Creating a Local Outreach Ministry Step 1: Course Work* Course Starting Date: March 8, 2018 Day of the Week: Every Thursday (12 week course) Time: 8:00 p.m. 9:30 p.m. (no breaks) Virtual/Online Course *This course is the first component of three training steps needed to complete the MTI Outreach Ministry Training Course. Journey with us as we work together to establish a presence of Christ s love, through you and your church, to those in your community. You will be guided along a step-by-step process of defining the heart of your ministry, growing in prayer, dreaming big, discovering God s vision, partnering with your Pastor and church, and achieving your goals in the form of lives being drawn closer to Jesus. You will not be given theory, then left to figure it out. Instead, we will explore issues and workshop ideas together as we customize your Outreach Ministry Plan. Together, we will learn how to work best in partnership with your Pastor, church leadership, and the rest of the church body in a healthy and productive way. The MTI practicum step is available to those who complete twelve weeks of course work, including the practical homework and ministry plan assignments. This opportunity will give you incredible guidance, including up to six individual one-to-one coaching sessions, as you implement all that you have learned during the course. Follow up is also provided! Course Objectives: Upon successful completion, participants should be able to: Plan and implement a strategic outreach plan in partnership with the Pastor Develop a cohesive team of leaders Create and lead an atmosphere of faith and purpose within their teams Assess successes and weakness and make the appropriate changes within their ministries All team members will learn: How to lead their team in overcoming fear Practical how to steps to launch or improve their ministry Practicalities of walking by faith, not by sight Ways to be fully prepared, yet allow the Lord room to direct His ministry Team Members: This course is designed for those desiring to follow the Lord s leading in reaching out to their communities. Current outreach leaders or anyone who wants to learn how to lead an outreach ministry for the first time are welcome! Please note: A recommendation from your Pastor is required. Prerequisite: Pastor s MTI Orientation. Virtual Meeting. Saturday, March 3, :00 am 11:00 am
Ministry Coach: Pastor Ryan Gray For the past sixteen years, Ryan has followed the Lord s leading across the country and around the globe working for non-profits, NGOs, churches and mission s organizations. He has ministered to AIDS victims in South Africa, preached the Gospel across Latin America, and led short-term outreach teams into Africa. Additionally, he co-created and managed four separate mentoring programs for at-risk youth. Since 2013, Ryan has assisted in a ministry partnership with the vision to see Christian technology workers within the Silicon Valley turning their jobs into a mission field. Ryan has personally mentored more than fifty individuals over the past decade and trained more than 500 adult mentors to bring hope to those in need. Weekly Training Time Schedule Total Length: 1.5 hours 8:00-8:10 p.m. Welcome & Prayer 8:10-8:30 p.m. Spiritual Development: Devotional Sharing and Accountability 8:30-9:15 p.m. Training: Weekly Topic & Discussion 9:15-9:30 p.m. Homework Discussion Required Material Computer or similar electronic device with Internet access Access to Google documents (you will not need a Google account) account Notebook/Journal Course Reading Material Bible (New International Version & New American Standard versions used by Coach) Coursework: Weekly Syllabus Part 1: Weeks 1-4 Theory: The Heart of a Minister Week Topic Description 1 Building on a Foundation of Love: Destroying All Our Fears 2 The Fight of Your Life: Fighting for Souls 3 Identifying Who Jesus Would Reach Out To 4 Where Do We Start and How Do I Choose? Are we afraid of what people may say, think or do? This means we need to dig deeper into God s love with the boldness that His love knows no limits! Reading: 1 John 4:18-19 Do we believe that there will be evil forces and spirits that will try to hinder us where we are tasked with going? If so, how do we bind them, as Jesus said, and what can we expect? Reading: Mark 3:27 and Matthew 12:29 Is there anything specific about the type of people Jesus reached and the reason He spent time with them? If so, how does that help us decide who to focus on reaching? Reading: Matthew 25:31-46 When there are so many hurting and lost people in the world, how do we choose which individuals the Lord Jesus has called us to help? What is a Person of Peace and who is it? Is there a strategy Jesus employed to reach an un-reached community? Reading: Luke 10:1-13
Part 2: Weeks 5-12 Logistics: Practical Aspect of Ministry/Establishing the Vision and Mission Week Topic Description 5 Prayer: Beginning with God s Guidance Every great mission in the Bible is God s vision for us. It was not just a good idea, but the right idea. Reading: Exodus 2:11-12, 3:1-17 (Moses tries to take things into his own hands, and it does not go well.) Acts 13:1-4 (Paul and Barnabas were sent by the Holy Spirit through prayer and fasting with elders and leaders.) Luke 24: Partnering with Senior Leadership Favor flows through leadership. Honoring and working under your leadership s umbrella. Reading: Luke 17:11-14 and 1 Samuel 26: Get to Know Your Culture The most effective outreach for the Gospel requires that we earn the right to speak into lives. This begins by first understanding who they are and where they come from: Who am I serving? What makes them distinct? What is the cultural context of the group I am serving? 8 Specifying the Vision and Mission Clarity of Vision and Mission is vital. What is a Vision? What is a Mission? Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:20-23 ( To the Jew I became a Jew, to the weak, I became weak. Paul understood those he shared with and became their friends.) What is the difference between the two? This will be a workshop to help each other dig deeper into our intended outreach goals and mode of operation in reaching those goals. 9 Empowering a Passionate TEAM! Planning for Your Successor This is an Outreach Team not Spiritual Rambo vs. the World. PART 1 Who is my current team? Have I prayed for the right people? How should I recruit? Who have I asked to join? Who am I asking to join for the future? PART 2 Making room for my Successor(s) Asking God to provide Calling out gifting's in your Successor(s) Reading: Matthew 10: Nuts and Bolts: Part 1 - Budgeting 11 Nuts and Bolts: Part 2 - Calendar of Events Budgeting Workshop: Working together to finish the nuts and bolts of your ministry plan Time/schedule Volunteers needed Estimated financial needs, etc. Knowing your church s regular weekly happenings, plus monthly and annual events. Establishing a group calendar that all youth, ministry leaders and church leadership can access and review up-to-the-minute changes. 12 Launch Plan! How are you announcing your vision and mission to the church and community surrounding the church? How are you promoting your first week/month?

