The Trestle Board MWSA 6 th Masonic District in Texas Volume 1, Number 2 February, 2017 FROM THE PRESIDENT. The month of February has proven to be a very busy month for the District. We continue to have getting acquainted visits from our new District Instructor, Harry Clark. Brother Clark is also known as Worshipful Harry Clark, Grand Junior Deacon of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas. Brother Clark has already been very helpful in securing some information to assist the District and the MWSA. Our newly installed District Deputy Grand Master, Right Worshipful Spencer Miche is developing his official visit list and will be sending it out soon. He needs to coordinate with another District on his Official visits due to sharing Brother Clark as a District Instructor. Jerry Kirby, Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas began his term by sending out several proclamations requiring specific actions to be taken by constituent Lodges. The first proclamation requires that each Constituent Lodge in the State of Texas hold an Open House on Saturday, May 27, 2017 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The proclamation requires that the proclamation be read at each stated meeting from February to May 27, The proclamation gives specific details about Appendant Bodies attending and participating as well as specific instructions for the District Deputy Grand Master. The Open House will be held under previously distributed guidelines for the October 2016 Open House. The second proclamation is very short and I will publish it verbatim with the exception of the correction of one spelling error. I have been given three interpretations of what the proclamation means; therefore, I will leave the exact meaning to your interpretation of the proclamation. WHEREAS, charity is one of the foremost core values of our fraternity and, WHEREAS, charity has been a hallmark of our fraternity from time immemorial, and WHEREAS, we reach the community through our concern for our fellowmen; I THEREFORE, proclaim that each Lodge shall have a local charity project located in their community or their county which can be of their own design. It may be Fireman of the month, Police Officer of the month, local repair, or such charity as the Lodge may decide. This project shall, commence my (should be by---wrong spelling) March, 2017 in order that results may be shown at the Open House on May 27, I have not received a copy of the third proclamation as of yet. I was informed by Brother Clark, District Instructor that the proclamation relates to having a Masonic educational program at each stated meeting similar to the programs required during the term of PGM Wiggins. He was not aware of any details of the program at this time. I am sure we will be receiving further information and instructions of this Grand Master requirement. Several Lodges reported special activities this month and they are reported in articles dedicated to the activities spread over the pages of this newsletter. The District 6 Masters, Wardens & Secretaries Association had its first meeting after electing and installing Officers. The President has been busy completing paperwork and getting everything in order to ship to Grand Lodge for their approval. The February meeting began with an old Masonic stand by for supper- --Beans & Cornbread. We attended to monthly business and then turned the activities over to the Masons presenting the programs for this month. One business issue regarded minutes of the MWSA meeting. We

voted to publish the minutes on the MWSA website and not read them in open meetings in order to provide adequate time for education activities. If corrections need to be made one can notify Joe Reynolds or myself by or wait to the next meeting and we will get it corrected. The first program was given by bro. Ken Kennedy, Worshipful Master of Oasis Lodge. His subject matter was the reception of the District Deputy Grand Master. Lodges generally receive District Deputies twice per year in an official capacity. The ritual prescribes that this event be acted upon in a very specific and respectful manner. The execution of the reception, when properly performed, is a smooth flowing and impressive exhibition of the task. Bro. Kennedy is a Certificate holder and past District Instructor for many years. He has an excellent grasp, not only of the wording, but the floor work accompanying each task performed in the Lodge. The training was presented in an instructive manner with appropriate elaboration and explanations. Brother Kennedy answered several questions about this task and I feel everyone left the training with a much better understanding of the reception of the DDGM process. This training will be of much comfort to most of the Officers in the Lodges as the time to start receiving the District Deputy Grand Masters is fast approaching. Brother Joe Reynolds, Senior Warden of the Frank Sexton Lodge # 206, and web master for several Lodge web sites in the District including the web site for the MWSA, presented the next training which was actually a demonstration of the new MWSA # 6 web site. He brought his computer and was able to use a movie screen to display the screen pages and information listed on the site. He explained each screen s content, how to access the screens and how each Mason can use the web site for specific activities. In addition, he explained the contact process when one needs to