1 OCTOBER 2013 On Sunday, September 22, 2013, it was with a heavy heart that I informed the church of the passing of Rev. Dr. A. Knighton Stanley. The service was dedicated to his ministry at Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ. The service included reflections from numerous members. Dr. Stanley Served as the eighth Senior Minister of Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ for 38 years. A memorial service in celebration of his life and ministry will be held at Peoples Church on Thursday, October 10, 2013 beginning at noon. I share with you a personal note, one of many, that he sent to me. I know that he wrote personal notes of expression to many in the Peoples Church family. Here is an excerpt from a note dated July 24, Dear Michael, You are on my mind and in my heart. I m about three-fourths finished another book. It will be a book of my fifteen sermons. I believe the title of it will be Grace at the End of the Day. I m at that stage in my life where I recognize that we go through much. But if we have trusted God and are faithful to the task, God s abundant grace is heaped on us and we are blessed. These sermons are a mixture of hope and assurance for one s personal life or will or how we should move as Christians in society. I ve had nice visits and an abundant outflow of cards and telephone calls from Peoples members. I appreciate that more than I can tell you Let us celebrate and honor his ministry and legacy on Thursday, October 10, Please remember to keep his family in your prayers. Here is one of Dr. Stanley s favorite scriptures: Finally, bretheren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

2 MISSION AND VISION OF THE CHURCH MISSION OF THE CHURCH The Mission of Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is: To worship God and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to labor for peace and justice so that the world may become the kingdom of God on earth; To foster within its membership, by its teaching and its ministry, the spirit which was in Christ; To be to its membership and the community a source of spiritual refreshment, guidance, transformation, comfort and support; To impress upon its membership the need for mutual loyalty and charity; To teach its young people the noble traditions of its past; to point them to the possibilities of its future, and to give guidance in the building of Christian character; and To educate and develop its members for consecrated and sacrificial service. VISION OF THE CHURCH so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individu-ally we are members of one another. (Romans 12:5 NRSV) Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is a progressive Christian community called by faith, led by hope, and united by love to build strong and committed disciples for Jesus Christ and to be a spiritual presence locally and globally in service to humanity. This vision is lived out through our fo-cus on relationship with the Lord, which produces perspective; scholarship in study of the Scriptures, which produces focus; stewardship awareness in our giving and sharing which produces trust; and fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ, which produces unity. Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, so that a run-ner may read it, for there is a vision for the appointed time (Habakkuk 2:2-3 NRSV)

The Wellness Corner Too busy to eat breakfast or lunch? Skipping meals just sets you up for trouble in the form of overeating or poor choices. Too busy to plan ahead? Is it easier just to grab something? Planning provides for meals that are healthier and more likely to provide the foods that are high in nutrients and lower in sodium, sugar, fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. Everybody knows the importance of fruits and vegetables. Planning ahead allows you to have those items on hand so when it s time to eat, you will be ready with healthy choices. Think carbohydrates (aka carbs) are bad? There are 2 kinds: Simple carbohydrates are sugars; complex carbohydrates are starch and fiber- and we need them! Carbohydrates are important nutrients ; and with simple carbohydrates, moderation is the key. Imagine never having any desserts! Feeling deprived is often what makes people spin out of control. Remember plan ahead, eat regular meals and avoid hunger. Hunger sends you looking for empty calorie snacks and/or overeating: the enemies of good health. Make regular meals, planning and increasing fruits and vegetables your goals. Christenings Sunday, September 22nd, was a high moment at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Three infants were christened. Surrounded by their families, Ava Lillian Morris, Jaden Hosea Taylor, and Pearl Onra Kerns were all christened in Peoples Church!

They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. (James 5:13-16 NRSV) (202)

8 MODERATOR S ADDRESS TO PEOPLES CHURCH 9/15/13 Good morning, Peoples Church, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours, Grace to you and peace from our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. peace which has been extended to us from God the Father. This is how Paul greets the church at Corinth in his letter 1 Corinthians 1. I think it is a beautiful greeting symbolizing the unity of all people who call on the name of the Lord. Further, it symbolizes how we as brothers and sisters in Christ ought to greet each other with the grace and It is with humility that I accept the call to be moderator of Peoples Church. I appreciate your prayers and well wishes and ask for your continued support. I also want to thank the immediate past Moderator Bradley Thomas and all church members who have served in that role. I hope to continue their legacy of dedicated service to the congregation. At this point I would like to introduce the chairpersons of the four boards, Cheryl Randall Thomas, Board of Christian Education, Steven Bullock, Board of Trustees, Dr. James Jones, Diaconate and Lynda Mack and Paula Shelton, Board of Christian Social Action. Dr. Jones also serves as the Moderator Elect. My promise to you is that I will do my best to encourage and support the unity of Peoples Church. To do this we need to first acknowledge Jesus Christ as the head of this church. We then need to acknowledge each member as our brother or sister in Christ. Doing so will inform how we treat each other. We talked yesterday at the Leadership Awareness Institute about the priesthood of believers and our calling to serve the congregations. Even though we may have been elected or appointed, if we believe that our lives happen according to God s perfect will, we realize that we have been called to do this work, here and now. The Church Council s scriptural focus is about our Father s business. As I met with each of the Boards, I encouraged them to adopt a scriptural focus which will inform their work. The Boards and the Church Council represent you and your interests. We need to hear from you and will be looking to enhance the communication between the Boards, the Council and the congregation. We commit to greater accessibility. We have agreed to work on reconciliation and conflict resolution skills. We promise to work to maintain healthy working relationships with the Ministers. Peoples Church, we are the beneficiaries of God s grace and a huge legacy of those who went before. We cannot let our fears and differences separate us from each other and from the love of God. A degree of conflict is inevitable as we grow and evolve. We were never promised a trouble free life but we have been promised faith enough for our journey. When confusion and chaos lurks, be still and know that I am God. God is with us and has promised never to leave us. Let us move forward, therefore, trusting God to lead us in all things. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
