1 First Family News October/ November 2017 October/ November 2017 Volume 5, Issue 5 From the Pastor s Desk Journey to Tomorrow Our Next Steps! These are exciting days at First Baptist Church of Oak Island as the Lord continues to bless us with His good favor. He has blessed us with a continuous flow of new members and given us a firm financial foundation. I believe He is now leading us to accomplish our Long- Range Plan of renewing and adding to church facilities. It is for that purpose we are entering into a capital fundraising campaign. Our campaign theme is Journey to Tomorrow Our Next Steps! Our theme verse is Judges 18:6 which states Your journey has the Lord s approval. In the course of this campaign we will strive to obtain pledges that will amount to 1.5 million dollars. That is indeed a God sized task, but I believe that together we can accomplish all the Lord calls us to do. We will receive these pledges at a fundraising banquet on Sunday, January 20, 2018 at 5:30 pm. The banquet will be held at the North Carolina Baptist Assemble at Fort Caswell. Please, save that date and begin praying now asking the Lord to show you your part of this important work. The funds raised during this campaign will enable us to renovate/ update the sanctuary building and add an architectural feature that will expand our welcome and gathering area. We will also build a new two-story education building that will house children s classrooms downstairs and adult classrooms upstairs. Our desire is also to make the entire campus accessible to everyone so there will be a much-needed elevator in the new building. The project will also tie all of our buildings together so you can move from one building to the other without going outside. You will be hearing more about the campaign in the coming weeks from the Capital Fundraising Team and myself. I am excited the Lord is leading us on this Journey to Tomorrow and I hope you will take the Next Step with us. Always remember, the Lord loves you and so does your pastor. With great anticipation, Pastor Charlie PIER WORSHIP Our Sunday morning worship services on Ocean Crest Pier will end for the season the last Sunday of October. This has been a great season and the Lord has blessed us with the highest attendance numbers in the 13 years we have been holding these services. We deeply appreciate the owners and managers of the Pier for allowing us to have this service each week. We also have a great team of folks who work hard to make these services possible. Our set up crew is there every week setting up chairs and the sound system. Thanks to Lesley and Joann Williford, Wayne and Linda Coble, Ken Palmeter, and Randy Martin for their tireless efforts. We also have a great Praise and Worship Team that works hard to provide the music for the service. Thanks to Joan Carter, Megan and Chris Parrish, David Lloyd and Chris Hood for the hours of rehearsals and for leading the services. We praise the Lord for the lives He has touched through these services and we look forward to next season with great expectations.

2 The annual meeting of the Brunswick Baptist Association will be Friday, October 27. The meeting will be held at Jennies Branch Baptist Church. Registration begins at 8:00 am. This is going to be an exciting meeting as we hear of all the ministries our Association has accomplished over the last year and as we look forward to the year ahead. As a part of this meeting we will hear from Brandon Allison on the progress of the church plant in Saugus, Mass. and how we might help with the work there. We will also hear from Shem Okello in Kenya about the work needed to update and maintain the facilities of the Kenya Baptist Theological College in Kisumu. We are allotted three messengers and the pastor. Would you like to be a messenger to this meeting? Let the pastor know so you can be voted on at the Quarterly Church Conference on October 18. The meeting is also open to all church members if you are interested in going to hear all the exciting things the Lord is doing through Brunswick Baptist churches. Our church is responsible for the worship services at Ocean Trail Nursing Center each Sunday in the month of November. For this service, we need someone to present the devotion/message; a music leader; pianist, and helpers. The dear residents of this facility love to sing and hear the Word of the Lord. These services are always a blessing to them and the individuals leading. Will you be a part? Please see the sign-up sheet in the hallway outside the sanctuary for details and to get involved. EVANGELISM CONFERENCE Our Evangelism Committee will host a one day Fishers of Men Evangelism Conference on Sunday, November 5, Rev. Marty Dupree will be our guest speaker for this event. During the Sunday School hour, all our youth and adult classes are invited to meet in the sanctuary for the first session, Life Style Evangelism Being an On-Mission Christian. Then in our 11:00 am worship service the second session will cover Conversation Evangelism: Sharing the Gospel in a Changing Culture. Following the service, we will enjoy lunch in the Fellowship Hall and then come back into the sanctuary at 1:30 pm for an Interactive Training Session. Mark your calendars now for this exciting event that will help us be Fishers of Men. Pastor Charlie will be out of the community November 6-8 to attend the Baptist State Convention in Winston Salem. Please be in prayer for travel mercies and for the Convention itself. On Sunday, November 19 th our guest speaker in the morning worship service will be Brenda Gray from the North Carolina Baptist Homes. Brenda will be bringing with her some of the young people currently residing at the Homes. They will update us on the ministries of the Homes and share some personal testimonies. This service is always a blessing so I hope you will be in attendance. Brenda always brings a high level of excitement about the ministry and the children will bless your heart. We will take a special offering that morning for the ministries of the Homes.

