Dear Friend, We re told Jesus went to an earthly city, and he wept over it. 1 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, he said, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing He wept over that city. He identified with its people. He preached the gospel in that city, and he sacrificed himself for it. Jesus built a heavenly city by coming and dying in an earthly city. You too can be part of Jesus city-building program by going into an earthly city, weeping over it, identifying with it, and making sacrifices for it. Are you ready to join Jesus work in the cities of the world? In Him, Tim Keller Founder / Chairman Redeemer City to City

City to City is leading on a new frontier. 2 And so are the church planters and ministry and marketplace trailblazers we invest in. Including you. We help leaders pioneer how to live out the gospel on the new frontier. The new frontier? Our 21st century urbanized world.

2 1 new churches + gospel leaders + publishing and digital = City to City New Churches Our primary goal is to help start new churches that meet the spiritual and physical needs of their cities. This involves working directly with local leaders to start new churches, as well as with networks, denominations, and other agencies involved in church planting and leadership development in each city. Gospel Leaders Our main role is to train and coach entrepreneurial pastors in the unique skills and mindsets needed to start self-sustaining, biblically faithful churches that reach city dwellers. We also train pastoral, cultural, and marketplace leaders to bring the power of the gospel to every part of life and ministry. Publishing and Digital We work with Tim Keller and others to develop books, studies, and online campaigns that address the questions of the city with the gospel. These resources reach tens of thousands of leaders who seek to live faithfully and minister effectively in the 21st century.

God is moving people to cities. 4 For the first time, the world is 50% urban. By 2050, 75% of the human race will work, worship, play, raise families, live in a city. 5 MILLION new people each month move to a city. That s like two new Chicagos every month. TODAY 2050

We believe it s so they can hear the gospel. 5 God designed the city to release human potential, to shelter the weak, and to compel spiritual searching. Not every Christian is called to live in a city, but everyone can help love, bless, and rebuild the city in some way. Are you a city builder?

In cities In cities you you have have 6 MORE IMAGE OF GOD

7 PER SQUARE INCH than than anywhere anywhere else in else the in world. the world.

Cities must be our missions priority. 8 As God moves people to cities, they are pressed together practically, racially, economically, spiritually. In this new urbanized world it is possible to reach them all at once. + The young move to cities for opportunity and advancement. + The elites continue to guide the centers of culture and commerce. + The poor and the elderly have greater access to goods, services, and physical safety. + Immigrant groups move to cities for freedom, economic safety and more dense ethnic community. Cities are full of poor people because cities attract poor people, not because cities make people poor. Millions of the least advantaged come to urban areas not because cities are bad for them, but because cities are good for them. Ed Glaeser Harvard University

Because the world is on its way to becoming 10 75% urban, we all need a theological vision that is distinctly urban. Even if you don t go to the city... make no mistake, the city is coming to you. TIM KELLER Center Church

Cities shape all of us. Every place and every generation is more urban than it was five years ago Cities are mass exporters of culture, products, and trends. + Cities are asking the next generation s questions today. + Cities are a powerful proving ground for the gospel. Ministry in global cities helps us do ministry in every city. The jury is out on whether America can openly accept its urban condition... the big, complex, messy, metropolitan way in which the majority of Americans (and now, our global counterparts) live their lives. Alan Berube Brookings Institution

Cities need a new kind of church. 12 We believe cities need not just gospelbelieving churches but gospel-centered churches. So we help start churches that combine qualities typically not found together. Only the gospel makes this possible.

the gospel is preached faithfully doctrine is Biblically sound believers are edified disciples apply faith to their work rooted in a tradition financially self-supporting lived out for the common good applied to the culture s questions skeptics are welcomed to the poor cooperative with other churches generous in mission

New churches are a sound mission. 14 New churches are scriptural. As the Christian movement grew in the book of Acts, the apostles appointed elders in each church, and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust (Acts 23:14). Local communities have always been the primary building block of the body of Christ.* New churches are evangelistic. Close neighborhood connections, hunger for growth, and openness to innovation make them much more effective at evangelism than established churches. New churches make new leaders. They create opportunities for pastors and members to take risks, take ownership and lead their congregations and cities. * When in doubt, read the directions.

