1 Don t forget that school starts soon. Look for BOGOs in the stores for school supplies. We are collecting crayons, pencils, erasers, rulers, lined paper, glue sticks and markers for the 20 children for whom we send Pak a Sak bags of food each week. These are children who struggle with food insecurity so we send home food for the weekend. Occasionally a reading assigned for Sunday will have a part printed in brackets meaning it can be included in the text that is heard or not. Today we will not hear this read in the Gospel but it will be referred to in the sermon so it is published here for you to read. [Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. Then the disciples approached and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said? He answered, Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit. But Peter said to him, Explain this parable to us. Then he said, Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. Gathering Prayer from the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church Creator, we give you thanks for all you are and all you bring to us for our visit within your creation. In Jesus, you place the Gospel in the center of this sacred circle through which all of creation is related. You show us the way to live a generous and compassionate life. 5 Holy, Holy, Holy James MacMillan, St. Anne s Mass A Reading from the Book of Genesis 37:1-4, Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now been 6 disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. We have acted for reasons other than love of you and love of neighbor. Forgive us, we pray, and kindle in us the desire to love others as we love ourselves. Amen Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life, and may you be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgives you. Amen. We Exchange the Peace The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We Prepare the Table The bread and wine are placed on the altar. Offertory Prayer Loving God, we bring bread to Christ s table, made by many people s work from an unjust world where some have plenty and most go hungry. At this table, all are fed and no-one turned away. We bring wine, made by many people s work from an unjust world where some have leisure and most struggle to survive. At this table, all share the cup of pain and celebration and no-one is denied. These gifts shall be for us the body and blood of Christ, our witness against hunger, our cry against injustice, And our hope for a world where God is fully known and every child is fed. SPECIAL PRAYERS We invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station located in the alcove of the Chapel. Give your first name and in a low voice, briefly state your prayer need. The person from the prayer team will lay hands on your shoulders and after a short silence, in awareness of God s presence, they will pray quietly for you. 10 7

8 The Holy Gospel The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ According to Matthew 15:21-28 Glory to you Lord Christ Jesus left Gennesaret and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." The Sermon But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." Gigi Conner We Affirm Our Faith Together The Creed, prayer of affirmation is from Enriching Our Worship The Episcopal Church and is closer to the original translation of the Nicene Creed from the Greek. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Amen We Pray for the Church and the World Triune God, we lift up to you a world in need of healing: where borders are drawn to keep some people in and some people out, where some people have less opportunity than others, or less food than others, or less time than others. Grant us compassionate hearts that we may work wonders beyond our imagination. As your daughters and sons, we lift up our families: where siblings do not get along, parents do not get along, or factions within our country who do not get along, Grant unity and bless all households especially the household of this country - with an appreciation of your grace and an awareness of your purpose. God in whose love we are made, When bread is before us Remind us of the hungry. When our key is in our door Remind us of those who have no home. When we enjoy the opportunities of money in our pockets Remind us of those who only know poverty. When the laughter of friendship fills our hearing Remind us of those who know only loneliness. When the love of our family keeps us safe Remind us of those whose family was the place of their pain. When we feel safe in homes and in our land Remind us of those who live in the midst of the injustice of war. When we pray for those who died in the service of this country this past week in Afghanistan: Remind us that there are many people from many lands, their names unknown to us, who have also died in the hope of freedom and peace. When we wonder what it is we can do, Remind us that you said: Whenever you feed the hungry, clothes the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the prisoner, you do it to me. May prayer feed our actions and may our actions feed the world. Amen. 8 9
