Churchmatters Monthly Newsletter of East Glenville Community Church September 2014 Loving God - Loving People Helping Them Know and Follow Jesus Mark Your Calendar September 2nd Servant Leader Council Meeting September 5th Youth Leader Training Retreat September 7th Kick-Off Sunday Youth Group Resumes September 10th Wednesday Night Program September 19th Men s Retreat September 26th Ellm s Farm Family Day A Word from Pastor Jim In God's wise provision, the Bible passes down to us the life experiences of others so we can learn from what they heard, saw, and did. Truths saved for us so we can benefit from their faith-walk with God. Life lessons from them that help us be God's People today. September 14th we will begin a new teaching series Sunday mornings looking at the Early Christians described in Acts 1-2. We'll explore their life experiences of faith and boost our own walk with Christ. Seeing what they did and learned will open up insights into our fresh Vision Statement of "Loving God, Loving People, Helping Them Know and Follow Jesus" gaining helpful lessons for what our Vision means for us today. I've been studying the passages this summer and am seeing all kinds of connections to our life here. I'm excited to share the study and experience it together. Fall is that time with new routines of school, returns from vacation, and changes in our home schedule. Come and make Sunday morning Sunday School and Worship a part of that new routine.and let's be in prayer for one another as we come to the Lord in His Word each Sunday.

Kick Off Sunday September 7th 9am Everyone is invited to gather in Buchanan Hall for breakfast, celebrations, and introductions to new Sunday School classes for children. youth and adults. 10:30am Worship Service hours resume. 11:45am Picnic on Church Grounds following Service. Food, fun and time together. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Subs and drinks will be provided. Please sign up in the Foyer to bring desserts, salads or side dishes. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Romans 8:30 Elders Our God is a God of New Beginnings. Just consider the book of Genesis: God s creation of man in His image to tend the garden and bear fruit; the fall of man and a new start through Noah; God s promise of a new land and a new nation to bless the earth through Abraham; God s provision of a substitutionary sacrifice for Isaac; Jacob s new identity after his encounter with God; Joseph s reconciliation with his brothers. There are common threads in these examples: faith, grace, and obedience. We who have placed our faith in Christ have been given a new, eternal relationship with God by His grace. We have a new beginning, and we freely choose to live in obedience to Him because of His sacrifice and His promises. Despite our failures, we have the opportunity to begin each day anew by His grace. Praise God! As we kick off a new fall season here at East Glenville, I encourage you to consider the new beginnings God may have in store for you as part of our body. Perhaps a new opportunity to learn more about God and His Word by getting involved in a Sunday School class or Bible study; experiencing deeper friendships by becoming involved in a small group; encouraging a brother or sister who is in need; attending the Men s Retreat; being baptized to make public proclamation of your faith in Christ; finding a new opportunity to serve in our church or in the lives of family, neighbors, or co-workers. My prayers are with you as you consider what God has in store for you. Warmly in Christ, Don Kraines, Elder Dorcas & Flannelgraph Dorcas and Flannelgraph Ministries will resume their activities on September 16th. Flannelgraph begins at 10am and Dorcas at 10:30am. You may contact Carol Versocki at for Dorcas and Ann VanWie at for Flannelgraph. We're always looking for new people to join us. Can you sew, paint, cut or trace? COME ON IN!! 2

CCCC National Conference Report My Impressions (by Pastor Jim) Seven of our congregation attended the 66 th Annual Family Conference of the CCCC in Providence in July. EGCC is one local church who along with three hundred and eight others from across the country comprise the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference (CCCC). Ken and Gail Heckler, Dick and Velma Rhodenizer, Pastor Phil and Bonita Sears and myself joined over five hundred other pastors, chaplains, and lay leaders in three days of worship, teaching, helpful workshops, mission reports and business actions. This being my first CCCC national meeting, all was new to me, and I came away impressed with the heart of our Conference for Christ, His Word and the Mission of the Church. In Tuesday morning's session, I was one of those welcomed whose ordination credentials are moving to the CCCC. The credential process over the winter has gotten me connected with other Conference pastors in our area. This is actually one of the national goals of reengaging our local pastors into small groups for collegial support and encouragement. I am looking forward to being involved in one of these groups within our Hudson Valley area starting this Fall. East Glenville has a long history with the CCCC and it s a valuable fit I think as we share our ministry and mission of Jesus Christ. Want to know more about the Providence Conference? See Ken, Gail, Dick, Velma, Pastor Phil or Bonita and ask them! Want to know more about the CCCC in general? Check their website at and the new CCCC page on our own website Some Added Impressions (by Pastor Phil) We were refreshed, spiritually uplifted, encouraged and challenged to focus on ministry and to be in prayer for church multiplication. It was compelling to hear the reports of churches that the Lord is causing exponential growth because of Biblical principles applied with a drive for believing that the Lord wants to grow His church. We were continually reminded that the work of the Church is the Lord's ministry and we are his helpers. The fellowship with others in our association and to meet some new couples to engage with and pray for. Praise the Lord!! Some Added Impressions (by Ken Heckeler) As one who attended the 66th Annual Family Conference of the Conservative Congregational Conference, I want to share with you what Ed Seltzer had to tell us. He preached and spoke on the word Everyone. This is from I Peter 4: It applies to all of us. 1. Everyone is gifted (I Peter 4:10) 2. Everyone is to minister (I Peter 4:10) 3. Everyone is empowered (I Peter 4:11) 4. Everyone brings glory (I Peter 4:11) Ministry is not just the duty of the Senior Pastor and the Assistant Pastor; it is not just the responsibility of the Elders and Deacons; it belongs to Everyone. We are all ministers and God has equipped everyone to bring Him Honor and Glory. What has God called you to do? Are you using the gifts He had given you? He has empowered you to minister to your family, your friends, your neighbors. God has called Everyone. There are no exceptions. This is not a spectator s sport. God has included you. Here we are at lunch on Wednesday photo by Pastor Jim 3