3 BBA TOY STORE It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Once again, we will be serving as a host site for the Brunswick Baptist Association Toy Store Not only do we help to brighten the holiday for children, we are able to share the plan of salvation in Christ with families in our community! What better gift could there be?! Everyone in our church can be involved in this outreach. You can: Pray for open hearts of the families to be served, the many volunteers needed, & how God can use YOU Form a team to be a part of the Toy Store Golf Tournament Saturday, November 4 or volunteer to help at the Tournament Donate funds or new toys (a list of needed toys will be provided) or sponsor a hole at the golf tournament Shop for toys before and during the store Help sort and price toys before & during the store, set up for the store Prepare and/or help serve snacks and meals for workers Volunteer to be a greeter, check in parents, help parents shop, be a cashier, serve as a counselor Volunteer training (new and returning) will be 7:00 pm Thursday, November 9 th at our church. Set-up will be Thursday, December 7 th. The Toy Store will be 9 am- 9 pm Friday, December 8 th, and 9 am- 3 pm Saturday, December 9 th. Have questions? Ready to volunteer? See Kathy Holbrook or Joan Carter. It s a wonderful time to be a child of God at First Baptist Church of Oak Island! We had a wonderful summer learning together and growing in stature, in number, in fellowship and in our faith. Now that school has begun again, all of our children s ministries are back in session as well. Please make sure to invite any children you know to attend each of the following: Sunday: 9:45- Sunday School 11:00 Worship and Church 6:00- TeamKID Monday: 4:00- After School Music Club Wednesday: 6:00- Family Meal 6:30- Choir (Ages 4-1 st grade) Bible Drill (2 nd -5 th grades) 7:00- Mission Friends (Ages 3-Kindergarten) Girls in Action (Girls 2 nd -5 th Grades) Royal Ambassadors (Boys 2 nd -5 th Grades) We are looking forward to adventuring together and seeing some of the amazing things our amazing God created. Please make plans now for our trip to Indigo Farms on October 14. We will go on a hayride, see the animals and pick a pumpkin. We will leave the church at 12:00 and return at 5:00. We are also looking forward to attending the Cape Fear Kite Festival in Fort Fisher on November 4. We will leave the church at 10:00 and return by 3:30. As always, all of God s children are welcome during Ministry events, and we would love for any member interested to join us. Please RSVP to Beth Key at if you are planning on attending. Everyone working with Children & Youth in any capacity is required to have a Background Check. Leaders and Dept. Heads, it is your responsibility to assure they do prior to serving. See Michelle in the office for more information. First, thank you to everyone who brought backpacks and food items for the Mary Greene Mission Group s Matthew s Ministry project. Thank you also for your gifts to the State Missions offering. Fall has arrived and our mission groups are back in full swing. In October, our GA s plan to serve at the Food Pantry in Boiling Spring Lakes. Several WMU ladies are attending Carolina Women, a state WMU conference October 6-7. WMU of North Carolina s Red Box Ministry provides Christmas boxes for women in state correctional facilities. The Lena Early Mission group is helping the association collect Chapstick for the boxes. If you would like to help, tubes need to be brought to church by Wednesday, October 25. (Please be sure they are individually sealed.) It s Operation Christmas Child time again! The Mission Action Group will take the lead with this project. They will provide shoeboxes for your use or you may purchase you own. Collection dates are October 29 through November 12. New this year NO CANDY OR TOOTHPASTE in boxes. The Piecemakers group is having a sewing day with the Youth on Friday, November 10. Youth, make plans to be there. From Mission Friends to GA s to adult groups, there is a place for you to learn that Missions: It s not just a project it s a way of life. Joan Carter, WMU Director If you are a ministry leader or Committee Chair and use the FBCOI credit cards or seek reimbursement for purchases, please submit receipts to the Church Office in a timely mannerpreferably within the month that the purchase was made. If you are planning to return any items purchased with one of the credit cards for refund, please do it within the same month of the purchase, whenever possible. Your diligence in making the behind the scenes work go smoothly is deeply appreciated.

5 Trunks of Treats Make plans to join us Tuesday, October 31 from 6-7:00. Decorate your car and hand out treats to the family s in our community. Then, invite them to join us in the Fellowship Hall for carnival games. Sign up on the Welcome Center bulletin board. Contributions of candy can be dropped off in the box in Welcome Center. We are also accepting money to purchase candy; please write Trunks of Treats in the memo line of checks Evangelism Committee On August 5 th, we had a wonderful time on the beach with FBCOI family, friends and beach visitors. Pastor Charlie made a detailed sand sculpture that was admired by all. While we played games and shared watermelon we had great conversation. We shared information about FBCOI and gospel tracts as well. Next summer we plan to merge this activity with the Son Drenched ministry. Make plans now to join us! The committee has met and scheduled a variety of activities for the coming year. These activities need the support of people with varied talents. We read in Ephesians 4:16, He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. Please be in prayer as to how you can be personally involved in these activities to spread the love of Christ. Speaking of prayer, did you get a prayer calendar for the month of October? This calendar suggests prayer for specific areas of evangelism. Stop at the Welcome Desk to pick one up, if you didn t get a calendar. Attention! November 5 th, we will have a one-day evangelism conference with Rev. Marty Dupree here as our guest speaker. There will be 3 sessions: 9:45 am - Life Style Evangelism: Being an On-Mission Christian 11:45 am - Conversation Evangelism: Sharing the Gospel in a Changing Culture 1:30 pm - Interactive Training Lunch will be provided at 12:00.
