TimeTalent&Treasure Speak, for your servant is listening. With those few words Samuel humbles himself and declares his loyalty and obedience to God. There are perhaps for many of us challenges in those words. Initially Samuel responds Here I am, but thinks it was Eli who called him. The idea of being a servant and the willingness to serve are what may be trials for us in terms of how we live. Samuel does not recognize the voice of the Lord. That, too, may be a problem for us. First we need to be listening. Are we, or are we merely going through the motions? Responding to God with Here I am is a magnificent way to react to God. It is not that God does not know where we are, but saying that can serve as a reminder to us that we are stewards, servants to Him, and it implies we are prepared to hear what He wants us to do. Here I am is said numerous times by those in the Old Testament including Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Isaiah, and by Ananias in the New Testament. When Jesus says, Come follow me, as He does to us, do we hear Him, and even more important do we respond and do we follow? In order to do that properly we have to be prepared to serve Him and others. Thus, like Samuel, we need to listen, and then we need to serve. At a recent papal audience, Pope Francis said, Love and charity are service, helping others, serving others. When you forget yourself and think of others, this is love! 5 SMCHS CARNIVAL INComing up the weekend of February 2nd, 3rd, and 4th is the 67th Annual St. Mary s High School Carnival. The profits from the annual Carnival are distributed back to the five Bismarck Catholic parishes for education purposes. Last year, Ascension Parish received $33, This figure is based on the number of raffle tickets that Ascension parishioners sell. If we sell 15% of the total tickets sold by all parishes, then we receive 15% of the raffle profits. We ask that all parishioners make a concerted effort to sell the GREEN raffle tickets, which you received in the mail in November. The grand prize is a 2018 Dodge Challenger SXT Plus Package. Turn in your tickets to qualify for a weekly drawing for your choice of $10 worth of midway tickets or two dinner tickets for any day of the Carnival. This week s winners are Carter and Renee Jangula. Each Parish is responsible for coordinating volunteers to operate specific game booths on the midway, as well as assist with auctions, help in the Cake Walk Room or Book Room. Additional volunteers are also needed as greeters, as well as set-up and tear-down. To see where you can volunteer for these various activities, please ago to and click on the activity and time slot that works best for you. For those parishioners, who do not have computer access, call Ascension Carnival Chairpersons Troy and Deb Schon at or the parish office at Other aspects of the Carnival for which we will need your assistance are the Baked Goods and Book Room, as well as the Cake Walk. For the Baked Goods room, your favorite breads, pies, cupcakes, cookies, fudge, caramels, divinity, and snack mixes, just to name a few, would be appreciated. We know that Ascension has some excellent bakers because the two bake sales the Ladies of Ascension hold at our church are extremely successful! Cakes, cakes, and more cakes are needed for the Cake Walk. They will be accepted all three days of the Carnival and can be delivered to Room 203. More than 300 cakes were given out last year to both young and old! If you need a place to donate your used books, the Carnival is an excellent place to do so. Beginning Sunday, January 28th, there will be a trailer, parked in the High School parking lot, where the books may be dropped off. If there are any questions, or if you need your baked goods, including cakes for the Cake Walk, and books picked up, please contact Rita Ritter at (home) or (cell). Friday s meal Roast Pork and Saturday s meal Fried Chicken, served each day from 4:30 to 7:30 pm Sunday s meal Pancakes, Sausage, Ham, Scrambled Eggs, served from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Adults $10.00 Children, age 12 and under $5.00