report information or has a question. He discussed future enhancements we can make to offer other services such as computer training modules, announcements of training and special activities, degrees, and the like. Brother Harry Clark, District Instructor, gave a program on the proper process for avouchment or proving up the Lodge. He walked through the process and gave explanations of how, why, and the proper method to execute this task. Avouchment is an extremely important task to be one so infrequently used within the Lodge. This is one of the tasks that all new Masons should see and participate in several times until the process is committed to memory. We plan on having a Masonic Education Program or specified training at each meeting. Depending upon the length we may have a combination of both. In the next couple of months, we expect to expand our capabilities to offer training to new appointed officers related to their performance on the job. Certifying new Line officers by the District Instructor as to their proficiency in opening and closing all four Lodges will be a priority for the MWSA. Also, we want to be available for the A.L.L. Program and the L.I. F.E program that is required for those Officers in the line and should be utilized by everyone in the Lodge. These are two interesting and needed programs when any Mason is interested in the governance of the Lodge. We want to encourage each line officer to attend these meetings and participate in the discussions. Please attend and bring some of your members with you. It is important for the Worshipful Masters to become involved so they can give the MWSA leadership information about the needs of the Lodges and members. The MWSA awarded the Travelling Gavel to The Worshipful Master of David Elliott Lodge # 364 for having the highest attendance at the meeting. The Lodge will get its name on a plaque each time it wins the award. The award will be given each month and the recipient will carry it to his Lodge for the next month and then return it to the next MWSA meeting so that it can be awarded again. If any brother can think of a subject that they would like to have training or an educational program on, please feel free to contact any of the Officers or bring it up at the meeting. We will attempt to find the resource to provide the training or program. Our next meeting will be held on the fourth Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Old Union Community Center. Refreshments will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there. Rex McGee President, MWSA 6 th District

MWSA OFFICERS President Rex McGee Vice President Rhett McCullough Secretary-Treasurer Mark Munkres Chaplain Jerry Rook Webmaster Joe Reynolds To enlarge the sphere of social happiness is worthy of the benevolent design of a Masonic institution; and it is most fervently to be wished, that the conduct of every member of the fraternity, as well as those publications, that discover the principles which actuate them, may tend to convince mankind that the grand object of Masonry is to promote the happiness of the human race. [Letter to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1793] George Washington, Writings The Mt. Vernon Lodge & Eastern Star Chapter Scholarship Breakfast The Mt. Vernon Masons & Eastern Star members have held a scholarship breakfast for over twenty years in order to raise funds to provide scholarships for deserving students. The members of the organizations, who perform all the cooking & housekeeping services related to the event meet on the first Saturday of each month and serve the public between the hours of 7:00 a.m. & 9:00 a.m. The menu generally consists of eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, jelly and pancakes along with a glass of orange juice or a great cup of coffee. The organizations do not charge a fixed price for the breakfast, but they do accept donations to the scholarship fund. The members of the organization raise funds that will allow them to award four Masonic Lodge scholarships and three Eastern Star Scholarships in most years. The members of the Lodge & Eastern Star serve approximately thirty to forty individuals at each breakfast. The students awarded these scholarships attend special programs conducted at the Lodge by both the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star to be awarded their scholarship. The obvious results of these Masons & Eastern Star member s effort is to assist deserving students in continuing their future education and it also builds a solid rapport with the community as the community sees the efforts put forth by the Lodge & Eastern Star to be good & productive citizens of the community in which they reside. Come out to the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge on the South side of Interstate 30 on the first Saturday of each month between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and enjoy a great breakfast, visit with your friends and neighbors and help a worthy cause. MASONS DURING THE CIVIL WAR An example of how a lodge was saved: After 4 years of war, the weary and almost defeated Confederate Army was retreating and leaving the Confederate capital of Richmond to its own fate. As the army retreated, fires broke out in all sections of the city. Hoodlums, deserters, and criminals, with no law and order, began to pillage the city. Just as the city seemed to be doomed, a Union cavalry unit swung up Franklin Street. The