5 The Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida The Rt. Rev. Dabney T. Smith, Bishop th Street East Parrish, FL Phone: (941) Fax: (941) October 2017 Dear Sisters in Christ: Episcopal Church Women Diocese of Southwest Florida As you begin your church planning for 2018, I invite you to revisit the Diocesan Convention theme, WORK, PRAY & GIVE. Work, pray, and give is a phrase from the Catechism response to the question What is the duty of all Christians?, It is, of course, not the full response. The theme and the full response in the Catechism have to do with the missional purpose of spreading the kingdom of God. Working, praying and giving have to do with our Christian duties of living into that mission. We have a healthy number of congregations living vital mission by feeding the underfed, evangelizing in the 21century, dealing with conflict with the Biblical imperative of Peace, and the ongoing work of dismantling racism. Our work does not just happen when we are doing social work or participating in programs. Healing our world happens when people in our parishes engage ministry in their daily lives and when we dedicate our work to the glory of God. The teachings within our diocese and the business of the church, all have to do with working, praying and giving, for the spread of the kingdom of God. There are other kingdoms, or sovereignties not of God, that seek our lives. Spreading God s kingdom is the work of the Church. It is why we are here. Work, Pray, and Give! Faithfully yours, The Rt. Rev. Dabney T. Smith Fifth Bishop of Southwest Florida 5

Dear Episcopal Church Women Friends, I am so excited about what God wants to do with our ladies Ministry! It is the desire of our heart to reach women inside and outside of the church with the love of Jesus, see women grow in their walk with the Lord and apply God s Word to their lives. 16 ALTAR GUILD When we offer ourselves to serve at the altar, we are offering ourselves to God as a living prayer. When you enter your church, all is in readiness. The silent ministry of the Altar Guild has been at work. All the proper vessels, vestments, and hangings are in place. The silver and brass have been polished, and all the linens have been washed and ironed. In some churches the flowers have been arranged. Everything in the sanctuary has been prepared by the Altar Guild. Its members are God s housekeepers. All who perform these chores are devoted to God and are privileged to serve Him. The Diocese is divided into two areas. The Northern area has three Deaneries (Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tampa) and the Southern area has four (Fort Myers, Manasota, Naples, Venice). 20 UNITED THANK OFFERING United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. Grants are awarded annually and must meet the criteria set forth by the United Thank Offering Committee. Grants are submitted to the Bishop s office, reviewed by the committee, and the Bishop writes his recommendation. The ECW Diocesan UTO Director will forward annual UTO dates and criteria for grant information to the churches when it becomes available. The Grant applications and UTO supplies are available on line: United Thank Offering Prayer Source of all creation, all love, all true joy, accept we pray, these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all of life. 21 MISSION & MINISTRY In 2002, Province IV added a chair for Mission & Ministry to their board of directors, and in 2004, our Diocesan Board followed their lead. The purpose of Mission & Ministry arm of our Diocesan ECW is twofold: 1) to raise the awareness of mission work being done throughout the Diocese by serving as a conduit of communication from the local branches to the Diocesan Board, and vice versa; 2) to support one another s mission work through sharing, not only of resources, experience and knowledge, but especially, through prayers. This team includes the respective deanery representatives for Mission & Ministry, as well as the coordinators for youth ministry, scholarship funds and mission projects for our companion diocese, the Dominican Republic; Asian Ministry; and representatives or coordinators of any upcoming ministries, as these arise. 22 Sarah Howell MEMORIAL FUND The Sarah Howell Memorial Fund is a ministry that was created by and administered by the Episcopal Church Women in the Diocese of Southwest Florida. In May 1988 this new ministry was named in memory of Sara Howell, who had served as ECW Diocesan Chair of Christian Social Concerns. Sara had, years before, found herself a single parent with no means of support or any job skills. She met her challenge, entering the workforce and sustaining both herself and her daughter. Encouraging women to fulfill their individual potential through education was important to Sara. The intent and purpose of this ministry is to provide needed financial aid and support to Episcopal women seeking entry or re-entry into the job market. Paramount among those needing assistance are single parents who must support their families as well as older women who need training to return to the workforce. In this challenging economy more women are finding it necessary to advance themselves beyond minimum wage employment by training and education. Most support for the Sarah Howell Memorial Fund is provided by ECW branches through their outreach budgets and also from memorial or recognition gifts. Every dollar given means new life, new vision and hope to an Episcopal woman in need of help, be it your friend, a woman in your church, a neighbor or yourself one day. Each gift from the heart is a true testament of accepting our mission to be women helping women. SARAH HOWELL MEMORIAL FUND PRAYER Heavenly Father, bless we pray for those we strive to help in the memory of our sister, your servant, Sara Howell. Grant them new life and new vision.
