Old Testament Deuteronomy 32,34-43 [Then Moses spoke in e hearing of all e people of e assembly of Israel e words of is song:] [Then e LORD said:] Is it not laid up in store wi Me, Sealed up in My treasuries? 35 Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, In due time eir foot will slip; For e day of eir calamity is near, And e impending ings are hastening upon em. 36 For e LORD will vindicate His people, And will have compassion on His servants;
2 When He sees at eir streng is gone, And ere is none remaining, bond or free. And He will say, Where are eir gods, The rock in which ey sought refuge? Who ate e fat of eir sacrifices, And drank e wine of eir libation? Let em rise up and help you, Let em be your hiding place! See now at I, I am He, And ere is no god beside Me; It is I who put to dea and give life. I have wounded, and it is I who heal; And ere is no one who can deliver from My hand. Indeed, I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, as I live forever, If I fashion My flashing sword, And My hand takes hold of justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, And I will repay ose who hate Me. I will make My arrows drunk wi blood, And My sword shall devour flesh, Wi e blood of e slain and e captives, From e long-haired leaders of e enemy. Rejoice, O nations, wi His people; For He will avenge e blood of His servants, And will render vengeance on His adversaries, And will atone for His land and people. Epistle Ephesians 3,13-21 Therefore I ask you not to lose heart at my tribulations on your behalf, for ey are your glory. 14 For is reason I bow my knees before e Faer, 15 from Whom every family in heaven and on ear derives 16 its name, at He would grant you, according to e riches of His glory, to be strengened wi power rough His 17 Spirit in e inner man, so at Christ may dwell in your hearts rough fai; and at you, being rooted and 18 grounded in love, may be able to comprehend wi all e saints what is e bread and leng and height and dep, 19 and to know e love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, at you may be filled up to all e fullness of God. 20 Now to Him Who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all at we ask or ink, according to e 21 power at works wiin us, to Him be e glory in e church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. GRADUAL For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, You will make known to me e pa of life. I will extol You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up, And have not let my enemies rejoice over me. O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You did heal me. O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, at I should not go down to e pit. Sing praise to e LORD, you His godly ones, And give anks to His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for e night, But a shout of joy comes in e morning.
3 Hallelujah! O Lord, deal wi Your servant according to Your mercy and teach me Your statutes. I am Your servant, give me understanding at I may know Your testimonies. [sing: triple Hallelujah] The Holy Gospel Luke 7,11-17 Response: Glory be to Thee, O Lord! And it came about soon afterwards, at Jesus went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along 12 wi Him, accompanied by a large multitude. Now as He approached e gate of e city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, e only son of his moer, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from e city 13 was wi her. And when e Lord saw her, He felt 14 compassion for her, and said to her, Do not weep. And He came up and touched e coffin; and e bearers came to a halt. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise! 15 And e dead man sat up, and began to speak. And Jesus 16 gave him back to his moer. And fear gripped em all, and ey began glorifying God, saying, A great prophet has arisen among us! and, God has visited His people! 17 And is report concerning Him went out over Judea, and in all e surrounding district. [Scripture passage are from e New American Standard Bible, The Lockman Foundation, used by permission] Response: Praise be to Thee, O Christ! Immanuel Begins: On Monday, 24 August, e academic year began at Immanuel Lueran in Eau Claire, WI. During e opening service, President Sippert reminded e student body of our Savior's grow plan rough e Word of God. High school enrollment begins wi 111 total students (24 freshmen, 25 sophomores, 29 juniors, and 33 seniors). This is a drop of 13 students from last year, mostly because e incoming freshman class is a little smaller an last year's graduating class. In e college ere are 23 total students, a nice increase from last year's enrollment of 15. At is time six of ese students are pursuing e teaching ministry and ten are preparing for seminary training. While seminary will begin later, six students are expected for e year. We ank e Lord for all ose blood-bought souls at will be immersed in His Word during eir Immanuel experience. A Note from e Moderator of e CLC re CLC Convention in June 2016: This is a reminder at e 2016 CLC Convention will be held for e first time over a weekend. The dates established by e 2014 Convention are Thursday, June 23 (8:00 a.m. Registration; 10:00 a.m. Opening Session) rough Sunday, June 26 (3:00 p.m. Closing). The Convention Communion service will also serve to begin our CLC s celebration of e 500 Anniversary of e Lueran Reformation. The service will be held Saturday afternoon wi a time tentatively set for 3:30 p.m. St. Matew, Apostle and Evangelist (21 September). St. Matew, also known as Levi, identifies himself as a former tax collector, one who was erefore considered to be unclean, a public sinner, outcast from e Jews. Yet it was such a one as is whom Jesus called away from his occupation and weal to become a disciple (Mt 9,9-13). Not only did Matew become a disciple of Jesus, he was also called and sent as one of e Lord s twelve apostles (Mt 10,2-4). In time, he became e evangelist whose inspired Gospel was granted first place in e ordering of e New Testament. Among e four Gospels, Matew s portrays Christ especially as e new and greater Moses, who graciously fulfills e Law and e Prophets (Mt 5,17) and establishes a new covenant of salvation in and wi His own blood (Mt
5 26,27-28). Matew s Gospel is also known and beloved for its record of e visit of e Magi (Mt 2,1-12); for e Sermon on e Mount, including e Beatitudes and e Lord s Prayer (Mt 5-7); and for e institution of Holy Baptism and e most explicit revelation of e Holy Trinity (Mt 29,16-20). Tradition is uncertain where his final field of labor was and wheer Matew died naturally or a martyr s dea. In e symbolism of Christian art, Matew is represented as a man wi wings. [In large part, taken from Treasury of Daily Prayer, general editor, Scott A. Kinnaman (St. Louis, Concordia Publishing House, 2008)] Apology of e Augsburg Confession (22 September 1630). After e public reading of e Augsburg Confession on 25 June1530, e Luerans were to receive e emperor s reply, which came on 3 August. It was read to e Luerans and soon became known as e Pontifical Confutation of e Augsburg Confession. The Luerans heard e reply but were not given a copy of it; alough during e reading ey made extensive stenographic notes, which later proved to be quite accurate (e Confutation was not published until 1573). The Confutation, alough diplomatic, had a message at was clear: back down, or else. Furer meetings between e eologians of bo sides were called for. Two series of meetings were held, August and 24 August. Alough Melanchon was willing to compromise somewhat, e Luerans held firm. In private, Emperor Charles V pressured e Lueran princes, even reatening to exile em and confiscate eir realms and possessions. Luer urged e princes to stand firm. By 22 September e first draft of e Lueran reply, e Apology to e Augsburg Confession, was ready; e word Apology means defense. Even ough e Luerans tried to give Charles a copy, he refused to accept it. Melanchon en began working on a revision, which was published on 15 April The Apology is e longest and most detailed confession in e Book of Concord (1580). It carefully works rough e Confutation, specifically refuting errors and setting for e correct Scriptural teaching on each disputed point. The driving force in e Apology is e repeated insistence at e Bible s most important and comforting teaching is e justification by grace alone, rough fai alone, on account of Christ alone. Even ough e Apology was originally considered to be Melanchon s private opinion, it was adopted as one of e binding confessions of e Lueran Church. [In large part, adapted from Editor s Introduction to e Apology of e Augsburg Confession, in Concordia: The Lueran Confessions: A Reader s Edition of e Book of Concord, general editor, Paul Timoy McCain (St. Louis, Concordia Publishing House, 2006)]