New churches are a sound investment. 15 New churches become self-supporting. As churches grow, congregational giving funds the church from within and eliminates the need for outside sources. New churches give money away. Churches, and the leaders they develop, then start funding new work all over a city new businesses and nonprofits, mercy and justice ministries, arts and civic initiatives. New churches recycle capital. Churches that receive grants from City to City commit to give those startup funds forward to new churches in their city or region.* New churches revive existing churches. New churches try new things. By necessity they are innovators and early adopters in ministry practices, setting the pace for the other churches in the community. * We are excited about our grant model, the City Renewal Fund. Please check out page 24.

New churches are city climate-changers. 16 When the gospel takes root in a city: + Christian citizens serve generously all over the place. + New businesses and nonprofit organizations are launched. + Believers integrate their faith with their work so that every job is a kingdom activity. + Christians move into leadership positions in the city. + Christians and churches support and commission artists. + Influential leaders set free power, wealth, and influence for the good of those on the margins of society. They also advance ministry and start new churches. In the long run, the city experiences less crime and corruption, more committed families, more respect for human dignity, and more God-honoring cultural expressions.

New churches are like a spiritual New churches are like a spiritual well in the city. When people are thirsty, you can bring them water, or you can help them build a well. When people are spiritually thirsty, you can help them start a church. 17 well in the city. When people are thirsty, you can bring them water, or you can help them build a well. When people are spiritually thirsty, you can help them start a church.

No work can possibly confer a greater benefit upon mankind than the training of ministers whom God has chosen, for around them spring up churches, schools, and all the agencies of religion and philanthropy. CHARLES SPURGEON

We help start a new kind of church. 19 Of these churches, 93% have been successful. This means they launch, grow, and become self-sustaining. For every church we help to start, we find that 2-3 other new churches also start. This is because when just one new church gets off the ground in a city, it creates a ripple effect.

We find and develop leaders in the art and science of starting new churches. Consider that a new church is a start-up. With over 250 years of church planting experience on the CTC team, we design and deliver programs for kingdomminded entrepreneurs. We invest in these leaders spiritually, vocationally, and financially. 22 Pastors from around the world are beginning to come in a steady stream to New York City to glean what they can... Their goal is to learn how to create similarly effective churches in cosmopolitan cities like New York, which exert outsize influence on the prevailing culture but have traditionally been neglected... Tim Keller as quoted in The New York Times

We... + have an eye for raw talent 23 + do intense assessment + create a dynamic learning environment + host ministry simulation exercises + personalize our coaching + provide one-on-one mentoring + act as a lab to discuss models, theory and experiments in new churches + challenge church planters to figure out just how their cities need the gospel

We give grants. For many leaders who start churches, we provide startup capital in the form of grants. We designed a sustainable approach called the City Renewal Fund (CRF). 24 Step 1: The Gift 100% of any gift given through the City Renewal Fund goes to start a church. Step 2: New Church We help start a gospel-minded church that works to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the city. Step 3: Give it Forward Once started, this church gives money to start other new churches in its city or region.

Step 4: A Self-Sustaining Cycle The power of CRF becomes apparent when gifts into the fund mix and multiply. We project that 20 churches receiving initial grants will in turn resource 40 more churches within a decade. CTC has given nearly $1m in CRF grants, and the initial recipients are already paying forward.

We create content. We work with Tim Keller to plan, develop, and distribute his books and resources to the world. 27 So far, nearly 25 titles are available, spanning 25 languages. But to us, content is far more than publishing books for the readers of the world. Content helps us recruit, develop, and empower leaders on the new frontier of cities. It allows our theological vision and ministry approach to be shared, scaled, and adapted with integrity. Because the world is becoming more urban, these resources are in great demand everywhere, not just cities.

