February 2018 Times of HOPE A publication of Hope United Methodist Church In this Issue Pastor Brian s Faith Works 2 Potato Bowl Thanks You! 2 Scouting Celebration 2 Missions Corner 3 Memorials Opportunity on the Patio 3 Confirmation Mentors Needed 3 Newsletter Deadline 3 Music Notes 4 Kids Stuff 5 BE THE LIGHT By Cindy Gleason During 2017, an unprecedented amount of disasters devastated America and its territories. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria caused devastation in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerta Rico, and the US Territories. Fires destroyed land in homes in the western US while floods, tornados, record snow and rainfalls hit in other states ended in darkness. However, Hope can be the light in 2018 to help those affected by disasters. Here is how you can be the light: PRAY: Pray for those affected by disasters. Disaster relief is not measured in days, but in years. The road to recovery is long. Pray for those affected with loss of loved ones/property. Pray for those responding to help. Pray that 2018 is a better year to allow the recovery process. HOPE DISASTER RELIEF TEAM: The Mission Special Offering is for the Hope Disaster Relief Team (HDRT). Since 2011, the fund donates to UMCOR-West to purchase supplies to ship/create disaster relief kits. The team has experienced work stoppages because of a lack of supplies. Right now UMCOR-West and Sager-Brown (depot in Baldwin, LA) are focusing on Health Kits, School Kits, and Cleaning Buckets to be distributed to American cities and territories affected by the disasters and to begin stockpiling for any future disasters. HEART FOR HOPE: There is a plan to have an all-church opportunity to make kits/donate supplies. These kits will be forwarded to UMCOR-West. Please watch for details. Last year, there were over 100 health kits donated and lots of supplies left at UMCOR for more kits to be made. Each kit from Hope brought hope and prayers to someone in need. UMCOR-West: HDRT is scheduled for another trip to Salt Lake City the week of April 15th. We will be there from Sunday night to Friday. The team will be making/shipping kits and doing at least one day of community service. UMCOR-West is partnering with Habitat for Humanity and there will be opportunities to work with them. There are still some openings on the team if interested. To learn more about the trip or about HDRT, there will be a light luncheon and meeting in the Jones Center on Sunday, Feb 25th from 12:30-2:30. I can also be contacted at jimcyn73@hotmail.com. Again, 2018 Be The Light to bring hope to a hurting world!
Pastor Brian s Faith Works The season of Lent is upon us. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, and reaches its peak on Easter Sunday, April 1. I would like to talk about some services that will happen in this season. Ash Wednesday is also Valentines Day. We talked about whether this would be a problem and decided to keep the same time as usual for the Ash Wednesday service, 7:00PM. You can have your Valentines dates a different day or a different hour, and this sign of humility (the ashes on the forehead) is good for any day or holiday. All of the Sundays in Lent are known as Mini-Easters. Each Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Palm and Passion Weekend is March 24 & 25. This day celebrates the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, and anticipate the events of Holy Week which culminate in the Cross and Resurrection. Maundy Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 PM, remembers that last supper of Jesus with his disciples, where they had their Passover Meal together and Jesus gave the Love Commandment. Good Friday Services will be at Noon and at 7:00 PM. Each will be based around the music of the Resurrection Symphony, Mahler s Second Symphony and amazing words written as program notes for this performance. Each will be about an hour and 20 minutes. Saturday s 5 PM service will immediately follow the Kid s Easter Egg Hunt and Party, with the emphasis being the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ in a format that kids and families will love. Easter Sunrise service: 6:30 AM. Easter Services at our regular Sunday service times: 9:00 and 10:45 AM. I invite you to this journey of faith, looking inward at our lives and bursting outward by the power of the resurrection offered to us. Peace and Love and New Life in Christ Pastor Brian Kent POTATO BOWL THANKS! A huge thank you goes out to everyone who contributed food, time and energy to the youth group s fundraising Potato Bowl. Suzanne Lee-Vigilia, Elizabeth Dyson-Reynolds, Carin Pratt and Jim Frost were superstars in the kitchen, and there were countless others who helped in the efforts. The youth are extremely grateful for all of the love and support from the wonderful people at Hope UMC! We are well on our way to our summer mission trip thanks to all of you. 2 SCOUTING CELEBRATION Attention all scouts. We would like you to wear your uniforms to worship on March 10thand 11th! We have many friends who participate in troop 686 here at Hope and many other friends who participate in boy scout and girl scout troops across San Diego county. Please remember to wear your uniforms March 10th and 11th for this fun acknowledgement.