Youth Group Welcome Travis Phillips to EGCC Staff We are pleased to welcome Travis Phillips as the new Director of Student Ministries. Unanimously affirmed by congregational vote at the business meeting July 29th, he assumes the Student Ministries role open since Nathan Caldwell left this spring to enter Denver Seminary and prepare for the missions field. Travis is leading the volunteer team ministering with our middle and high school youth and will be extending our discipleship efforts to our college and career age adults. His title will shift to the planned Director of Family Ministries when that position is added to the Church Bylaws at the January Annual Meeting. The longer vision for the position includes more comprehensive efforts by Travis and others with our younger families as we live out our Vision of "Loving God, Loving People, Helping Them Know and Follow Jesus". We are glad Travis is among us and ask you to pray as he transitions into this new role. Give him an encouraging welcome, and find out more about Travis at I am excited for this month of September. Youth Sunday School kicks off September 7th at 9am Weekly Youth Group kicks off September 7th from 6:30-8:30pm Wednesday Night Youth Bible Study starts September 17th Thursday Night Basketball resumes in October Beginning this September, EGCC will be introducing a new Sunday School curriculum for our children and youth. We are very excited about the transition to The Gospel Project and hope you will support and pray for us as we implement the program. Sunday mornings will be an exciting time of large group and small group worship, prayer and study. One of the many strengths of The Gospel Project is that it will help our children and youth understand how all Scripture testifies to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, The Gospel Project will help us see that Jesus isn t just part of the Biblical story; He s the point of the Biblical story. Here is what we can expect from The Gospel Project. The Gospel Project will help them grasp the grand story of the Bible by tracing major themes and essential doctrines throughout all of Scripture. The Gospel Project will help them understand and apply the Gospel of Jesus Christ by exploring implications for life in every session. The Gospel Project will help move them to mission by demonstrating proper responses to what God has done for us in Christ. Expect to see more details to follow on the EGCC Youth Group Facebook page. -Travis Phillips 4

Worship Ministries Five Reasons to Join the Choir! 1. Singing in the choir gives me an opportunity to express my love for the Lord. 2. Singing in the choir is more than a hobby or an activity. It is a calling. 3. Singing in the choir allows me to participate in the overall ministry of leading in worship, which is a joy and a privilege. 4. Singing in the choir is a great opportunity to find fellowship and get to know other like minded believers. The choir functions like a large 'small group' who encourage, support, and pray for one another. 5. Singing in the choir allows me to participate in something that is so much bigger than my self! The EGCC Worship Choir is open to anyone Grade 9 Adult. Choir rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from 7pm 8:30pm. You're welcome to come to our kick-off on September 10th, check us out, and see if this might be a good place for you to serve. If you're not able to commit to the whole year come and join us for a season. For more information contact Sandie at worship@egcchurch.org. Worship Team The Worship Team is currently looking for experienced musicians who play guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), drums, and keyboard. Individuals serve on a rotating basis and commit to spiritual growth as well as musical excellence. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings at 7pm, and Sunday mornings at 7:45 am and a team Bible Study is held once a month. Membership is by audition. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ who has a worshiping heart, musical skills, and desire to be part of a dynamic worship team, we'd love to speak with you! Contact Sandie at worship@egcchurch.org. Christmas Musical Kick-Off This year's Christmas musical will be presented on Friday night December 12th, and Sunday night December 14th. Rehearsals will begin at the Kick-Off on Sunday afternoon October 6th at 4:30pm in the sanctuary and will continue from 4:30-5:55pm October through November. The Choir is open to all in Grade 8 through Adult. Participating in the Musical is a wonderful way to get to know others in the church and take part in one of our major community outreach ministries. You are also welcome to invite family and friends to join us. There will be a sheet on the bulletin board in the Foyer to sign up for the Musical Choir. Along with the Choir there are other ways to be a part of this outreach. The Drama and Tech Teams will also be looking for people to serve with them. See Marty Glynn or Pat Daly or contact Sandie at worship@egcchurch.org for more information. 6

