2 Liturgy Notes Presider s Intentions This week, our presiders will offer Masses for these intentions: Monday, July 20 St. Apolinaris 8:30 AM (SJ) Katie & Andy Lodes Tuesday, July 21 St. Lawrence of Brindisi 8:30 AM (SJ) Bill Williams The Cathedral of Saint Peter is the Seat of the Diocese of Wilmington and the Bishop s own church. This beautiful and historic church is in need of our help. The weekend of August 22 & 23, a special collection for the maintenance and preservation of the Cathedral of Saint Peter will be taken up in all parishes in our diocese. Please be as generous as you can. For more information, including a letter from Bishop Malooly, a message from the Cathedral s Administrator and a video tour of the Cathedral, go to Wednesday, July 22 St. Mary Magdalene 9:00 AM (SR) George Shestock Thursday, July 23 8:30 AM (SJ) Regina Collins St. Bridget Friday, July 24 St. Sharbel Makhluf 8:30 AM (SJ) Robert Kuberski Saturday, July 25 5:00 PM (SJ) Our Parishioners Sunday, July 26 17th Sunday in Ordinal Time 8:30 AM (SJ) Frank Collins 10:30 AM (SJ) Patricia Beldelamente 1:00 PM (SJ) 8:00 AM (SR) William Hughes 9:30 AM (SR) George Barczewski CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD There's a bit of a "missing link" in the first two sentences of today's Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two ("one who is sent" is the meaning of "apostle"). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus' name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn't have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the Lord to hear what we've sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God's name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world. 3 The Word in Our Lives: Readings for July 26, 2015 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinal Time First Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44 A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the firstfruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, Give it to the people to eat. But his servant objected, How can I set this before a hundred people? Elisha insisted, Give it to the people to eat. For thus says the LORD, They shall eat and there shall be some left over. And when they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 145:10-11, 15-16, (16) Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Gospel: John 6:1-15 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, Where can we buy enough food for them to eat? He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, Two hundred days wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many? Jesus said, Have the people recline. Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted. So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world. Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king,he withdrew again to the mountain alone.