MISSIONS CORNER It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Lynn Rummel, who, for several years, was chairman of Hope s Outreach/Missions Com. Lynn was an exuberant, enthusiastic supporter of our many missions. She never seemed to run out of energy or enthusiasm. Lynn had lived overseas and traveled the world she saw poverty and heart-ache first hand; her heart was with those who most needed our help. While we know that Lynn is in a better place, we wish that she were still with us. Her spirit and good works live on. May God bless all those who love and miss her. Our special offering for February is Hope s Disaster Relief Team, who will be making their annual trip to UMCOR West in Salt Lake City in mid-april. Please see Cindy Gleason s article about the upcoming trip and how we can help. Thanks to all who supported Ninos de la Promesa, the orphanage in Tijuana, with January s special offering and also at Alternative Christmas. Through your generosity we are able to send almost $2000 to help provide these children with a safe and warm place to live, an education and a future. Our committee meets the last Monday of each month and will be meeting on Feb. 26, 7 PM in the Jones Building. Please join us as we continue to do God s work in the world. Terry Sieck Assistant Chair 3 PATIO BENCHES There are eight benches in the patio which are designated for memorials/living tributes. Two of them have been taken, so six remain. If you are interested in funding a bench, please call Terry Badger, for further information. You need not pay the $1500 price of the bench at this time. The six benches are in bad shape and need to be replaced, and there will not be more than eight total. This is the only item that will allow names of memorials/donor tributes. Reservations will be accepted. CONFIRMATION MENTORS NEEDED Are you an adult who wants to make a difference in a young person s life? I have the perfect opportunity for you. I am searching for mentors who can walk with our youth during their Confirmation journey. There will be some face-to-face meetings during the Gathering Spot time, and weekly correspondence with the youth in whatever way you both prefer whether it be by text, , or phone. The fun will begin on February 25th and conclude on Confirmation weekend, May 19 & 20 when our young people will join the Hope UMC congregation. For more information or to sign up, contact Lorrie Frost. youthlorrie@gmail.com The deadline for submissions for the next Times of Hope is 9:00AM, MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2018 FOR MAR. 11-APR. 8, 2018 and beyond. Submit articles to the church office or to melissa.basch@hopeumc.com.
MUSIC NOTES This Month in worship... In the month of February, the music ministry is keeping busy. On Feb. 11, we have our our awesome Joyful Noise Children s Choir singing a Veggie Tales classic, I Can Be Your Friend, with cute speaking parts that each child gets to participate in! That afternoon, we have our Sweethearts Date FUN-raiser with cookies, decadent desserts, sappy love songs, and pastoral comedy... a must-see event! Our SNA services will feature 3 different percussionists this month: Chuck Housand on Feb. 3 & 10, Bob Bush on Feb. 17, and a new musician, Mike Yates, on Feb. 24. Beth Jones and Wendy Kallen will share music for Ash Wednesday, which is on Feb. 14 this year. In Sunday worship, come hear the Hope Ringers on Feb. 11, and our new Flute Choir on Feb. 17! Read about our Holy Week choir and our upcoming concert on March 4 in this edition. Let the countdown begin from now to Easter! Holy Week Choir Has Begun! It s not too late to join us! Holy Week Choir rehearsals starts Thursday, Feb 8, 2018, at 7:30pm. Holy Week Choir sings 2 services on Palm Sunday, March 25, 1 service on Maundy Thursday, March 29, and 2 services on Easter Sunday, April 1. For a total of 8 weeks, this choir rehearses 8 anthems including the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel s Messiah. This year we will also bring back Lacrimosa from Mozart s Requiem. You will receive a rehearsal CD, folder, and music when you come on Feb. 8 or if you miss the first one, come on Feb. 15. Rehearsals are one hour each week and