Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us for our Palm Sunday worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Hymn of the Day which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn A. Lucas... Associate Pastor Rev. 2 Order of Worship Palm Sunday Sunday, March 20, :00 & 10:45 a.m. PRE RELUDE CHRIS ROGERS OGERS, ORGANIST WELCOME LITURGY OF THE PALMS Pastor: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Pastor: Hosanna to the King of Israel! Hosanna in the highest! Pastor: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Women: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Pastor: Behold, your King comes to you, O Zion. Men: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Pastor: He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea. Pastor: Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Pastor: Brothers and Sisters in Christ, during Lent we have prepared in quiet worship and devotion for the celebration of our Lord s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with the whole Church throughout the world. Christ enters His own city to complete His work as our Savior: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with Him by faith in love, so that, united with Him in His sufferings, we may share in His risen life. Worshippers are invited to hold up the palms they received upon entering the church. 2

Pastor: Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die, let these palms be for us signs of victory and majesty. Grant that all of us who bear them in the name of Jesus hail Him as our King, and follow Him always in the way that leads to eternal life through Him who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. KIDS OF THE KINGDOM 10:45 a.m. Shout Hosanna by Vicki Hancock READING JOHN 12: The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him. Lector: See, our King comes to us! Hosanna in the highest! HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor All glory, laud, and honor To You, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. You are the King of Israel And David s royal Son, Now in the Lord s name coming, Our King and Blessèd One. 3

The company of angels Is praising You on high, And we with all creation In chorus make reply. The multitude of pilgrims With palms before You went; Our praise and prayer and anthems Before You we present. To You before Your passion They sang their hymns of praise; To You, now high exalted, Our melody we raise. As You received their praises, Accept the prayers we bring, O Source of ev ry blessing, Our good and gracious King. Text: Theodulf of Orléans, c ; tr. John Mason Neale, , alt. Tune: Melchior Teschner, , alt.; setting: Lutheran Book of Worship: Select Hymns, 1985 LSB 442 Used by Permission. LSBHymnLicense.net # THE OLD TESTAMENT READING DEUTERONOMY 32: The LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone and there is none remaining, bond or free. Then he will say, Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge, who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection! See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 4

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL We stand for the Holy Gospel: Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, chapter twelve. OHN 12:20-43 JOHN THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven: I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. So the crowd answered him, We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? So Jesus said to them, The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. 5

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE Prayer & member/guest cards are collected during the singing of the following hymn: SERMON HYMN Ride On, Ride On in Majesty Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark! All the tribes hosanna cry. O Savior meek, pursue Thy road, With palms and scattered garments strowed. Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin O er captive death and conquered sin. Ride on, ride on in majesty! The angel armies of the sky Look down with sad and wond ring eyes To see the_approaching sacrifice. 6

Ride on, ride on in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh. The Father on His sapphire throne Awaits His own anointed Son. Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain, Then take, O God, Thy pow r and reign. Text: Henry H. Milman, , alt. Text & Music: Public Domain Tune: Musicalisch Hand-Buch der Geistlichen Melodien, Hamburg, 1690, alt.; setting: William H. Monk, , alt. LSB 441 Used by Permission. LSBHymnLicense.net # THE SERMON REV EV. TOM ROGERS THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father, and He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING 8:00 a.m. Benedictus Benedictus Brian Lewis CHAPEL CHOIR Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 7

LITANY Pastor: O Lord, All; have mercy. Pastor: O Christ, have mercy. Pastor: O Lord, have mercy. Pastor: From all sin, from all error, from all evil, from the crafts and assaults of the devil; good Lord, deliver us. Pastor: In all time of tribulation; in all time of our prosperity; in the hour of death; and in the day of judgment, All; help us, good Lord. Pastor: To raise those who fall and to strengthen those who stand; and to comfort and help the weak-hearted and the distressed: We implore You to hear us, good Lord. Pastor: To strengthen and keep all sick persons and young children; to free those in bondage; and to have mercy on us all: We implore You to hear us, good Lord. Pastor: For forgiveness for the many times we have denied Jesus, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For grace to seek out those habits of sin which mean spiritual death, and by prayer, self-discipline, and the Holy Spirit, to overcome them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For Christian people, that through the suffering of disunity there may grow a rich union in Christ, let us pray to the Lord. l: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For those who make laws, interpret them, and administer them, that our common life may be ordered in justice and mercy, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For those in the darkness and agony of isolation, that they may find support and encouragement, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For all who are in trouble, want, sickness, or any adversity, (especially...) Lord, have mercy. 8

Pastor: For those who are tempted to give up the way of the cross; and finally, that we, with those who have died in faith, may find mercy in the day of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Amen. REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION: As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this Holy Supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: We ought to examine ourselves before we eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe that your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you his own body and blood in the Sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Is it your sincere intention to do better in living a Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strengthening from Jesus. NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. HOLY COMMUNION Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose, there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 9

People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow r and might: Heav n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Pastor: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts that He may establish in us a living faith and prepare us joyfully to remember our Redeemer and receive Him who comes to us in His body and blood. We pray together the prayer He taught us: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And also with you. AGNUS DEI Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; Grant us peace, grant us peace. 10
