Living in peace marks a person as a disciple of Jesus Christ! We live in peace when: +... God s love fills our lives and overflows to those around us we trust in God s care for us and all His children strong in the Lord, we refuse to let Satan fill us with bitterness, resentment, enmity, and retaliation we willingly follow the Word of Jesus, returning good for evil and living with a forgiving spirit we strive to live peacefully in our families, our community, and our church we look to Scripture for strength in weakness, guidance in problems, and forgiveness for ourselves and our neighbors we look forward to Heaven s perfect unity and peace. 2 Mission of the Month for May: Food For The Poor Direct relief assistance helping the poor in the Caribbean and Latin America Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:34-40 ESV) Food For The Poor is the largest international relief and development organization in the United States. Our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poorest of the poor in 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, our programs provide housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief and micro-enterprise assistance in addition to feeding hundreds of thousands of people each day. Since its inception in 1982, Food For The Poor has provided in excess of $11 billion in aid (more than half of which was provided in the last five years) and has built more than 91,000 housing units for the destitute. In 2013, Food For The Poor constructed 6,808 housing units for families in need of adequate shelter. Total fundraising and administrative costs in 2013 comprised less than 5% of our expenses. More than 95% of all donations go directly to programs that help the poor. Vision Statement Food For The Poor is God's instrument to help the materially poor and to renew the poor in spirit. Our ministry is a reflection of our Lord's unconditional love - a love that surrenders all, that inspires trust and faith, and that embraces all people, regardless of race, status or creed. It is also shaped by our belief that Christ is alive and can be served directly by serving those in greatest need. (MT 25:40) For guidance and to maintain the purity of our mission, we stress the need for regular prayer. Through surrender, service and prayer, we seek a closer union with our Lord. Rev. David A. Mueller will be visiting with us on Sunday, May 4th to preach at both services and to share information during the Sunday Adult Bible Study Class in the ministry of serving the poor. Pastor Mueller has been engaged in ministry that relates the love of Christ to human need in the 49 years of his ordained ministry. He has served the Church agencies, military chaplaincy (retired, US Navy active duty and reserve) as well as congregations of the LCMS, primarily in South Florida. He is a pastoral counselor as well. In his retirement Pr. Mueller continues to serve Christ as a servant of the poorest of the poor in 17 Caribbean-rim countries served by Food for the Poor, begging on their behalf as a speaker of Food for the Poor.

3 Walk to Haiti Challenge Although Haiti is a Caribbean Island nation, it is not a tropical paradise. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Nearly every year Haiti is rocked by an earthquake or pounded by a hurricane. The catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake of January 12, 2010 brought devastation with a death toll of 220,000 and destruction of 250,000 residences plus 30,000 commercial buildings. The tent cities that popped up were rampant with disease, looting, violence, and even more deaths. After the earthquake of 2010 it became apparent that the people of Laotchikit were in desperate need of assistance. In response to this crisis, Haitian Pastor Walta Jean Duliepre CLERCIUS and his wife, following the guidance of Jeremiah 29:11, purchased land to construct a church. Laotchikit was an extremely poor area with no church or other civic structures. Laotchikit homes are very small, and the people are extremely poor. There are no doctors, hospital, electricity, and no jobs. The only water in the Laotchikit area was from a small murky spring. In 2010, Pastor Walta started holding church services under a shelter. Since there are no paved roads, the people walk up to 5 miles on dirt paths to attend church on Sunday. After two years of construction with make-shift tools and donated materials, Pastor Walta started indoor services at The First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Laotchikit in Knowing that education is the key to abolishing poverty, Pastor Walta in cooperation with Lutheran Churches in North Carolina started a school at the In 2013, Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church & Preschool donated funds to hire qualified, trained teachers and recently sent money to purchase a three-wheeled motorcycle to transport food for the school lunches. Although the Laotchikit Church School currently serves about 230 children, there are 1100 children in the area. The boys and girls of Laotchikit are so eager to attend school that they crowd together on crude benches. To raise money for more teachers, this year Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church Sunday School & select Preschool classes are raising support by walking (figuratively) from Hendersonville to the school in Laotchikit (about 1,725 miles). Each child in the Sunday School and participating Preschool classes will have a pedometer, a metered jump rope, and a Passport to log their daily walking and jumping. At school, a measuring wheel is used so groups of students can measure how far the group has walked. Home walking is added to at-school walking with totals posted each week. As the distances are tallied and totaled each week, we are marking on a map how far we have gone and where we have travelled. We also share that information (via ) with the school children in Laotchikit. In 2014, our goal is to increase financial support for the school to lift more children out of the hopeless trap that cripples so many in this poorest country of the Americas. Currently, the school can accommodate only 230 of the 1100 children in Laotchikit. Specific goals include: $28 per child for books $30 per child for shirt, pants, shoes, and belt $1700 per teacher for salary and associated support expenses (security, supervision, transportation, etc.) During the months of June and July, we are also looking to partner with other local Sunday School groups to increase the fundraising potential, concluding our mission project with a Walk to Haiti fundraiser Saturday, August 2nd that will be open to the public. If you would like to sponsor a walker or contribute to this Haitian school project, contact Wendy White ( anna1000@bellsouth.net, phone ) or Pastor Rabon. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the August 2nd fundraiser.

4 From the James family - LCMS Missionaries to Sri Lanka 8 April 2014 Mount Pisgah Lutheran Church 2606 Chimney Rock Rd Hendersonville NC Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings from Chennai, India! It has been an eventful few months and so I am very delinquent in getting this thank you letter off to you. I hope you have been able to keep up with us through our e-newsletter. If so, you understand that we have been in India, studying Tamil language and getting to know the India Evangelical Lutheran Church. Nevertheless, our hope remains to deploy to Sri Lanka soon. We have come this far by our Lord s kindness, which He showers upon us through folks like you. Thank you for your pledge of support for our work. This is not only our work, but you have graciously made it your own work. In Philippians 1:4ff, St. Paul gives thanks to God that the church at Philippi became partners with him in the gospel. So I give thanks to God for your partnership with us. The picture is not of a Sri Lankan elephant, but still, an elephant is an elephant. That is a lot closer than we were when we had the pleasure of visiting with you so many months ago. And, of course, we are not here for elephants. The task is much bigger than that. It is to strengthen the Church in the saving gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Please remember us in your prayers, and continue your support. Blessed Easter to you all! Yours in Christ, Roger B. James Pastor Larry Rabon, Thank You from Haiti I am so happy to receive your mail today. I am so blessed by that. I thank you! Thank you for writing me. You make my day! I am so excited to learn that the church of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church & Preschool has collected enough to purchase the three-wheeled motorcycle that we need in Laotchikit for the Church & School. I thank you for that. I will verify in the account and will let you know if the amount has been successfully wired. We will buy this motorcycle in the name of the church and it will be used for preaching the Gospel of God and for helping the children in the school who live so far from the church. The picture of the motorcycle will be taken and report about it will be sent. We will never forget what you do for the teachers in Laotchikit. With the money that they receive monthly from you, their children go to school and can eat when they are home. I am excited to learn that you are launching our Walk to Haiti adventure within the next few weeks here at your School & Sunday School. I pray that it will be an exciting adventure for our children. I really appreciate that. It goes directly in my heart. Again thank you in capital letters: THANK YOU! In Christ, Walta Jean Duliepre CLERCIUS
