2 THE STEWARDSHIP OF NEIGHBORLINESS by Rev. Thomas Soltis, SELC Stewardship Director THREE CARDINAL RULES ON BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR 1. Be Sensitive to Your Neighbor s needs Everybody has needs. Who doesn t have problems? A pastor once had a sign on his door: Come to me wi your problems and, if you don t have any, come anyway and tell me how you do it. It s God s will to be concerned about e well-being of your neighbor. Cain had a problem wi at. When God asked him regarding his broer, Abel, he said: Am I my broer s keeper? (Genesis 4:9) Christian stewardship involves being our broer s keeper. 1 John 2:10 states: whoever loves his broer lives in e light. Jesus taught: Love your neighbor as yourself. (Matew 19:19b) In e Parable of e Good Samaritan a penetrating question is posed: Which of ese ree do you ink was neighbor to e man who fell into e hands of robbers? An expert in e law replied: The one who had mercy on him. Jesus told him (and us): Go and do likewise. The word steward means caretaker. Christian stewardship involves a commitment to care about our neighbors especially in eir time of need. 2. Mind Your Manners Politeness is essential for good neighborliness. The words, Please and May I, are necessary for cordial relationships. Humble requests are usually met; demands are resisted and tend to alienate. How sweet e sound of e words, Thank You. Showing appreciation beyond words wi a ank you card or gift cements neighborly relationships. And don t be invasive. Respect your neighbor s right to privacy. Excessive time in conversation could end up a resented intrusion. Then again, no neighbor is perfect. To forgive and forget is necessary for neighborly stability. To err is human; to forgive is divine wrote Alexander Pope. Everyone has quirks, including you. So be understanding. Be ready to overlook e faults of your neighbors. Accept em for who ey are. When ings fly awfully awry, listen patiently, keep your cool, zip your lip, count to a hundred and walk away wi a smile. Repaying evil wi good helps heal ailing relationships. 3. Mind Your Own Business Do you have a nosy neighbor or are you e neighborhood snoop? A Nosy Neighbor Survey was conducted by ServiceMagic.com. Here s a sampling: Have you ever caught a neighbor red-handed in an act of being nosy? a. No 28% b. Yes 67% c. No, but it s only a matter of time 5% What kinds of snooping do you suspect go on where you live now or in e past? (Select all at apply) a. Eavesdropping 32% b. Looking rough trash cans 7% c. Gossiping about oer neighbors 62% d. Looking over e backyard fence 48% e. Watching ru e window 73% Sometimes its good to have a watchful neighbor like e time one told you about your teenager rowing a wild party when you weren t home. But ere s a difference between being a watchful neighbor and a meddling snoop. Snoopy neighbors love to get involved in everyone else s business, delight in gossip and are quicker an a snake to strike and report you whenever for whatever. Good fences make good neighbors wrote e poet, Robert Frost. Respect your neighbor s privacy. Don t be a meddlesome neighbor like e young widows in 1 Timoy 5:13 - gossips and busybodies, saying ings ey ought not to. Shaking hands as an act of trust, friendship and nonaggression originated during e Roman Empire. Clasping right hands was symbolical of disarming hands from aggressive assault. 2

3 100 Years of Blessing Jesus Christ is e Same Yesterday and Today and Forever by Tim Hasko By e grace of God, on May 4, 2008 two-hundred worshipers filled Pentecost LC in Racine, WI to capacity to joyfully celebrate 100 years of ministry. The service included many musicians and vocalists, including organ, trumpets, flutes, clarinets, trombone, baritone, french horn, piano, guitars, e Pentecost choir, and praise group. The altar area was adorned wi a breataking display of 100 red gladiolas, reminiscent of e tongues of fire on e first day of Pentecost in e book of Acts. Pastors Gundlach, Luchterhand, Lopez, Konz, Babel, Biber, and Puig Cizmar who served e congregation from Seven very special pastors participated in e service. Rev. Milan Babel, Pastor Emeritus of Pentecost ( ); Rev. Carlos Puig (Sugarland, TX), Spiritual Son (1978) and first pastor of Primera Iglesia Luterana; Rev. Thomas Konz (Stephenville, TX), Spiritual Son (1986); Rev. Paul Biber (St. Louis, MO), former Pentecost pastor ( ); Rev. Karl Luchterhand, vacancy pastor and Lueran High School teacher; Rev. Ted Gundlach, frequent guest pastor and friend of e congregation; and Rev. Pedro Lopez, current pastor of Primera Iglesia Luterana. Many special worshipers were present also, including four families of our charter members, and e daughters of sainted pastor Rev. Martin The service included two hymns written by former members of e congregation. O Gracious Lord was written by Gary P. Dennison in honor of Pentecost s 75 anniversary in The hymn Go My Children was written by Rev. Jaroslav Vajda, son of Pentecost pastor Rev. John Vajda ( ). The service included a remembrance of e sainted pastors who served Pentecost during her 100 year history. The readings for e day included Isaiah 12:2-5 ( Sing to e Lord, for he has done glorious ings; let is be known to all e world. ); Hebrews 13:7-8, 