1 SUNDAY 5th August 2018 Pentecost 11 Charity Number SC The Scottish Episcopal Church St John s, Arpafeelie: St Andrew s, Fortrose: St Regulus, Cromarty The Black Isle Family of Congregations The Rev'd Canon (Father) Mel Langille Tha Eaglais Easbuigeach na h-alba / The Scottish Episcopal Church 1 Dean's Road Fortrose, Ross-shire, Scotland IV10 8TJ Phone: mel@sagart.me.uk THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD EVERYONE WHO IS BAPTISED is welcome to share with us in Communion this morning. There is no need to be a member of the Episcopal Church. Please feel free to celebrate with us. If you are not baptised or would prefer, you are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing (simply come forward with hands together and head bowed as a sign to the priest). + The First Reading : Exodus 16:2-4, Psalm 78:23-29 The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. So he commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna upon them to eat and gave them grain from heaven. The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. So mortals ate the bread of angels; he provided for them food enough. He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and led out the south wind by his might. The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. He rained down flesh upon them like dust and winged birds like the sand of the sea. The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. He let it fall in the midst of their camp and round about their dwellings. So they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. The Lord feeds his people the bread of angels. + Second Reading : Ephesians 4:1-16 Gradual Hymn/Acclamation + THE HOLY GOSPEL : John 6:24-35 Vestry Secretary: Ramsay McGhee, Tigh Ur, Deans Road, Fortrose. 5 Hymns for Sunday at St Andrew s Intro: We hail thy presence Gradual: Sing we a song Offertory: Come O thou traveller Communion O God unseen Recessional: Glorious things SAINTS THIS WEEK - St Boisil of Melrose : 7 August Boisil is chiefly known to us through his influence on the young St.Cuthbert. He was prior of Melrose, under the abbot Eata, when Cuthbert, aged about 17 and after his vision of St. Aidan's soul being taken up into heaven, decided to become a monk. It was chiefly through Boisil's reputation as a holy man that Cuthbert chose Melrose as his community. Boisil is said to have been standing at the gate as Cuthbert approached the monastery, and immediately to have recognised the spiritual potential in the new arrival. He seems to have been an important teacher and friend to Cuthbert, who took him as a role model, not least in his missionary journeys by foot in search of those who had not yet heard of the faith of Christ. When Cuthbert was in his late 20s both he and Boisil caught the plague; Cuthbert recovered, but Boisil had 7 days' warning of his own death. The two of them spent these days in reading together St. John' Gospel, which Boisil had in a copy conveniently divided into 7 sections. Boisil had a gift of prophecy, and predicted that Cuthbert would become a bishop: a saying that haunted Cuthbert until it finally came true. After Boisil's death Cuthbert succeeded him as prior of Melrose. One story of Boisil which is not connected with Cuthbert tells how he intervened to prevent another English monk, Egbert, from taking part in person in a mission to the Germans. Boisil, now a saint in heaven, appeared in a vision to another of his former pupils, to tell him to inform Egbert that it was not God's will that he should go, and Egbert finally reluctantly agreed. It seems that Boisil, who died in about 661, was held in great respect in his neighbourhood, and the little town of St. Boswell's, not far from Melrose, is named after him. Like many another good teacher, his fame finally rested mainly on those whom he influenced. St John Mason Neale : 9 August John Mason Neale was born in 1818 and, whilst an undergraduate at Cambridge, was influenced by the ideas of the Tractarians. He was a founder of the Cambridge Camden Society, which stimulated interest in ecclesiastical art and which played a part in the revival of Catholic ritual in the Church of England. Whilst Warden of Sackville College, East Grinstead, a post he held from 1846, Neale co -founded the Society of St Margaret, which grew into one of the largest of Anglican women's Religious communities...dedicated (at that time) to nursing the sick and the poor. Neale is remembered as an accomplished hymn-writer (our red hymnbook lists him as author/translator of no less than 32 hymns in it alone...he also wrote, Good King Wenceslaus) and his influence on Episcopalian/Anglican worship has been considerable. He visited our own St Andrew s prior to the additions made by Fr Spence Ross time. He is an ancestor of Betty Marshall and family and we are blessed to possess a chasuble once owned by him...along with a stole and two maniples! He suffered frail health for many years and died on the feast of the Transfiguration in 1866.

6 THE ARPAFEELIE ROAD PROJECT Members of the Charge may be wondering what is happening with the road leading from the A9 up to St John s Church. It is in a really bad state, so much so, that many folk are refusing to use it for fear of damaging their vehicles. GOOD NEWS - while I acknowledge that it has taken a while to get companies to submit tender documents and even longer to try and raise the necessary finance to repair the road, we are now at the stage of awarding the contract albeit we are still a bit short of the amount we need to have the work completed. But, we are pressing on and hope to have the road resurfaced before the end of October. If any of our members, former members, friends of members, half cousins of members, nodding acquaintances of members - in fact anyone at all would like to contribute to the work, please send donations either to Peter Furniss our Treasurer or if you want to make BACS payments, the bank details are as follows: Account name: Black Isle Charge Sort code: Account No If sending money by BACS, it would be helpful if you could drop Peter a note by so that he will know what the donation is - his is - peterfurniss@btinternet.com If sending a cheque, it can be left in any of the churches in an envelope marked Peter Furniss - Road Project - or sent to him at 62 Feddon Hill, Fortrose, IV10 8SP Once the negotiating is over and contracts placed, I will give a detailed account of the expenditure incurred and the source of the income. Many thanks WRM - Vestry Secretary

12 General Synod Committee Vacancies A number of the General Synod s committees are currently seeking new members. If you are interested in serving the church in this way or would like further information, please contact the relevant member of staff as detailed below. Appointments are typically made by the Committee s parent board and are for a period of four years (with the option to serve a second term of four years). The committees currently seeking new members usually meet during the working day in the General Synod Office in Edinburgh. (Travel expenses are reimbursed.) Investment Committee The Committee is responsible for overseeing the performance of the Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) Unit Trust Pool. It meets two or three times a year with the Church s Fund Managers to review performance and to discuss matters of policy. Membership of the Committee is suited to individuals with an active involvement in the investment industry. Further information from Daphne Audsley DaphneA@scotland.anglican.org Retirement Housing Committee Much of the Committee s work is concerned with the oversight of the church s stock of about forty properties occupied by retired clergy. The Committee aims to have a mix of clergy (either serving or retired, who are beneficiaries of the SEC Pension Fund), clergy spouses / civil partners (or widowed spouses / civil partners) and others with an interest in the welfare of beneficiaries of the SEC Pension Fund. Given its focus on housing matters (including considerations of the needs of ageing and infirm tenants) individuals with relevant knowledge and experience are particularly welcome. The Committee normally meets three times a year. Further information from Daphne Audsley DaphneA@scotland.anglican.org A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note. "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation." Scottish Episcopal Institute Lecture 2018 This year s Lecture will be held on Thursday 11 October at in Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews. Professor Elaine Graham, Grosvenor Research Professor of Practical Theology, University of Chester and Canon Theologian of Chester Cathedral, will deliver a paper entitled Liberating the Laity: a Theology for a Learning Church. The Lecture, sponsored by the School of Divinity at St Andrews University, is open to all free of charge, and is followed by a reception.
