2 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord. 3 Pastor s Column Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, He is risen! He is truly risen! We celebrate today the Second Sunday of Easter, that is, the Octave of Easter the 8 days of Easter Sunday a continuation of our celebration of Our Lord s Passion, Death and Resurrection for you and for me! For this of course we are so very grateful! Gratitude prompts me to offer a word of thanks to all those who had a hand in making the Liturgies of Holy Week so beautiful from Palm Sunday right through the Triduum to Easter Sunday: our priests and deacons, Carlos Campos, our visiting seminarian from El Salvador for his retreat in Spanish; our entire Pastoral, Office and Parish Staff; all who cleaned and decorated; Bob Lampert for the Lenten and Easter banners and the prayer box; our servers, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ministers of Hospitality, Ushers and sacristans; Jenn Kavanagh and our youth who presented the wonderful Shadow Stations; John Rokoszak who coordinated countless details throughout these days; and of course all those involved with the music: Sergio Castillo and Beatriz Lopez and all the singers and instrumentalists of the Hispanic Choir; and thanks to all the choir members and instrumentalists in our music ministry for all their hard work under the direction of our Director of Music, Debra Wyka, who led them all! Thank you again to one and all! Today is also Divine Mercy Sunday what a great opportunity to pause and perhaps pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet or some other prayer, such as the Rosary, to bring to mind our identity as bearers of Christ s mercy by the fact of being members of the parish that bears this name, Our Lady of Mercy! Finally, as I announced last November, for three weekends, beginning today, we will have homilies and speakers to help us renew our understanding of what it means to be Stewardship and Tithing parish. OLM first committed as a parish to Stewardship and Tithing parish in the 1990 s and re-committed to it in the 2000 s, but it has been quite a while since it has been presented. Especially for all of our parishioners and younger people who have not heard about the meaning of Stewardship and Tithing, this will be a great opportunity to commit to this biblical precept, and for each of us to renew our individual and personal commitment to making a return to the Lord with our time, our talents, and our treasure. Continued blessings for the Easter Season to all! Save The Date Saturday, May 19th Fr. Turro s 70th Anniversary of Ordination 5:30PM Mass Reception to follow in the school SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER Peace Throughout the liturgical year we focus on the words, actions, and miracles of Jesus as he moved from town to town. Today we focus especially on the first word of the Risen One as he greeted the disciples on the evening of that first Easter: Peace. The first word from the mouth of God s Son who had been unfairly tried, who had been beaten and spit upon, whose hands and feet were nailed to a tree, who suffered enormous pain in that torturous death was the word Peace. Not Revenge! Not Retribution! Not Kill! Peace. Inspired by the Gospel of Peace After suffering one of the greatest injustices known in history, it would seem that Jesus had every reason to bring down vengeance upon those who had treated him with such unfairness. But instead of vengeance, he spoke of peace. To us this may seem odd. For many of us, almost from the beginning of our lives, we are taught that the response to violence must be revenge. But does this have to be the case? Many of us remember the day when Pope John Paul II was shot in St. Peter s Square. Did he seek revenge on the one who shot him? No; when the pope recovered, he visited his would-be assassin in prison, bringing with him the peace that comes through reconciliation. When this occurred, many in the world were stunned by what seemed to be an unbelievable gesture. They were stunned because this is simply not what the world has come to expect. In his gesture of reconciliation, the pope showed himself as an embodiment of the actions of Christ on that first Easter evening. Today is a day to ponder the fact that Jesus Christ sought to exact no revenge for the way he was treated. Instead he inspired in his followers, and inspires within us, a deep commitment to peace. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MASS For The Day of the Unborn Child The Our Lady of Fatima Knights of Columbus Council at OLM will be commemorating the annual Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child on April 9th, the feast of the Annunciation, at a 7:30PM Mass in the chapel. This event was instituted by the Supreme Council of the Knights to show the Order's commitment to build a culture that respects and protects every human life and to answer the call of Pope Francis and the Bishops to cultivate a Culture of Life. This event is open to all. The biblical account of the Annunciation in the Gospel of St. Luke gives the good news to Mary that she has been chosen to be the Mother of the Lord, and Mary s affirming response to the will of God, Let it be done to me according to Your word. CAN YOU HELP? On April 14th we will have a one-day pre-cana. We have a team to do all the presentations etc., but are in need of some people to help set up and clean up a morning/afternoon coffee break; catered lunch (sandwiches, etc); catered dinner after 5:30 Mass. If able to help call/ the rectory.