The leaders of these networks take responsibility for the planning and support of their churches; CTC plays a supporting or catalytic role as needed. We also connect members of these local networks to our global network of practitioners. 29

TODAY A VISION FOR THE FUTURE 2025

IN 2014, WITH MUCH THOUGHT, COUNSEL, AND PRAYER, WE ASKED OURSELVES: 1. How can CTC accelerate the current ministry of starting new churches in cities? How can CTC reach new leaders, in new places, in new and better ways? 3. How can CTC and its mission be passed to the next generation? We developed a trajectory for the next decade and a detailed roadmap for the next 3 years.

WITH GOD S HELP, CTC WILL: + build stronger affiliates like CTC Europe, CTC Asia Pacific, CTC Australia, and CTC Latin America 32 + expand our team of catalysts who recruit, coach, and train in the field + triple our work in North America to help start churches in over 15 cities and train pastors in dozens more + invest in a pipeline of leaders for New York City with internships, apprentice programs, a seminary, and an aggressive plan to start hundreds of new churches + launch a retail strategy to train and coach ministry and marketplace leaders

BE LOOKING FOR THESE CITY TO CITY OUTCOMES BY 2025: 75 global cities activated 1,000 new churches started 25,000 leaders trained 60 networks formed 3M readers reached We re asking a group of leadership donors to invest in this 10-year vision. 40 Revival. 34 We labor and pray for a global revival. When Christianity first spread, the Apostles went from city to city to tell people about Jesus. Since then, many of the historic revivals and advances of Christianity have come from and through cities. We believe that cities are once again leading the world to Christ. Do you see it? Are you ready to join us in the cities of the world?

Programs INTERNATIONAL INTENSIVE The International Intensive is a five-week program held in New York City to train church planters from global cities. The program is designed to prepare urban church planters by exposing them to urban church planting concepts, theological resources to grow churches, leadership modules, and other church planting principles. Participants in the Intensive are selected through an extensive recruiting and screening process. INCUBATOR The Incubator is our key two-year program to serve, train, and develop church planters in New York City and selected other strategic cities. Each learning module addresses the specific needs of urban planters, including skills in thinking theologically about ministry, and growth in the various areas of urban ministry. Church planters go through the program during the critical phase of launching their congregations and get practical help on writing their action plan, philosophy of ministry, crucial ministry development, and preaching, among others. Typically, this training is accompanied by coaching to encourage the planter to perform to the maximum extent of his giftedness. TRAIN THE TRAINER This program orients trainers to CTC s urban church planter Incubator curriculum, a two-year course that can be adapted for their city. We believe that by employing a training curriculum that increasingly reflects the practitioners own culture, leaders will develop a locally delivered training program that more effectively serves church planters. GOSPEL IN THE CITY Gospel in the City is a two-day learning experience that exposes urban leaders to a vision about the centrality of the gospel a theological and practical understanding of how the gospel shapes all of life, from the heart, to a church and to a city. It is delivered through plenary sessions and group learning experiences and usually hosted by local partners. FELLOWS PROGRAM The Fellows Program is designed for individuals one to two years away from planting a church in New York City. It is a one-year course of study intended to give participants a realistic expectation of life and ministry in the city context. 40

CITY LAB City Lab is a half-day training experience for New York City church leadership teams. Each bimonthly event includes a plenary talk and a Q&A with Tim Keller, a panel discussion featuring pastors from NYC s five boroughs, and direct facilitation by CTC s senior staff. City Lab brings together over 200 pastors, church planters, and ministry leaders from many diverse NYC neighborhoods. CITY TO CITY LEARNING CTC Learning gathers the best of our in-person training programs into online and hybrid online/ in-person courses. Some will be facilitated by our staff, others by trainers we certify in key cities and networks, and others by anyone interested in being shaped by CTC s approach to gospel ministry and church planting. CTC PARTNERSHIP CTC Partnership helps established churches use their missions budget to sponsor new churches in global cities. We partner with the church to involve their congregations in supporting the new church and establishing a relationship between the two churches. We also train the church s leaders in gospel ministry using an adapted version of our church planter training. FAITH, WORK AND LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE The Faith, Work and Leadership Initiative seeks to help churches and church planting networks in North America and around the world develop effective, gospel-centered marketplace leaders. REDEEMER CITY MINISTRY Redeemer City Ministry is a brand new program offering graduate-level theological education in partnership with Reformed Theological Seminary. Based entirely in NYC, candidates will pursue a Master of Arts (Biblical Studies) and prepare for ministry in NYC and other cities. APPRENTICE PROGRAM The Apprentice Program is designed to help churches identify, equip, and mobilize young leaders. Apprentices receive nine months of training from CTC and coaching from their pastor while completing a ministry assignment in their local church. The Apprentice Program is the first stage of the leadership development pipeline in NYC. 41

