THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK SUNDAY, 28 TH OCTOBER, 2018 THEME: PRAYING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL READINGS: I KINGS 3:3-14; PSALM 31; 1 JOHN 5:13-15; JOHN 16: One out of the many other reasons why we have unanswered prayers is praying without recourse to the will of God. Prayer is basically talking to God in the name of Jesus Christ through the power and promptings of 6. IS YOUR SEAT EMPTY? Once upon a time the king of evil spirits gathered his followers together to hear reports of their work. Now, my good spirit, began their master, what have you done today to weaken the kingdom of God? We have been busy today making empty seats in churches began one. Nothing could please me better Answered their king. I persuaded one man that he had headache. I kept him from hearing a sermon that might have changed his whole life said one. I induced one good man to slip to his store and fix his books, said another Good said the king. He ll soon give up the church attendance altogether. I worried a good sister about her old head tie and she decided to stay home until she got a new one, spoke up the spirit called Pride And made several poor women stay home even though they were hungry for God s Word. I just told them they were too poor to wear fine clothes so why go where rich people will look down on them. That is one of the best ways to cheat poor people out of the blessing of God, answered the king with approval I induced a good many men and women to think they were too sickly to go out, said one spirit call indifference. Of course all these men will be at their business tomorrow, even if they feel worse. Very good said the king with a grin. I m the weather spirit, said one gloomy fellow. I go around telling people it is going to rain, or it is too cold, too damp, or too hot to venture out to church. It is enough to make you laugh when you see these same people out the next day in wind and weather. That is what we want, Said the king. I make people travel at weekends said another spirit. Then they miss the Sunday morning service and lose its blessing. I also arrange important family meetings or emergency social gatherings which they are duty bound to attend. I have a better plan, Said a spirit named Procastination. When people begin to prepare for the services, I just tell them they can go another day. What does it matter if they rest at home? So, day after day, they continue to postpone their attendance and thus keep their seats regularly vacant. I think my own is the best, said another spirit I usually arrange special visitors for stubborn church goers just when they are about to leave home for the services. And so, whether they like it or not they sit down at home to entertain visitors and miss the day s sermon and blessing. But it may please the devil to know that no visitor can prevent these people from going to work on other days. You are doing fine my boys continued the king of evil spirit Preachers may work and pray over their sermons all week, but there will be no results in preaching to empty seats. Your plans are excellent, but I want to suggest some other good points. All preachers have human imperfections, some fault of manner of speech. Get Christian to criticize their pastors, especially before their children. If you stir up quarrels and a spirit of fault-finding among the members they will help to keep the seats empty. Has Satan been working his plan on you? Is your seat in church usually empty? Has he kept you away from services where you can hear God loves you and that Christ died for You? Attending Church services cannot save you from sin. But the preacher can show you how to trust the Lord Jesus Christ and let Him into your life. We all need to come together and fellowship with other Christian (Hebrews 10:25). We need to worship, study God s word and pray together to help one another. Don t let your SEAT BE EMPTY! Be a committed Christian in Christ Jesus. GOD BLESS YOU AS YOU DO SHALLOM. 19.

Sowing in the morning ; Sowing seeds of kindness Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eves; Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves Bringing in the sheaves; Bringing in the sheaves We shall come rejoicing; Bringing in the sheaves 2. Sowing in the sunshine, Sowing in the shadows Fearing neither clouds nor winter s chilling breeze; By and by the harvest, and the labour ended We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves Bringing in the sheaves; Bringing in the sheaves We shall come rejoicing; Bringing in the sheaves 3. Go then ever, weeping; Sowing for the Master Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves; When our weeping s over, He will bid us welcome We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves Bringing in the sheaves; Bringing in the sheaves We shall come rejoicing ; Bringing in the sheaves 18. the Holy Spirit. It is not possible to be filled with the Holy Spirit and pray amiss because as our senior partner He assists us in everything including our prayer life going as far as helping our infirmities because we do not know how to pray aright. Rom. 8:26. It is equally not possible to please the Lord and pray against His will and since without faith we cannot please God either, it goes to say that whenever a man of faith prays in line with God s will his prayers are ultimately answered. Heb. 11:6. WHAT IS THE WILL OF GOD God s will is His purpose, plan, agenda, thoughts and blueprint for our lives, This is certainly always ever different from man s will Jer. 29:11; Isaiah 55:9.. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD S WILL According to Romans 12:1-2 God s will is: 1. Good 2. Acceptable 3. Perfect WHERE DO WE FIND GOD S WILL The Bible in its entirety is the will of God. Whatever is written therein is for our learning as they are written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit which of course explains why God honours His words far above His name. SOLOMON AS A CASE STUDY 1 Kings 3: He prayed for wisdom and an understanding heart. 2. His concern was to judge the people. 3. He did not see the people as his own but as God s people. 4. He desired to be able to distinguish between good and evil. 5. He was humble in his request as he acknowledged his inadequacy to judge. 6. His speech pleased the Lord vs Therefore because Solomon s heart s desire was in line with God s will, God did for him abundantly above what he prayed for based of course on the condition that he sustained his walk with God. Eph. 3:20. 7.
8 PSALM The Psalmist praying in line with God s will did not put his trust in fellow human beings but in the God of heaven and earth vs 1,6. 2. He prayed based on the sake of God s name just as we are expected to ask in the name of Jesus vs He pleaded and prayed not counting his own righteousness but depending on God s mercy vs He counted on the goodness of God thereby invariably acknowledging his own righteousness was like a filthy rag vs 19; Luke 18: JOHN 5: Our belief in the name of JESUS Christ is fundamental to the will of God in Prayer. We must be connected to Jesus Christ for God to answer us. Interestingly the Lord knows those who are His and He expects His own to depart from iniquity for the prayer of a sinner is abominable to God. 2 Tim. 2:19; Prov. 15:8-9. JOHN 16: It is God s will that we should ask. We must not assume that God knows our need and then keep quiet. We must ask in the name of Jesus Christ until our joy is FULL over any given matter. WORTHY OF NOTE 1. Jesus in the garden desired to evade cruxifixion as evident in His prayer stating his wish to have the cup pass over him. He however submitted to God s will and today we are all better for it. 2. Jesus taught us in His prayer THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH as it is in HEAVEN. There is order in heaven because they do not joke with God s will. For order to be in our lives we must submit to God s will. 3. After his first prayer and God s leading, Balaam under the permissive will of God would have lost his life untimely but for his donkey. Num. 22& Hezekiah s prayer for more years contrary to God s earlier message to him was granted as a permissive will. His fifteen added years resulted in the birth of Manasseh who ended up as the worst King ever in Judah. Isaiah 38: I.