17, ( Remember your leaders, who spoke e word of God to you ); and Matew 16:13-19 ( on is rock I will build my church, and e gates of Hades will not overcome it ) The Lord s prayer was recited in e Slovak language by e Sunday School; sung in Spanish by Pastor Lopez; and spoken in English by e congregation, symbolizing e ree languages worship services have been conducted in at Pentecost. After e service, e worshipers recessed to e sou lawn of e church, where a picture of e whole congregation was taken from a bucket truck. A banquet was held at Sou Hills Country Club, which was attended by approximately 170 people. What a blessing it was to have our two Spiritual Sons, our former pastors, Pastor Cizmar s family, and so many former members and special friends present wi us on is historic day. We recognize at e Lord has blessed Pentecost Lueran Church in so many ways in e past 100 years, and look forward to His leading in e years to come. To God alone be e glory! 3

4 LUTHERAN HAVEN CELEBRATES 60 YEARS by Robin Paris Saturday morning, May 31, dawned hot and dry as e workers rushed about, preparing every last detail for e Celebration Worship service and Slovak lunch at were planned. The huge white tent, e stage, and e round tables and chairs were in place. The rainbow ribbons on e worship banner fluttered in e slight breeze. Each table was festive wi its splash of colored tableclo, e bright blooms donated by Lukas Nursery, and flowerpots for each attendee loaded wi Shasta daisy seed packets, multicolored recipe cards and Slovak cookies. The campus fairly hummed wi anticipation as cars, golf carts, and walkers arrived. A brass fanfare floated across e field and called nearby residents to join e crowd at e tent. And en it began... The service was a blend of e 1948 dedication of e old folks home and e children s home. Because Pastor Andrew Daniel was forward-inking, his words, recorded on seven inch copper disks, were played to call e people ere to worship in e name of e Triune God in Slovak. Then e brass and organ took over as e tent was very nearly lifted by e sound of voices singing Praise to e Lord, e Almighty. Highlights of e worship service included Rev. Dr. W illiam Utech s visually and verbally inspiring message based on Mark 9:33-37, calling us back to our baptism and to selfless, renewed service in Christ s name. SELC President, e Rev. Dr. Carl Krueger surprised everyone by chanting bo e Lord s Prayer and e Benediction in Slovak. A twelve-minute video, Generations of Caring Caring for Generations was shown at captured e history, e ministry, and e vision of Lueran Haven (Copies are available by request). Pres. Krueger remembered e recently departed Jaroslov Vajda, who had written e Anniversary Hymn for e Haven s 50. The words were just as meaningful as we sang em Saturday. Everyone present joined eir voices in recommitting is place to God s service and ministry for anoer 60 years! The brass and organ closed e worship service wi Our God, Our Help in Ages Past. Some of ose who participated had been present at e original dedication in May of Carl Fabry is now on e Board of Trustees. Lillian Wiebel, who in 1948 told e crowd, Please come back next year, came to e podium to say, You finally came! Board Chair Susan Duda Hanas, granddaughter of Andrew Duda, Sr., shared remarks and memories at e end of e service. Greetings and congratulations were shared by e Honorable Tom Feeney, U.S. Congressman from e 24 Congressional District, e Honorable Bob Dallari, Seminole County Commissioner, and President Gerhard C. Michael, Jr. from e Florida-Georgia District.... and en ere was lunch. Delicious!!! FROM EXILE TO THE PROMISED LAND A tour to Egypt and Israel, Jan 29 Feb 9, 2009, Hosted by Rev. 5 Consecrated Stewards Program at St. Matew s, Wilkes-Barre by Rev. Joseph Weaerell St. John s LC - Hazleton, PA st On Sunday, June 1, parishioners at St. Matew s in Wilkes-Barre celebrated Consecration Sunday at eir 7:30 and 9:45am services. Consecrated Stewards is an eight-week stewardship program presented by Capital Funding Services, a ministry of e Lueran Church Extension Fund, and is based on e New Consecration Sunday program developed by Herb Miller. Rev. Joseph Weaerell of St. John s in Hazleton served as guest leader for e program and delivered e sermon for e Consecration Sunday services. Rev. Gary Sharer of St. Matew s was e liturgist. Near e end of e worship services, members completed Estimate of Giving cards indicating eir weekly giving expectations for e next year. Consecrated Stewards is based upon e need of e giver to give in response to God s grace, and not on e needs of e church. The Biblical principles of percentage-based, grace motivated, sacrificial giving are e focus of e program, conducted rough e four week program phase, which includes Bible studies, sermons, stewardship witnessing, and celebrating e ministries of e congregation. A celebration luncheon was held following e 9:45 service. Following e meal, e results of e increased giving were announced. The projected total increase in giving for e coming year was $24,579.50, or a 26% total increase in annual giving. The congregation joyfully gave anks to e Lord wi e singing of e common Doxology. The planning team was responsible for mailings, worship