, I would like to thank for the financial support of 700 we received from you. It helped us to very well prepare this meeting and it has allowed members of our communities to participate in the meeting. We feel really members of the international family of Faith and Light. Maryla M ska Province Pologne Nord (Report next issue) Guidelines The new guidelines are truly superb! I love the cover and I think Father Réginald s drawings are very good. They are beautiful, evocative and apt... In short, very good. I am sure they will be popular in the communities. Father Guy Vanhoomissen What marvellous guidelines! We are using them and really loving them. May God bless you and Faith and Light.. Virge Nemvalts, Estonia I have received my order but I am already out of stock of the annex booklets for communities with small children. Could you send me 20 as soon as possible? I would also like 10 copies of the leaders handbook and if there is room in the envelope, do not hesitate to add any leaflets and posters. Anne Cronier, France West In extremis! I am very grateful for the rapid dispatch of the guidelines. Our coordination meeting begins in one hour!! A big thank you from your Scottish friends.. Ann McItyre Dear friends, I ask you to accept this cheque for 340 received in donations for Faith and Light during my husband s funeral. For many years he was at my side to share the joy and friendship during our Arc en Ciel community meetings. With all my friendship. G.W, France News from Benin The official launch and beginning of our community is planned for Christmas. This date was chosen so that the event catches the attention of all God s people. They will be invited to the parish of St Jean de Cotonou where we are going to celebrate the birth of Jesus and our birth into Faith and Light together with the congregation. The Charter and Constitution have been given to each member. The guidelines are also a tool that we are going to adapt to our world. I am confident that all will go well! Our next meeting with the Priest is planned for 13 October. Continue to pray and request prayers for us. In the union of prayer. Sister Marie-Antoinette, Benin Family Album, joy: Babies, babies... Welcome baby Botond, to the home of Csaba Mezsaros (Danube province) and Enik. He is just discovering his three brother: Izsó, Benedek and Sámuel and there are smiles all round! Lots of kisses for Marie- Abigaëlle (which means source of joy, what a beautiful name!), daughter to Etienne and Stéphanie Desmaisons (former leaders of the France West province). Here, with her big sister Servane. Big cuddles for Joseph who was born to Marie Merle (Marie made us sing at Lourdes last year). Marvellous little Sophie-Grâce for Tim Dobbin (chaplain to the Canada West province) and Lynn. What closeness already between the daddy and his daughter!

Page 8 Family Album, joy and sorrow And all our congratulations to Ghislain and Isabelle du Chéné on the birth of their third grandchild: the all too beautiful Sixte. His two big sisters, Domitille and Faustine, should be very proud of him! And to finish in a firework of colors, here is the superb little Nemat Allah (which means "Grace of God") son of Fadi Gopal (Kuwait). Welcome, little Nemat! New communities In New Zealand, near Christchurch, birth of a new community Nuku Mai which means Being together. In the south of Holland at Hoensbroek, a community was born on 24 May last. A community of young children is under way in Denmark. Next Christmas, a community will be born in Cotonou, in Benin. Let us thank God for the wonders of his love! Our Farewells Jacques Gaté centre of welcome and his children, theirs and those that he had welcomed with Danièle have all, without exception, despite of all the worries, benefited from the goodness of his heart. This meeting took place exactly 4 1/2 months before 17 August and the message from his son that announced his death said: "After having fought for 4 ½ months against his terrible illness, at dawn on 17 August, Jacques went to the house of the Father in peace and serenity. Farewell, dear Jacques! GdC The rest of the article dedicated to Jacques is on Ghislain du Chéné s blog at Yvonne de Laval worked tirelessly so the pilgrimage was a large and beautiful moment! In France, Yvonne de Laval was one of those intrepid founders of Faith and Light! She also led her priest son, Frédéric, into the great Faith and Light adventure; indeed, he is the regional chaplain in Limousin (Between Two Seas Province). Yvonne has just gone to the Lord. As she was so loved by those who knew her, I am certain that the prayer of all her Faith and Light friends prepared for her a procession of angels to heaven. Let us join our prayer for her to hers for us. GdC Jacques gave us a nasty shock by passing away on the morning of 17 August. Sad news a lot of us remember his commitment to the communities in his province of France East, his sparkling province as he liked to call it! He, too was sparkling! After my election in Lourdes, he was the first to come and see me to tell me that I was cordially invited to come and take part in the provincial meeting that he was organising in spring 2009 in Luxeuil les Bains. I willingly went with Isabelle and Julie and this meeting gave me the opportunity to get to know him better: we all received the apron in the colours of the Faith and Light boat. He had been ironing on these logos one by one, with the home iron, up until the night before the meeting. The sense of service was well developed and Jacques had taken on the mantel of service for Faith and Light. His family was a At the start of Faith and Light, there was Jean and Marie-Hélène, of course, but they were not alone in preparing for the 1971 pilgrimage there were at their sides numerous helpers who Yesterday, we were filled with joy to celebrate Marie-Hélène and today we mourn Madam de Laval who was a great friend. On the 25th anniversary of our community, her words ring in my ears : "You did not forget me!" A lady, a mummy, an unforgettable friend, all qualities requested to enter the Kingdom and have a place of honour near Jesus and Mary. I am going to miss her, she gave me so many wise advices, paid close and delicate attention to me. I mourn her sincerely. Also, rather than sending flowers for her funeral, we send you this 150 cheque for the international solidarity. Kind regards. Denise "Notre Dame de la Confiance", Paris
