John the Baptist was a prophet. (A prophet is a person who has a special power that allows them to say what God wishes to tell people, esp. about things that will happen in the future. John knew that Jesus was special. When Jesus came, two disciples followed him and asked him where he was staying. Jesus invited them to come and see. Can the child: Use all senses to tell what he/she saw, tasted, felt, touched, smelled and heard during the guided imagery Tell you what the lectionary is and how we show it is special Tell you how the Sunday assembly celebrates God s word Recall good deeds that Jesus did? Retelling the story of the Annunciation: Can the child retell the main events of story? An angel visited Mary and told her she was blessed by God. The angel told her she was going to have a baby boy who she will name Jesus. The angel said that this was possible because of the Holy Spirit. The angel told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby soon even though she was very old. Mary said yes to God and allowed these things to happen. Activity: Does the child participate in the Advent celebration? Does he/she enjoy the moments of prayer and reflection? Can the child pray the Hail Mary alone? With assistance? Does the child understand that Mary loves us just like a mother loves her children? Do they honour her as the mother of Jesus by praying the Hail Mary? Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth knew that Mary and her baby were special that they were blessed. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for 3 months until Elizabeth s baby was born. Elizabeth named the baby John. Does the child participate in the Advent celebration? Does he/she enjoy the moments of prayer and reflection? Unit 4, Theme 10: In Advent we respond Does the child listen respectfully to the story of the John the Baptist s witness to God (Luke 3:2)? How do you follow John s message and prepare with your family during Advent for the birth of Jesus? How do we get ready at home, school and in the community? Retelling the story of John the Baptist: Can the child tell you the main events of the story? When Elizabeth s baby grew up, he was known as John the Baptist. He was a prophet who baptized people in the River Jordan. He told the people they should change their ways to get ready for a visit from God. Unit 5: Let s treasure God s gift Unit 5, Theme 11: Jesus is God s gift to us Can the child tell you what some signs of the Christmas season are? What gifts did they bring? Does the child listen respectfully to the Christmas story (Luke 2: 1-20) and the story of the Magi (Matthew 2: 1-12)? Mary and Joseph had to go to the town of Bethlehem to be registered as the law told them they had to. When they got to Bethlehem, there was no place to stay all the rooms in the inns were full. The baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger in the stable. The angels visited the shepherds and told them the good news that Jesus was born. The angels praised God by saying, glory to God in the highest and peace to the people on earth. The shepherds visited Mary and Joseph and told them what the angels had told them. Retelling the story of the Magi: Can the child recall the main elements of the story? The wise men went to King Herod to ask him about the baby who was born. Herod told the wise men to go to Bethlehem to see the baby, and then to come back and tell him what they saw. They followed the star until they found the baby with his mother, Mary. They gave him presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They did not go back to Herod because they were warned in a dream not to. Does the child s illustration accurately depict the Epiphany story? Four men carried a paralysed man to see Jesus, but they couldn t reach him because of the crowd. They cut a hole in the roof and lowered him down to see Jesus. 9 Jesus healed the man because they believed. To prove that he was healed, he told the man to pick up his mat and leave. The man did, and people were amazed. Is he/she caring of things in nature? Does he/she pray for those in need? Unit 6: Let s take Unit 6, Theme 14: We celebrate the work of human hands Does the child participate in the discussion? Can he/she name some of the plants that God put on earth for us to use? Can the child categorize these plants using various classifications? Can the child identify some of the plants they may have as food in his/her home? Can the child tell you where bread and wine come from? Does the child recognize the prayer that is said during Sunday Eucharist (Blessed are you Lord, God of all creation ) Does the child listen respectfully to the reading of the story of creation? Retelling the story of creation: Can the child recall the main elements of the story? God created the world. He created light. He created land and water. He created grass and plants. He created night and day. He created fish and birds. He created animals on the land. He created man and woman. God rested when all was done. Does the child have a sense of wonder and awe for the fruits of God s creation? Does he/she respect these gifts by nurturing them and helping them grow? Retelling the story of the Last Supper: Can the child retell the main events? It was a special meal that Jesus shared with his friends the night before he died. Jesus and his friends retold stories of things God had done in the past. During the meal, Jesus took bread and thanked God for it. He blessed it, broke it and gave it to his friends. He told his friends that this was his body. Jesus took a cup of wine, blessed it and shared it with his friends. He told them that this was his blood. Jesus told them to do this in his memory. Unit 8, Theme 19: Bread broken for you, and cup poured out for you Does the child listen respectfully to the Passion story? Retelling the Passion story: Can the child retell the story of the Passion? After Jesus gave his friends the bread and wine, he told them he was going to die soon. He told them that one of his friends was going to hand him over to his enemies. They went to the Garden of Olives, where he went to pray. He asked his friends to stay awake and pray too. Jesus friends fell asleep, so he woke them up. One of Jesus friends, Judas told the police who to arrest. Peter followed Jesus, but he denied 3 times that he knew Jesus. Jesus was taken to Pilate because he was the ruler and had the power to act as a judge. Pilate didn t think Jesus did anything wrong and wanted to set him free, but the crowd wanted Jesus to die. Pilate gave in to the crowd and had Jesus crucified. Jesus died on the cross. A man took his body down and put him in a tomb. Three days later, some women found that Jesus was not in the tomb. One day after Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to his friends on the beach. His friends did not know it was Jesus. Jesus told them to put their nets in on the right side of the boat. They did and they caught many fish. Jesus told them to bring some of them and he cooked them over a fire. They had breakfast with Jesus. They now knew it was him. Does the child listen respectfully to the Emmaus story (Luke 24: 13-35) Retelling the Emmaus story: Can the child retell the main events of the Emmaus story: Cleopas and his friend were going to a village called Emmaus. As they were walking, Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Jesus. Cleopas and his friend were sad that Jesus died. They told Jesus that they heard that Jesus was not in the tomb and that some women had seen angels who told them that Jesus was alive. They went to the tomb but did not see Jesus. Jesus told them that this is what the bible said would happen that the one sent by God would suffer and die, but God would raise him up again. Cleopas and his friend invited Jesus to stay with them. That night at supper, Jesus blessed and broke the bread and gave it to them. They now knew that is was Jesus. Cleopas and his friend went back to Jerusalem to see the other disciples. The disciples told them about Jesus appearing to Peter. Cleopas told the disciples about what happened to them and how they knew it was Jesus by the breaking of the bread.