Specifically, we truly enjoy the time we spend together~ singing, enunciating, praying, building godly relationships, and having fun! Fun; but with a specific purpose: to teach and lead boys and girls into a lifestyle of praise and worship as they grow in their knowledge of Jesus, the One who gives them a reason to sing! 8 Changes in Adult Sunday School With new children and youth Sunday School schedules, there are new beginnings in the Adult Classes too. Below are the listings of the adult offerings that start in September. Which one will you be joining? As you pray and decide some added thoughts: The heart of the Elder and Christian Education Boards is to provide classes that develop our fresh church Vision. These Fall classes are the first steps in a revised Adult Curriculum designed to provide the skills and knowledge that go with being a Follower of Jesus Christ. You'll be seeing ahead a steady shift in topics with a deliberate emphasis on "learning to do" and "informing to decide". We want to provide our adults a purposeful path that helps them mature in their faith in Christ. Have you been a part of adult Sunday School before? Great! Come and learn, encourage the others who are new, and see how you can help somebody else learn what others taught you. Is adult Sunday School a new thing for you? Great! You're in a church that wants to come alongside you and provide what you need to "Know and Follow Jesus". Kick-off Sunday is September 7th at 9am. See you there! Kingdom Living (20-30 yr old singles and couples) - Led by Greg & Susie Bandy - Classroom BH1 This fall we will look at the Bible itself and skills that will enhance our understanding of the Lord and our faith. There is a first-hand joy that comes from growing in our faith. The beauty of the Scriptures are unlocked as we understand them. Despite your reading skills, we will look at ways to see what God's Word really says, how to better understand what it means, and find relevant ways to help us follow Jesus. The Holy Spirit works with us - to grow us - to enliven us - as we let God use His Word to transform our minds, inspire our hearts, and improve our relationships. Please join us to stoke your own desire to follow Christ Jesus as we learn how to study the Bible. "How to Use My Bible" - Led by Tom Bischoff - Preschool Room A Observations, looking to see what it says, noting the verbs and grammar, asking it questions and finding its answers are all techniques to help us more comfortably read and graps the message of the Bible. This is a perfect group to learn how to navigate in its pages. So if your Bible is a new thing to you you are heartily welcomed! Or if is something you've grown more ease with already, this is the place to add some fresh skills and particularly see how you could help someone else develop their techniques too. Come and be a part. Big Picture of the New Testament - Led by Will Gideon & Robb Marshall - Preschool Room B One of the ways that God has revealed Himself to us is through His written Word. This survey class will be highly interactive. If you have not spent much time in the New Testament then this class is for you as we will spend time exploring the big picture of the New Testament and what it means to us today. If you have read the New Testament many times, then this class is for you too as we will spend time examining how we might use our knowledge of the New Testament to help those in need around us. Hope you can join us! 8

EGCC Preschool We are getting excited about another new year with many different children and families attending preschool. As this year begins, we ask for your prayers for wisdom, peace strength and good health. We also ask prayer for the families and children coming, that there would be an easy adjustment and that they would see Jesus in our work, love and commitment. Lastly, prayers are asked for those who may still be considering attending. We have openings in our 3 year old class and our 4-year-old afternoon class. This is the first time in 25 years that we have only one 3 year old class. Please pray for more 3 s as this affects our staff for this year as well as our classes for next year. As always, we thank you for your support and prayers. ~ Linda Wachtel, EGCC Pre-School Director Preschool 50th Anniversary Celebration 9