bearded colonel looked warily at the riff raff around him who were about to fire a building which bore a sign "Masonic Hall." Taking command of the moment, he halted his troopers and ordered that an adjutant "have all Masons wheel out of column." Almost half of his force moved out. From this group he ordered a suitable guard to protect the Masonic Temple. The column reformed and resumed its ride. Later General Godfrey Weitzel, a Mason, gave the order, after a request by the Lodge, to continue the guard. The building saved is said to have been the oldest purely Masonic building in America with records dating back to 1787, and the historic building itself was built in 1785 by Richmond Lodge 10. The Grand Lodge assembled here after its formation in Williamsburg until its move in R.W. Houghton in a report relates a slightly different story to the saving of the lodge in Richmond, or he could be referring to a different building. Emanuel Semon reported that Major A.H. Stevens, the Provost Marshal of Richmond, raised the first Union flags over the city of Richmond and that immediately after doing so went looking for the Masonic Lodge. Brother Semon was one of the first he met there and Semon stated that he had

"quartered against the approach of cowans and eavesdroppers for the last 25 years." Major Stevens immediately sent Semon a guard and made sure that the officer of the guard was a Mason. He also sent a guard to Semon's home, Semon's daughter's home and to a number of other Masons' homes in the city. A third account exists of the saving of the Masonic Hall. In the history of Lodge Francaise No. 53 A.F. & A.M. published in 1874 their Tiler, Brother Thomas Angel, was commended for saving the temple. Recognizing that his duties as Tiler not only pertained to "guarding the entrance" but also to the general protection and "covering" the lodge from all harm, Brother Angel with "commendable zeal, energy and presence of mind" took action even with the Federal troops bearing down on the city of Richmond. After conversing with Grand Secretary Dove of the Virginia Grand Lodge, he proceeded to collect all the jewels and what clothing he could find from every lodge in the city and deposited them in the Masonic Hall on Franklin Street. Angel then proceeded to dress himself in the "time honored badge of a Mason" and took his place at the door of the Temple. The Northern troops respected the guard placed at the Temple by Major Stevens. The guard under the command of another Mason, Sergeant Gibbs, remained with Brother Angel day and night for three months. STAR NEWS a very interesting program at each chapter and then passed out friendship gifts to everyone present. Pittsburg Chapter #381 Worthy Matron, Diann Norton, reported that approximately 30 members and visitors were present for the event. The members and guests were treated to a wonderful meal prepared by the Ladies of the Chapter. The Chapter was also honored by the presence of Ms. Sherrie Fowler, District Deputy Grand Matron of District 1 and two Deputy Grand Matrons, Ms, Judy Harris, District 1, Section 9 and Ms. Dale Woodard, District 1, Section 10 attending the meeting. Omaha Chapter # 997 Worthy Matron, Carolyn Kimbrel, reported that approximately 28 members and visitors were present for their event. The members and guests were treated to a wonderful meal prepared by the Ladies of the Chapter. The Chapter was also honored by the presence of Ms. Sherrie Fowler, District Deputy Grand Matron of District 1 and Deputy Grand Matron, Ms. Judy Harris, District 1, Section 9. It is always an honor to be visited by a Grand Officer and we look forward to those occasions throughout the year. If, anywhere, brethren of a particular religious belief have been excluded from this Degree [18 Knight Rose Croix], it merely shows how gravely the purposes and plan of Masonry may be misunderstood. For whenever the door of any Degree is closed against him who believes in one God and the soul's immortality, on account of the other tenets of his faith, that Degree is Masonry no longer. Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry THIS MONTH S RIDDLE The Order of the Eastern Star in Pittsburg and Omaha had a very special guest this month. That special guest was Ms. Carolyn Martin, Grand Conductress, Grand Chapter of Texas, Order of the Eastern Star. Ms. Martin gave greetings and provided the yearly friendship program for each Chapter. 6 THIS MONTH S HUMOR The Master's Wife A mason who had just been installed as Master of his lodge and was duly attending all the functions he could, was having a hard time with his wife, who said, "All those masters-in-office have to do is click their fingers and you would be there wouldn't you? I wish I was a master!" After due thought, he said, "So do I dear, we swap them for a new one every year!!" The Shrine Club is always looking for new members, but one does not have to be a member to attend. We try to have a program of general interest each month at the meeting. Come on out and enjoy a night of good fellowship with fellow Masons and Shriner s. It's Great To Be A Freemason By Danny Thomas, 33* The years found me an admirer of the great work the Masonic Order has been doing in making this world a better place for all of us to live. I have, for a long time, desired to be one of you and rejoice that now I can proudly boast of my membership in one of the world's greatest fraternal associations. I am grateful for those