Attendance Policy Each team member (student) is expected to faithfully participate in each weekly session, as well as complete the weekly assignments. Full participation is vitally important. Trainings will be recorded and available for students to review as needed. One absence will be excused. More than two absences will disqualify the team member from proceeding to the next step and require them to redo the course the next time it is offered. 5 Week Topic Homework Assignment 1 Building on a Foundation of Love: Destroying All Our Fears Love two people that you do not know with your actions. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to specific people. Pray for each person or just listen to them. Share the Gospel if the opportunity presents itself. Examples: Visit someone who is lonely (e.g. a widow), offer to help someone carry groceries to their car, take a homeless person to lunch Write a two paragraph description of the results. Describe why they needed love, how you felt before you loved them, and how you felt after. 2 The Fight of Your Life: Fighting for Souls Interview a missionary, founder or co-founder of a city mission s project or a church planter. Ask them about their experiences in feeling spiritual resistance. How did they overcome those challenges and what advice can they give? (If you do not know anyone or can t find someone to interview, you will be connected with someone.) 3 Identifying Who Jesus Would Reach Out To 4 Where Do We Start and How Do I Choose? Challenge! Ask your spouse, family members and/or friends to help you minister to at least three of the following characteristics of those whom Jesus referred to in Matthew 25: 31-46: Hungry, thirsty, stranger coming over, clothing the poor, caring for the sick, and loving the prisoner. Interview an experienced outreach minister, missionary or church planter. Ask them about their experiences in reaching out to new communities and if they had a key person who let them in to the community. Solicit their advice using at least five written questions to help you understand their successes and failures. Submit a copy of the answers to the ministry coach. (If you do not know one or can t find someone to interview, you will be connected with someone.) 5 Prayer: Beginning with God s Guidance Spend time in prayer every day, alone with God. Schedule a prayer meeting with your church prayer team/leaders and others who can help. (This meeting can be via phone or online video streaming if necessary.) Submit a summary of what you feel God is guiding you towards and is saying to you (one page minimum). 6 Partnering with Senior Leadership Read the following passages and write 2-3 things the Holy Spirit highlighted to you from each of the following passages: Luke 17:11-14 (Ten lepers Jesus sent to the Temple) 1 Samuel 26:8-11 (David honored Saul to the end) Schedule a time to meet with your Pastor and discuss your church's long-term goals and your Pastor s heart for the church. What are his thoughts on your outreach? Submit a summary of your findings.
Week Topic Homework Assignment 7 Get to Know Your Culture Have two conversations with at least two separate individuals representative of the group you are serving. Ask them to educate you about their culture. Focus on benefits, hardships, things they are culturally proud of and not so proud of, etc. Write down all that you learn. Be as specific and detailed as possible. (Submit one page minimum ) Examples: Urban, rural Afro-American, Caucasian, Asian, Latino First or second-generation immigrants Athletes, academics Elderly, youth Young married couples, young families, youth without Christian parents 8 Specifying the Vision and Mission Schedule a meeting with your Pastor and any other appropriate leaders to approve your ministry s vision and plan. Write and submit your Outreach Vision and Mission statement. By the end of the 12-week course work, your Outreach Ministry Plan should be approved by your church s Senior Leadership. 9 Empowering a Passionate TEAM! Planning for Your Successor 10 Nuts and Bolts: Part 1 - Budgeting Matthew 10:1-5 ~ Jesus Dirty Dozen Submit a report on your current ministry team s dynamic. Meet with your church s administrative or senior leadership for suggestions and approval. If this is not possible, find another trusted leader with an administration gifting to advise you. Gather what you can regarding your financial budget, what you have, what you need, what you don t have, etc. Bring all of this information to the next training. 11 Nuts and Bolts: Part 2 - Calendar of Events Meet with your Pastor/leadership to obtain approval of one full calendar year of events (signed off by Church Administrator/Pastor). 12 Launch Plan! List your marketing plan including at least three types of announcements (e.g. Online, Paper Flyer/Poster, Word of Mouth). Obtain signed approval from your church s Senior Leadership.