CLARA LEE Manager, Content Clara develops content and resources for CTC s websites. She also manages permissions requests, foreign translations, and content distribution. She graduated from New York University and spent a number of years working at Nature Publishing Group, where she handled customer service and operations. She also spent a year with a mission in Trujillo, Peru s third largest city. Clara originally hails from Southern California and now lives in Harlem. TIM COX Manager, Digital Tim Cox connects existing churches and their congregations to the cause of new churches for better cities. His work in recruiting and web marketing for three Christian universities prepared him for his role. His degree in music did not. 50 Tim and his wife Karen live in Park Slope, Brooklyn with their five cats.

RUBEN SOTO Program Manager, New York City Ruben oversees two new CTC programs: the Partnership Program and City Lab. He comes to CTC from being the Director of Ministry Relations at Nyack College, where he developed partnerships between the college and area churches. He also spent several years as an active lay leader at Brooklyn Tabernacle. Ruben is working on his MA in Biblical Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. KATIE ELLIS Project Manager, Asia Pacific Katie facilitates all projects facing Asia Pacific. This includes creating systems for recruiting church planters, managing Asia s International Intensive, and supporting the leaders of City to City Asia. RUTH LEARY Regional Network Coordinator, EMEA Ruth supports the work of church planters in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. She helps connect church and network leaders in those regions to City to City. Born in Richmond, VA to missionary parents, Ruth spent half of her formative years in Kiev, Ukraine. Living in Eastern Europe gave Ruth a passion for connecting with people of different cultures. She loves getting to be a part of the growth of the global church. Ruth graduated from the University of Virginia where she studied Foreign Affairs and Russian and Eastern European Studies. She enjoys the mountains, exploring new places, and a good cup of coffee. Ruth lives in Washington Heights. 51 Most of her professional background is in the arts, working with and for ceramic artists in Tennessee and Maine, managing programs for an artist development organization, and her very favorite teaching pottery classes at a local high school. Katie lives in Brooklyn.

DENINE CARTER Administrative Coordinator, New York City Denine provides support for the NYC team and creates processes to make things run more smoothly. The best part of her job is getting planters the training they need to help them start Jesusloving churches that serve their communities. Denine was a hip hop dance missionary in the Dominican Republic where two seemingly unrelated things occurred: she developed a passion for church planting in urban centers, and began attending Robert Guerrero s church. After moving back to New York, she reconnected with Robert, began working as his assistant, and helped him start a church. A New York City native, Denine now lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and enjoys mentoring, storytelling podcasts, and, of course, hip hop dancing. CODY DUNN Leadership Pipeline Coordinator, New York City Cody helps execute and support CTC s training programs for leaders in New York City. He counts it a privilege to participate in the renewal of the city by helping leaders flourish in the calling God has given them. Cody grew up in rural southeastern Virginia and never thought he would call an urban center like New York home. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and comes alive when spending time in nature, even if only by taking in the view of the skyline from his fire escape. Fluent in Spanish, Cody is married to Kelsey and lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. They are both active in Cru s Millennials network and enjoy exploring New York s patchwork of neighborhoods together. 52 SARAH GROVER Coordinator, Information and Research Sarah processes all gifts to CTC, manages gift information, and oversees reporting for Advancement. While working for CTC, she is pursuing two graduate degrees: Library Science at Pratt Institute and Jewish-Christian Relations at Seton Hall University. Sarah is originally from Virginia, graduated from UVA, and lives in Brooklyn.
