INVOCATION In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, 2

3 we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, Who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Almighty God, You know that we are surrounded by forces that threaten us, and that we are too weak to deal with them on our own. Protect us from illness and accident and calamity, so they may not disable us. Grant us Your strength in times of temptation and testing, so they may not cause us to fail or to fall. We ask this in the Name of Him who overcame on our behalf, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING DEUTERONOMY 18:15-20 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers it is to him you shall listen just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die. And the LORD said to me, They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING 1 CORINTHIANS 8:1-13 Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. This knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one. For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth as indeed there are many gods and many lords yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. And he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. 6 THE SERMON THE EATING PROBLEM REV. PAUL DOELLINGER TEXT: ISAIAH 58:6-7, 10 Our Worship Leader and Preacher for this weekend is Pastor Paul Doellinger from Monmouth, Oregon. He is representing the charity he serves in his retirement, Food for the Poor. Pastor Doellinger will also be giving us a video presentation during the Adult Bible Class on the ministry of Food for the Poor, which serves the poorest of the poor in 17 Central American and Caribbean countries. Pastor Doellinger is also the Circuit Counselor (Visitor) of our Circuit. THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father, and He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. After each petition the prayer concludes: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We look now with joy to our Holy Communion at the Table of our Lord, rejoicing that He comes to us to bless us in this Sacrament of His Presence. Amen. REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION: As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this Holy Supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: We ought to examine ourselves before we eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe that your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you his own body and blood in the Sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Is 6

7 it your sincere intention to do better in living a Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strengthening from Jesus. NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. HOLY COMMUNION Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, and now we praise You that You sent us Your only-begotten Son and that in Him, being found in fashion as a man, You manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow r and might: Heav n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS A Time to Serve Jesus hears His children crying, Sees them hungry, lost, and dying; Who will comfort all their sorrows? Who will brighten their tomorrows? Jesus pleads with us to reach them With our gifts of love, and teach them That the kindness we are giving Is the Christian s way of living. Young and old alike He s calling, Human grief is so appalling; Since He gave His life to save us, Let us share the lives He gave us. When we join our Savior s service, He will strengthen and preserve us; He will guide our daily living, And He ll bless the love we re giving.
