January, February 2018 Volume 12 #13 Dear St. Gall Family, In trying to express the mission of our wonderful parish I came up with the following motto: GLORIFY God. GROW in holiness. GIVE Jesus to others. As pastor, these are the things that I want to be the focus of our parish. We seek to glorify God by the way that we worship God the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit every Sunday at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We do not go to Mass in order to be entertained. The Mass is our way of reverently worshipping God because it is right and just to give praise to the source of all our blessings. While the Mass is more about what we give to God rather than what we get out of it, we do hope that the Mass at St. Gall also nourishes, inspires, and strengthens us. We also give glory to God by the way that we serve our neighbor in love. We seek to grow in holiness through prayer, reception of the sacraments, and ongoing faith formation. This is all part of being disciples of Jesus Christ within our wonderful Catholic tradition. We have many opportunities to do this at St. Gall whether it is through our daily confession schedule, weekly day of Eucharistic adoration, Saturday morning men s group, weekly Bible studies, or faith formation programs. We are all imperfect sinners. However, with the help of God s grace and the support of the community, we are trying to all become the saints that God has called us to be through baptism. That is the key to happiness! Finally, we strive to give Jesus to others. Once we are transformed through a deepening in our own relationship with Christ we need to share Christ with others. This is the simple method of evangelization (spreading the Good News): deepen your personal knowledge of Jesus, introduce him to others, and invite them to experience him in the life of the local Catholic community. Pope Francis explained the motivation behind evangelization beautifully: The primary reason for evangelizing is the love of Jesus which we have received, the experience of salvation which urges us to ever greater love of him. What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known? If we do not feel an intense desire to share this love, we need to pray insistently that he will once more touch our hearts (Evangelii Gaudium, 264). With this goal of evangelization in mind we are posing two challenge questions to the parishioners of St. Gall in Who do you say that Jesus is? (see Mark 8:29.) How does St. Gall Parish help you to answer that question? Beginning in January we will be encouraging you to reflect on your answer to these questions, write them down, and possibly be willing to video record your answers. We will use some of the written answers and video recordings on our parish website and social media sites as a way to evangelize. May the Lord bless you abundantly in 2018! Fr. DiTomo, Pastor

2017 St. Gall Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Annual Report Who We Are In the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually through person-to-person service to those in need and suffering. Your St. Gall Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is one of 4,400 conferences in the U.S. and 44,600 conferences in 150 countries worldwide. What We Do The members of our local conference donate their time and talent in fund raising events like Donut Sundays, St. Nicholas Breakfast and a Walk for the Poor. Then they visit individuals or families in need in the greater Elburn area to help determine their needs and how we can best assist them. Once per month, members also assist at the Elburn Countryside Food Pantry by picking up food at Jewel and delivering it to the pantry. Your food donations left at our church are also taken to the pantry. In 2017, Vincentians also raked leaves and helped load a UHaul to help a family move at no cost. What We Accomplished This Past Year During the fiscal year ending September 30th, 2017, the 21 men and women that make up the St. Gall Conference made 12 home visits to the needy, helping a total of 34 people; helped them by paying Com Ed, Nicor and Village of Elburn utility bills, and rent payments. None of this would be possible without the generous financial support of our St Gall parishioners. Thanks to you! Here is a summary of the 2017 Annual Report for SVdP: Fiscal Year 2017 Profit & Loss Statement Receipts Expenses Donations from Members $ 446 Assistance to Needy $ 7,994 Donations from Parish Collections $ 6,663 Dues $ 130 Donut Sundays $ 1,729 Operating Expenses $ 323 Friends of the Poor Walk $ 450 St Nicholas Breakfast $ 171 Other Income $ 3,105 TOTAL INCOME $12,564 TOTAL EXPENSES $ 8,447 Cash Flow Cash on Hand at Beginning of Fiscal Year $ 8,629 Receipts $12,564 Expenses ($ 8,447) Cash on Hand at End of Fiscal Year $ 12,746 How You Can Help You can help those in need in the local Elburn area by joining the St. Vincent de Paul Society and providing financial, physical and spiritual assistance to those in need, contributing financially to SVdP through your Sunday collection envelope, attending a Donut Sunday event and making a contribution for your donut, coffee, juice and fruit or contributing to any of our local walkers during the Friends of the Poor Walk each autumn. If you know someone in need of help, please have them call the parish office at during normal office hours or leave a message on our parish web site at stgall.com/svdp and select Request Assistance Electronically. We will get back with them ASAP and schedule a home visit to determine how we can help. All communication with the SVdP society is strictly confidential.

