2 HOY BAPTISM Introduction Martin uther said that without the two Sacraments of the hurch, no one can be a hristian. Through Holy Baptism we are welcomed into the faith community by God s act of washing and forgiveness. This is his work, not ours! Through this gift of water connected to God s Word, we are claimed as God s own children, set apart for his work in the world, and made holy. Baptism offers believers the promise of eternal life, mercy and forgiveness, as well as victory over sin - keeping original sin in check daily as we remember to whom we belong. When uther wrote the explanations of the Ten ommandments, he answered his own question of What does this mean. with an answer that always began, We are to fear and love God so that. Original Sin, that Old Adam that persistently and perniciously has his hand around our necks, causes us to focus solely on ourselves and our own desires. Without Baptism we continue to be beholden to Original Sin and cannot break free of it on our own. However, with the Sacrament of Baptism we are empowered to fear and love God and live full in his presence. Daily we are encouraged to remember our Baptism so that we might live in communion with God, do his will, and put him first in our lives. Martin uther called Holy Baptism the medicine that swallows up death and keeps all people alive (). He also referred to it as the greatest jewel, our daily garment, and a divine treasure. It puts to death the Old Adam within us and grants us to daily rise to new life in hrist. We receive this gift in faith and trust in its power for salvation. It is a lifelong venture to comprehend the gifts and grace that come to us through this Holy Sacrament. The entire hrist is given to us in it - and therefore we lack nothing if we have been baptized in him. 2

Amen. ong ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways, by the prophets, but in these last days God has spoken to us by the Son. He is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. Since we have confidence by the new and living way opened for us by Jesus, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith. 3

5 Dialogue on Holy Baptism Baptism is not merely water; it is water used according to God s command and connected with God s Word. It is the Word of our ord Jesus hrist as recorded in the last chapter of Matthew: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It brings about forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives everlasting salvation to all who believe, as the Word and promise of God declare. This is the Word of our ord Jesus hrist as recorded in the last chapter of Mark: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. It is not the water that does these things, but the Word of God connected with the water and our faith which relies on that Word. For without the Word of God it is simply water and not Baptism. But when connected with the Word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of regeneration in the Holy Spirit. It signifies that the old Adam in us, together with all sins and evil desires, should be drowned by daily repentance and sorrow for sin, and be put to death, 5

6 and that the new person should come forth every day and rise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. As Saint Paul says in Romans: We are buried therefore with him by Baptism into death, in order that, just as hrist was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. All are seated. First esson: Romans 6: 1-11 What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into hrist Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as hrist was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with hrist, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that hrist, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in hrist Jesus. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for[c] a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus hrist, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. 9 THE NIENE REED A We confess our hristian faith in the words of the Nicene reed. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one ord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, ight from ight, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the ord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

10 Prayers of the People Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God s creation. Silence Faithful God, shower the world with your lovingkindnesses, that all may know your peace. Open our eyes to the needs of our neighbors, that all may know your love. omfort the sick and dying, that all may know your mercy. Guide the leaders of our nation in the way of truth, that all may know your justice. Focus our hearts, our minds and our spirits on the way of the cross, that all may have faith in you. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 11

I thank you, heavenly Father, through Jesus hrist, your dear Son, that you have graciously protected me today; and I ask you to forgive me all my sins and the wrong which I have done. By your mercy, graciously protect me from the dangers of this night. Into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. et your holy angels watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen. Go in peace. Thanks be to God. 13