service presentations, luncheon planning and reservations, financial reporting, and personal member contacts. Bob Novak served as e general chairman. Committee members were Jean Decker, Financial secretary; Mark Klimek, publicity chair; Steve Washicosky, reservations chair; George Walker, Sr., events chair; Andy Sofranko, spiritual chair; Kim Novak, Christian Ed chair; Rev. Gary Sharer, pastor; and Rev. Joseph Weaerell, certified guest leader. Eastern Circuit Confirmation Retreat by Rev. Joseph Weaerell The four annual Confirmation Retreat was held at Camp Lebanon in Lebanon, NJ on e weekend of April 18-20, There were 20 you, including two you from St. John's, in attendance. The you came from congregations in NJ, and PA for fellowship, Bible study, games, and fun. The eme for is year s retreat was The Apostle's Creed. There were games, skits, worship, and devotions. Five pastors and one vicar led sessions which covered e ree articles of e Creed. Pastor Andy Dzurovcik from Zion, Clark, led e Friday evening session wi an introduction to e Creed and e First Article, which deals wi Creation. Pastor Dan Grams from Holy Trinity in Garfield, led e Saturday morning session which concluded e study on e First Article and God's providence. Pastor W ally Vinovskis from Concordia, Macungie and Pastor Joe Weaerell from St. John's, Hazleton led sessions on e Second Article, discussing e person of Jesus and His work of redemption. Pastor Ron Jones from St. Paul, Raritan, led e Saturday evening session on e Third Article and e work of e Holy Spirit and e Church. Vicar Mike Dunne from Zion, Clark, led e Sunday morning session and discussed e forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. The group also participated in a procession of e Stations of e Cross wi twelve stops along e way to impress upon em e Passion of Jesus. The weaer over e weekend was perfect and allowed for many activities to be done outside including one of e sessions Saturday morning. On Saturday night, ey watched e movie Luer, a history of e Reformation. A great time was had by a l l i n attendance. The date for next year s retreat is tentatively set for e last weekend in April. 5

6 What shall we do about Fan into Flame? by Rev. Paul Hoyer, Holy Cross LC, Lake Mary FL These were my oughts at e April Board of Directors meeting. As e discussion continued, we knew at we agreed wi e Ablaze concept of witnessing and e whole idea of an Ablaze Movement seems like someing at every mission minded church should support. The suggestion from e district was at we consider a gift equal to 10% of our congregational giving for is year spread over a ree year time period. We had offerings at were around $700, and so we quickly figured we were talking about a ree year goal of $70,000.00! After discussion it was decided at is was a reasonable goal, but how to reach at goal? Holy Cross is in e second year of a ree year 1.5 million dollar capital campaign and we know at if our vision is to be realized we will need at least two more ree year campaigns to follow is one! The focus of our vision is to change e community at we live in and make an impact on e needs of our community. Therefore, in November 2006 we began Illuminating e Community Wi Christ, a campaign at has allowed us to build a free heal Clinic for ose wiout insurance, build eight new classrooms for our new middle school, as well as seed money for a piece of property for a Student Center for our community. This campaign will be followed by anoer to build e Center and en one more to build a High School facility. The idea of having an additional campaign to raise money for Fan Into Flame seemed ridiculous! However after prayer and furer discussion e idea was conceived to include e $70, goal in e amount to be raised in e next ree year campaign. So is is e plan for Holy Cross... at we will do a giving campaign in at will raise money to build a student center and $70, for is evangelism campaign. We truly believe at God will bless our efforts, when ey are focused outside of ourselves. New, Gospel-infused verses for In The Garden! In The Garden is in public domain in Nor America, so Pastor Gary Scharrer has written alternate verses. These verses redeem e lovely chorus of fellowship by basing at fellowship upon a remembering of e Gospel and God s Word, not upon creation alone. This may be used at any appropriate time, but especially for e occasion of funerals, for which I ve found it often requested. In The Garden by C. Austin Miles and Gary Scharrer (new verses 1&3 by Scharrer) CLI Song ID#: (simply print or project words when using and include in your reporting period). (For permission to use wiout ccli, garyandsara@saltlightcity.com). I come to e garden and know How Christ gave His life to forgive me Pierced rough His side, On a cross He died Dea s prisoners to free. Chorus: And He walks wi me. And He talks wi me. And he tells me I am His own. And e joy we share As we tarry ere None oer has ever known. He speaks and e sound of his voice Is so sweet e birds hush eir singing And e melody at he gave to me Wiin my heart is ringing. (Chorus) Though one Day He ll wipe every tear, Still, for now, so many are falling. Though I now remain In is world of pain, His promise I m recalling. (Chorus) 6