in the sanctuary. To sign up or to find out more, contact Ginny Lorenz, our choir manager, at jlorenz5@san.rr.com. March 4 Combined Choral Concert Hope UMC & RBHS This Lenten season, the Hope Concert Series has scheduled our very own Hope Choirs and the Rancho Bernardo High School Madrigals and Advanced Women s Ensembles to share a concert together on Sunday afternoon, March 4, at 2:00pm. All three groups will sing a few selections separately, but will conclude the concert by jointly singing Lacrimosa from Mozart s Requiem. The Madrigals and Advanced Women s Ensemble are comprised of audition only singers from 9th through 12th grade. These groups consistently receive superior ratings at choral festivals throughout the country. Both groups are adept at singing music from the Middle Ages to present day literature. They will be conducted by director, Lisa Friedrichs. The concert is free, a free-will offering will be taken, and there will be a lovely reception to follow. All are invited! Save the Date! Sunday, April 22 Artists-in-Residence, Quartet Nouveau String Quartet 2:00pm Friday-Sunday, June 1-3 CCS Composer Festival, sponsored by JWPepper featuring composers Lloyd Larson, Joel Raney, and Joe Martin 4
NEXT G.A.N.G MEETING: FEB. 11 Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to come to our next meeting on Sunday, Feb. 11 from 4:30-6:00pm. G.A.N.G. stands for God s Awesome Next Generation and meets in the children s S.S. rooms J1 & J2. Led by Carin Pratt, Jon Brady, Cara Reynolds, and Evan Vigilia, G.A.N.G. is designed to help 4th & 5th graders stay connected to church while having lots of wild and crazy fun. Each evening will wrap up with pizza, so please bring $5 to help pay for it if you can. If you have food allergies, please bring dinner from home. Mark your calendar with these upcoming dates: Feb. 11 & 25, March 11 & 25. EASTER EGGS Spring is around the corner, which means our annual Easter Party & Egg Hunt will be Saturday, March 31. This is always great fun for our children and a wonderful outreach event for your friends and family who do not attend Hope. However, in order to make this party a success we need donations of plastic eggs filled with wrapped candy. Please bring your donations (marked Church Egg Hunt ) to church on weekends or to the church office during the week. Thank you in advance for your help! SAVE MONEY ON DISTRICT SUMMER CAMPS! On Sunday, March 11 a representative from the District will be on the patio between services to register kids up for District Summer Camps. If you register before March 31, you will get a $50 Early Bird discount! If you miss the March 11 registration at Hope, you may register online at Dates for District Summer Camps are: Younger Elementary (1st-3rd grades) June Older Elementary (4th-6th grades) June Jr. High July 8-14 Sr. High July Kid s THIS FLU SEASON... Stuff As you know, we are having a particularly difficult flu and cold season this year. In an effort to keep everyone children, parents, teachers, and childcare providers healthy, and to minimize exposure to germs, we are observing the following policies regarding children s classes and childcare at Hope: Please do not bring your child to the Nursery or to class if he has or has had in the past 24 hours any of the following symptoms: fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, runny nose, pink eye, ear pain, sore throat. If your child shows obvious signs of illness, including runny nose or eyes, your child will not be permitted to stay in the Nursery or class. Out of an abundance of caution during this extreme cold and flu season, we must enforce this policy even if the discharge is clear. Thank you for understanding. If your child becomes symptomatic while she is in the Nursery or class, you will be asked to take her home. If your child has a dirty diaper when you drop him off in the Nursery, you will be asked to change it before you leave in order to minimize the transfer of germs. If your child develops a dirty diaper while she is in the Nursery, you will be called to come and change it in order to minimize the transfer of germs. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Carrie in the church office: , x103.
