7 Installation Participants I am deeply honored and grateful to have so many of my esteemed colleagues and friends participating in worship this afternoon. The following is context information for each of them, listed in order of appearance in the service (PCC Presbyterian Church in Chinatown, and an asterisk indicates their participation in the official commission of the Presbytery for the installation). Mildred Hall, PCC member, is our organist this afternoon. Thank you for sharing your musical gifts with us! The PCC Choir led by Norma Fong Chan, is made up of enthusiastic vocalists from PCC. Thank you for preparing such lively music for us this afternoon! Laurene Chan is a PCC elder and the Director of Youth Ministries for Cameron House. I am grateful for her support and partnership in ministry. Edward Kim is a PCC elder and chaired the Pastor Nominating Committee. Ed logged in a lot of hours working on the search process and I remain grateful to the entire PNC for their support. Rev. David Pan is the pastor for the Mandarin worshipping community of PCC. I have enjoyed getting to know Pastor Pan through our regular staff meetings and look forward to being in ministry together. Victor Floyd is a graduate of the Pacific School of Religion (GTU) and is in the ordination process with the UCC. He is an accomplished musician and was our Minister of Music at College Heights Church. I am delighted he is able to be with us today. Li-Oil Long is and elder in the Cantonese worshipping community of PCC. She has faithfully taken on extra responsibilities while the Cantonese community is searching for a pastor. I have enjoyed getting to know her though our weekly pastor s meetings. Monica Walters is the new Director of Cameron House (the local Chinatown community center with a long connectional history with PCC). She was formerly adjunct faculty at Whitworth College in Spokane, WA and we are so glad she is now here in Chinatown! *Grace Schulz is an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Carlos. Grace and her husband Andrew were long time, faithful youth leaders in our Senior High program. It is wonderful to have their family with us today! Virstan Choy grew up at PCC and is an alumni of the Cameron House programs. He has been a trusted mentor of mine for many years, from his time serving as faculty at San Francisco Theological Seminary as well as former General Presbyter for San Francisco Presbytery. I am honored that Rev. Choy is able to preach for us today. *Linda Lee is an active elder at PCC and the current moderator of San Francisco Presbytery. It is the moderator s job to preside over the installation process and it especially meaningful that Linda is the one to play that role today.

8 Jonelyn Kitajima Langenstein is one of the Trinity Girls (a group of young adult women who have met together since their days in our youth program at Trinity Pres). She has her masters in opera performance from New England Conservatory in Boston and it is a treat to have her singing with us today. *Rev Jeffrey Gaines is the pastor of Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. Jeff teaches with the Spiritual Direction program at SFTS and has been my spiritual director for many years. I am delighted he can be here today. Colleen Nakomoto is a professional dancer who also dances with InterPlay, an improvisational artistic community. Colleen will be dancing with symbols that represent the joining of our two ministries red representing the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown and purple representing the ministry of Rev Kimberly Elliot. I am grateful for her deep creativity. *Rev. Calvin Chinn is currently the temporary Executive Presbyter for San Francisco Presbytery. Rev. Chinn served the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown faithfully for seventeen years as the former installed pastor. I am deeply honored and humbled to be following such an esteemed colleague in ministry. *Rev. Carrie Buckner is the Director of Chaplaincy services at Alta Bates Medical Center. We have served in Presbytery together in a variety of different ways and she is a dear friend and colleague. I am grateful for her presence here today. Rev David Mote, the former interim pastor at PCC, regrets that he cannot be with us today. He has accepted a temporary position in South Carolina, but sends his love and well wishes to everyone. Taiko Drumming Group Our group is called Heiwa (Hay-Wah) Heiwa means Peace in Japanese. We are a group of older women, grandmas, all retired, who love to play Taiko. Originally, only men were allowed to play taiko. In the US, the majority of players are younger men and women, which makes our group unique, our average age is 70 and our oldest player is 85. We play on 19" drums which we personally make out of wine barrels and cow hide. Here is a description of how Taiko drums were used in ancient villages, taken from the drumming group Kudo : In ancient Japan, the boundaries of a village were not visual (signposts, markers, fences, etc) but aural: drum was at the center of the village and boundaries determined by how far its sound traveled when it was beaten: you were a member of the village if you could hear its announcement or alarm. As the group Kudo travels around the world and beats its drums, it asks the question, Can you hear our drums? If so we must be members of the same village. As we hear the sound of the drums today, may we remember that we are members of one village/ one body in Christ, and celebrate our unity with joy!
