1 December 2017 Vol. 61 No Messianic Prophesies Often in sermons and Bible studies it was mentioned that there are 365 prophesies of Jesus first coming and life on earth. Josh McDowell says in his book, Evidence That Deserves a Verdict, when 48 prophesies are fulfilled the odds against this are 10 to the 157 th power: 250 per minutes = 19 million years X 19 million X 19 million years= 6,859 million years [Page 143-4]. At first I was going to list all 365 prophesies and note their fulfillments. However, soon after starting, I felt this was an effort of futility. I stopped at 48 due to Josh McDowell s recording of the odds against one person fulfilling just forty-eight. You will find the first 48 prophecies and the last two. The following is a list of 50 prophecies from the Jewish scriptures that Jesus fulfilled. Gen. 3:15...Seed of a woman (virgin birth)...luke 1:35, Mt 1:18-20; 2. Gen. 3:15...He will bruise Satan's head...heb. 2:14, 1 Jn. 3:18; 3. Gen. 5:24...Mk. 6:19; 4. Gen. 9: Lu. 3:36; 5. Gen. 12:3...Acts. 3:25,26; 6. Gen. 12:7...Gal. 3:16; 7. Gen. 14:18...Heb. 6:20; 8. Mal. 4:6... Lu. 1: For the full list you can go to this site: St. Paul wrote concerning one prophesy: 17 if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:17 20, ESV) The coming of Christ on Christmas day, His work, suffering, death, and resurrection was not a work of futility. Your faith is not futile as He is RISEN! Your celebration of Christ s coming in the flesh is a celebration of peace and life. Your celebration of Christmas without mas is a celebration in futility. Let this not be the case. Jesus came that you might have life and have it abundantly now and forever! Have a blessed CHRISTmas celebration! Merry CHRISTmas! Yours in Christ, Pastor
2 December 2017 Mission of the Month Lutheran World Relief Mission Affirming God s love for all people, we work with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering. Vision Empowered by God s unconditional love in Jesus Christ, we envision a world in which each person, every community and all generations live in justice, dignity and peace. Values Gratitude We are grounded in profound thankfulness for God s gracious, self-giving love for all humankind, revealed in the redemptive acts of Jesus Christ. Gratitude marks the way we relate to one another and to all creation. Though our experiences vary, we view community as a gift. We give thanks for our wondrous diversity. We celebrate being alive. We abound with joy, hopefulness, hospitality and deep appreciation for the gift of one another (Psalm 136). Calling All people are made in the image of God (Imago Dei, Genesis 1:26, James 3:9) and are human beings of dignity and worth. Each life-course is laden with meaning and purpose as we live out our callings. Working together, our common vocation transforms communities even as it recognizes a unique space for inter- Lutheran and ecumenical relations. As we are attentive to the alignment of our individual, interpersonal and common vocations, we will flourish. Accompaniment God has modeled for us the decisive act of accompaniment in the life of Jesus. By walking along the road and breaking bread with his companions (Luke 24), Jesus met others eye to eye, accessing new horizons for them to construct their future. Similarly, we endeavor to walk and work with partners. As we engage in critical and self-critical reflection and develop cultural competency, we support, encourage and learn together within long-term relationships of trust and reciprocity. Stewardship Both our respect and appreciation for each other and the critical and urgent nature of our mission call us to employ the highest standards in our lives and work. We are not owners; rather we strive to be wise trustees: The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it (Psalm 24:1). Aware of an imbalance and abuse of resources globally, we are compelled toward responsibility, justice and bold investment for the sake of our mission. Innovation As long as our vision remains unachieved, we are restless. We seek relentlessly to learn, adapt, and grow. Our goals are so compelling and human suffering so pervasive that we are unsatisfied with the status quo. With entrepreneurial eyes, we are careful to make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15-16). With creativity, we build new partnerships that strengthen capacities. With imagination, we embrace leadingedge ideas that enhance the quality of our ministry.
