If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. 3 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Beloved, Jesus said, I will be with you always. Let us take Him at His word and come into His presence, sharing our great need of Him as we confess our sins and ask for forgiveness. I confess to almighty God all my sins with which I have offended You, especially the sin of trying to go it alone without You. On my own, I am weak, and sin so easily which makes me forget Your Word and will for my life. I have sinned in many ways by evil thoughts, words, and deeds. Because of Your merciful death on the cross and in the power of Your resurrection from the dead, let me hear from You the words of Your grace and forgiveness and new life. Amen. Pastor: In keeping with His promise, the Lord sends another helper to deliver His own words of forgiveness. 4 THE FIRST READING ACTS 17:16-31 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, "What does this babbler wish to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities" because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean." Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, 'To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for "'In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said," 'For we are indeed his offspring.' Being then God s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead." Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING 1 PETER 3:13-22 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God s will, than for doing evil. 4

5 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. OFFERTORY We Give Thee But Thine Own We give Thee but Thine own, Whate er the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee. After each petition the prayer concludes: Pastor: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We look now with joy to our Holy Communion at the Table of our Lord, rejoicing that He comes to us to bless us in this Sacrament of His Presence. Amen. REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION: As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this Holy Supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: We ought to examine ourselves before we eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe that your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you his own body and blood in the Sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Is it your sincere intention to do better in living a Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strengthening from Jesus. 7

8 NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. HOLY COMMUNION Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God. Praising You for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we give You thanks that You send us the Helper, Your Holy Spirit, that we are not left alone, but always strengthened in faith through Your Word and Sacraments.