January-respect life month During January, the Church sets aside the entire month for Respect Life. From the time of conception until natural death we recognize we are all made in the image and likeness of God and all life is sacred. We, as Catholics, have the responsibility to show respect for life not only through prayer but also through our actions. St. Gall Respect Life Team has much going on during January and we cordially invite you to attend/participate in any (or all) of the events listed: 1) The first Saturday of every month we will be attending the Planned Parenthood Facility in Aurora to pray quietly and peacefully for those entering the facility seeking an abortion, and for the medical staff to have a conscience change of heart. For those wishing to carpool, we will leave St. Gall parking lot at 9:15 AM. The prayer vigil is from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM. 2) MARCH FOR LIFE in Chicago on Sunday, January 14th from 2:00-4:00 PM. We will take the commuter train at 12:25 PM at the Elburn Station and catch the returning train at 4:25 PM. If you haven t attended this annual event, you are missing an astounding experience. Especially seeing all the young people attending; the guest speakers and walking down the streets of Chicago to the Federal Building. We encourage our teens from St. Gall s to join us as well. 3) 9 Days for Life begins Jan This is a digital pilgrimage of prayer and action focused on cherishing the gift of every person s life. Go to: for daily reflections, suggested actions and multi-faceted novena. PRAYER, PENANCE, PILGRIMAGE! 4) Baby Bottle Campaign and Tiny Soles Display will be set up the weekend of Jan 20/21. We encourage you to take a baby bottle and fill it with loose change, cash, or write a check to TLC Pregnancy Center. We ask that ALL bottles be returned the weekend of Feb. 3/4 (FILLED OR EMPTY) as they travel to other parishes to help fund other Life Centers in our area. The Tiny Soles baby booties display represents the tiny feet of an aborted child that will never have the chance to walk, talk, laugh or live to be the special Child that God created because of the Roe vs. Wade decision to legalize abortion in If you like to knit or croquet we need more booties for our display. Drop them off in the parish office before January 18th. Thank you! 5) Attend the Monday evening Mass on January 22, at 7:30 PM (anniversary date of Rowe vs. Wade) as Fr. DiTomo celebrates Give Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life. Lonely and frightened at just 16, not knowing what to do. Afraid to tell just anyone, now Lord what should she do? This old world can seem cold and dark, when friends turn away She needs someone to hold her hand, someplace where she can stay So let me be that one someone dear Lord, and let her hear me say, I m here, I care, hold on my dear. Oh Lord, it s time to pray... For in order to save the baby Lord, the mother we cannot fail

ASH WEDNESDAY Wed., February 14, 2018 Mass will be as follows: 7:00 AM 12:10 PM 7 :30 PM Ashes will also be distributed during Faith Formation Classes at 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM ABSTINENCE AND FASTING Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church. Similarly, the 150 Hail Marys that were recited for the rosary were an adaptation of the medieval monastic practice of reciting the 150 psalms in the Psalter Lenten Prayers Our Father... MARY, Mother of Jesus, you were Jesus' gift for us from the Cross. He gave you to us as our mother. Intercede for all our needs. Hail Mary... Glory Be... Come Gracious Spirit, Heavenly Dove, With light and comfort from above. Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide, Stay close by every child's side. Amen! Lord, I know how much you love me. It s hard for me to feel it sometimes, but I know your love is always with me. Help me to use your love as a way to persevere in my Lenten intentions. I am weak, but I know with your help, I can use these small sacrifices in my life to draw closer to you. LENT A TIME FOR PRAYER, FASTING Please join us every Friday during Lent for the Stations of the Cross at 6:00 PM. & ALMSGIVING

Giggles and Smiles to you all! The Secret Burden A much loved-minister of God once carried a secret burden of long- past sin deep in his heart. He had committed the sin many years before, during his Bible school training. No one knew what he had done, but they did know he had repented. Even so, he had suffered years of remorse over the incident without any sense of God's forgiveness. A woman in his church deeply loved God and claimed to have visions in which Jesus spoke to her. The minister, skeptical of her claims, asked her, "The next time you speak to the Lord, would you please ask Him what sin your minister committed while he was in Bible school." The woman kindly agreed. When she came to the church a few days later the minister asked, "Did He visit you?" She said, "Yes." "And did you ask Him what sin I committed?" "Yes, I asked Him," she replied "Well, what did He say?" "He said, 'I don't remember. Ah, come on and smile! What Do Snowmen Call Their Offspring? Chill-dren What Do You Call An Old Snowman? Water. What s it called when a snowman has a temper tantrum? A meltdown. How do you scare a snowman? Pull out a hairdryer. How was the snow globe feeling after the scary story? A little shaken. How does a penguin build a house? Igloos it together
