1 The Epiphany of the Lord Our Lady of Grace Middletown Road Parkton, Maryland Website: PARISH CONTACT INFORMATION Parish Office: , Fax Pastor: Rev. Michael Triplett Pastor Emeritus: Rev. Msgr. Nicholas P. Amato

2 The Epiphany of the Lord January 7, 2018 Who were these foreigners from the East? Matthew tells us very little about this entourage. These are the facts he conveys: 1) referred to as magi, 2) from the east, 3) following a star 4) received by King Herod, 5) read the Jewish scriptures and in fact quoted the prophets, 5) found the child Jesus and Mary, and 6) presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. As with other accounts in Scripture, the other details are added by customs and interpretations through the early Church. What is a magi? From the Greek root, our English language has incorporated the term magician but they were far from students or professors of Hogwarts. In the Hebrew Scriptures, a number of references are made to Magi, with the most notable being Daniel and his companions being added to the magi of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Magi were likely lifetime scholars and advisors to the kings. This also leads to our understanding of wise men, who are called such because of their role as advisors. But why do we often sing of them as We Three Kings. The number three comes from early Church customs, likely due to the three gifts presented to the child Jesus. The title king is first connected with the magi by the early Church theologian Tertullian in the 2nd Century. Were they kings? Much like Daniel exiled in Babylon, Joseph finds himself honored by the Pharaoh, such that he would be treated by all as if he were king himself. Herod, referred to as a king, while having authority was still under the authority of the occupying Romans. As kings, they were not necessarily rulers in the strictest sense, though their wealthy gifts imply a level of influence if not direct authority. We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. What do we learn from these magi, wise men, and kings? They were searching! It is a common experience, particularly for teens or young adults, to question and even entertain doubts. In fact, I d dare to say these experiences sometimes result in true growth in the faith. Yet, this is the important encouragement: search! If you have a question, ask it as we are often reminded in classrooms. After all, there is no such thing as a stupid question (though they might be too simple a statement). Today, we can search for answers real quick to almost any question (though you should have reservations that Google or Alexa can really give you the right answer to many of life s questions). The advice I give to those who are questioning their beliefs and world views: search for the answer. Spend time thinking about the question but also spend time listening for an answer. We can learn a lot from these magi. They had a question, which likely began as what is that star? or what does that star mean? They went looking for the answer, likely in the writings and wisdom of their homelands in the East but not finding a satisfactory answer, they even looked to the Hebrew Scriptures. And they followed their initial leads, continuing to search. Their diligence is the example we require; we ought to encourage those questioning to move from passively waiting for proof (that will not likely come) to actively searching. Motivate them to search for the answer, Jesus who is the Truth, being honest with themselves. In the earliest Church, those searching and developing this relationship with Christ were persecuted to the extent of martyrdom. Martyrdom became the ideal of showing strong discipleship. When Christianity becomes legal, monasticism replaced this ideal as they died to self. These holy women and men sacrificed wealth, positions of authority or prestige, and comforts to search. They silenced the noises of life to listen to the Lord. Today, we have the witness of many religious women and men, who accept vows distancing themselves from wealth and prestige, comforts and luxuries to live simple lives and engage in intentional ministries. They serve us, our families, and our communities by teaching, by leading retreats and engaging in spiritual direction, by caring for the sick, by looking after the needs of the poor and homeless. They focus their entire lives on searching: in prayer and celebration of the sacraments, as well as searching for Christ through the works of mercy. Today, many of the religious communities of women and men have experienced a significant, and in some cases drastic, decline in vocations. Many of these communities have recognized this challenge long ago and have ensured the passing of their knowledge and wisdom to lay men and women who often embrace aspects of the religious charism, a particular pattern of prayer, and an engagement in their work of charity. Our collection today supports many of these religious women and men who are retired, in need to ongoing care and support; their work was done with almost no pay, and certainly little regard for their future care. By donating to the collection, you are thanking those religious women and men who have inspired and encouraged you to search, as those earliest magi did. Our Thursday evening Adult faith group will be continuing their study of Church History with the Epic series. Please consider joining them to learn more about our common history and the struggles of our Church. Our annual Wine Tasting fundraiser will be celebrated on Sunday, January 28. This is both a great social for the community and a strong fundraiser for our parish ministries. Thank you for Steve Golueke and all who lend a hand year after year to ensure this event is a great success in so many way. Happy New Year! YÜA ` ~x 1