individuals who have in quiet ways motivated me in my work on behalf of unfortunate children. I am grateful for the high moment in my life when the doors of Freemasonry were opened to me. Since then I have had many pleasant times of fraternal fellowship and even opportunities for service in the work of many branches of Freemasonry. Our Order, for now I can say, "our order," teaches, "the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God" and this is great! The world needs so desperately to discover the value of this great truth in human relationships and world affairs. It is also a truth that will motivate men and women to continue to explore avenues of service and areas of common concerns in order to restore a measure of sanity to the madness of our day and to enrich the quality of life for all peoples everywhere. Now I join hands and heart with you in all your endeavors of philanthropy and say we must not slacken our efforts "to do good to all," especially those with needs that will not be met if we fail in our common task of service to humanity. On stage, screen, platform, and in private life I have always sought to bring a smile to the face of others and put a little joy in their lives. I am grateful now for the larger opportunity which is mine to adopt the tenets of Freemasonry as my own and hopefully be able to have a small part in spreading Masonry's message of love and caring to a larger audience, for wherever I go, I will be proud to tell others of my work and concern in behalf of all that you are doing, unselfishly, for others. Someone once asked me why did I want to be a Mason and my reply was: "Because Masons care for those who cannot care for themselves." The Shriners have always been a favorite of mine because of their work for crippled and burned children. Also I am excited about efforts proposed at the recent Conference of Grand Masters in regard to drug abuse among young people. (From the October 1990 Fresno Scottish Rite Bulletin with credit to Kansas Masonic Bulletin) It is great to be a Freemason! I am proud of what we are doing. I shall assist in every way I can our work of mercy, and it doesn't hurt to be a Brother with a "big mouth and lots of television cameras" to help get the message across. Masons are people of goodwill who

want to "keep our kids alive" and we are doing this throughout the world. Our purpose is noble and humanitarian. Our labors will be crowned with success, for as Freemasons we will bring to our mission the best we have, regardless of what it demands from us in the way of sacrifice and service. We will make sure that in the tomorrows, life will be better for those who suffer today. I was a Freemason in my heart long before I was accepted as a member in this great Fraternity. I was an out-sider but now I am one of you, and the remaining years of my life will be spent in seeking in some small way to say to all: "Thank you for making me a Freemason." I want always to make you laugh but I trust that I will also make you care and that now, together, we will put melody in the heart of the world that will sing of a better life for all people. The task challenges us to larger efforts and higher goals that will demand from all of us the best we have to make a better life for others. My promise to Freemasons everywhere is that I will give the task my best! Brother Danny Thomas was a world-famous entertainer and the founder of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the world's only institution devoted solely to the study and treatment of catastrophic childhood illnesses. HELP NEEDED The Trestle Board is always looking for articles, information, and tid-bits for our newsletter. If you have something to contribute, know of an event that is not already in our Calendar, or just run across something interesting on the Internet, please let me know. Chances are, if you found it interesting, other Brothers will fill the same way. I can always use good jokes, riddles, quotes, or articles about our Order. One person cannot keep coming up with things for the newsletter, so let s all pitch in and help. Annual Pancake Breakfast David Elliott Lodge # 364 in Omaha, Texas Mark Munkres, Master of David Elliott Lodge # 364 in Omaha, Texas announces its annual Pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 29 th, 2017 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Lodge will be selling tickets for five dollars each for the event. If you have questions about the Lodge Pancake Breakfast or desire to purchase tickets you may contact Tommy G. Heard, Senior Warden of the Lodge and Organizer of the event at 903/ THIS MONTH S QUESTION Why is the Masonry of today called "speculative"? The word is used in the same sense that the Masonry of today is theoretical, not practical, building; that it is a pursuit of knowledge, not the construction of edifices. Speculative Masonry begins with the practice of admitting to membership in operative lodges men who were not practical builders, stonecutters, architects, etc., but who were interested in the moral, ethical and philosophical teachings of the Fraternity Source: One Hundred One Questions about Freemasonry, MSA 1960 NEWSLETTER EDITOR Brother Larry Joe Reynolds 1007 Stone Shore Street Mount Pleasant, TX (903) Joe.Reynolds@franksexton206.org Opinions expressed by individual writers are their own and do not necessarily reflect official positions of the MSWA Association of the 6 th Masonic District.