Women s Bible Study Opportunities: Watch for Special Women s Events to Come this Fall! The Women s Ministry Team is excited to list several interesting Bible Studies that will be starting up in the Fall. There are many choices of meeting times as well as many very interesting topics. Please consider joining in one. Not only is it a great opportunity to explore God s Word in a deeper way, but also to grow closer in relationships with other women in the church. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact one of the leaders. Wednesday Morning 9am 11am A study specifically for mothers of young children. Meets at the church (Sunday School Rooms) beginning October 1st. Babysitting is available. The workbook is $12 and homework is assigned but not mandatory. (Please note the time that the change for the Thursday morning study is a change from prior years). Contact Donna Williams / gadwilly@verzion.net with any questions. Thursday Afternoon: 1 2pm Meets at the Church in Classroom 2 or 3. This group is focusing on the Book of Acts. Last year they had members and they are ready to welcome any newcomers. After the study is done at 2pm, many stay to sing a few hymns and to pray for one another as well as for the church. No homework is required. There is no childcare. This group helps support missionary Paul Holt and a basket is available for any donations at each meeting. All you need to bring is a Bible. The group is led by Nancy Snyder. Contact Ann Van Wie with any questions. Friday Morning: 9am This study is designed for middle-aged moms. Meetings are every two weeks and meet at member s homes. Being a mom of teenagers and young adults is challenging. This is a great opportunity to connect with other moms facing similar circumstances. A study book has not been chosen yet, but will surely be something to help in you every day walk with Christ. Typically, each member purchases a copy of the book and members take turns leading the study. They meet from September to May. Contact Brenda Mills at for further information. Men's Midweek Group Wednesday Nights (7-8:30pm) - Classroom 3 Juggling Chainsaws on a Tightrope Men have to juggle dozens of responsibilities - all while walking a treacherous tightrope demanding spiritual and physical balance. But in Christ we can do this! This is the study of a Biblical approach to thriving under pressure. Let's find together the ways to live in Christ with those connections we have - home, family, work and church. This is an ideal group for men not used to being in men's Bible discussion groups. Come casual, come with questions, come wanting real life faith. 10

Missions Conference Update - Coming in October So far we have the following planned: Perline and Bruce Cooper, prior missionaries in Madagascar, will share their experiences currently with the Malagasy Christians in Canada on October 15th at Wednesday evening Bible study. John Morris will be our featured speaker for the weekend of October 18th - 19th. John grew up at EGCC and came to Christ in his early years here. He then chose ministry and is now a member of three generations of ministers. He is on the mission field using the web largely for teaching and lecturing regarding discipleship. He will join us for both Sunday School and Worship on October 19th as well as give a talk on the Old Testament and how it connects to the Great Commission Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30pm. All are invited to attend and prior sign-ups will be encouraged. A potluck luncheon following Sunday Worship will feature more from the summer missionary training experience of our youth. We are excited and looking forward to a spirit filled, inspiring weekend. Active Missionaries Joe & Tamara Hill The Hill's are long standing supported missionaries of EGCC. This dynamic couple were leaders in recent years for one of our missionary conferences and came to be known by our congregation as prayer and its benefits were the featured topics that year. The Hills are sponsored by the Pioneers, a missionary agency located in Orlando, Florida. Joe and Tamara, however, are located in Arizona where their ministry extends into Mexico as well as with the native American peoples known as the Tarahumaras. These native Americans are coming to Christ through training among their own peoples via the teams which Joe and Tamara lead. The women are also blessed by our own Dorcas group who provide quilts to expectant mothers as a means for them to adhere to prenatal care and sound medical practices. There are numerous pictures which Tamara sends to show the joy on their faces when the quilts are received. Joe Hill is a much respected teacher and mentor to the Tarahumara leaders. Please pray for the Hills and their continued ability to maintain good health and the Lord's work amongst the Tarahumara tribes. God Bless you, Joe and Tamara! 12

Retired Missionaries Ruth Gibbs Over many years I have been blessed to be one of the missionaries you all have had a part in supporting. This has always been a blessing in our family, and we have appreciated and thanked the Lord for your support and interest. We had joined the Sudan Interior Mission and were appointed to the country of Dahomey, now known as Benin. It was 1962 when my husband, Alan Gibbs, and I were in the process of raising our support to go to Benin when we visited EGCC and met you. In 1963 we began our overseas journey. After a few stops, the Lord opened an opportunity for us youth ministry. We moved to the coastal city of Cotonou where we were able to have Bible Studies and Sunday Services with an already established group of young people. We had gotten nicely settled in and were thankful for the many who would come in to hear God s Word. Several months later, Alan had to attend a West Africa Youth Leaders Conference in the country of Niger. On his way home, first by plane, then by train, there was an accident. Instead of arriving home in Cotonou, the Lord took him to his heavenly home via the train accident. This was truly a shock to all of us. The young men in the youth group helped keep the center open, the Lord sent us a young man from the French Bible School in Niamey to take over leadership of the group. I stayed on until that next June when our furlough was due. That gave us time to have a smooth transition, and two of our five children were able to finish their year in boarding school where they were attending in Nigeria. The next steps were to know where the Lord would be leading us next. There were also needs for teachers in our mission boarding school in Nigeria. So, I inquired about changing location and going to Nigeria to Kent Academy where my children would attend and I would also be able to teach. Over the next twelve years, my ministries at the school were teaching music, home economics, and French. This took us through 1988, when my 4 th child graduated from High School and the 5 th one was in High School. We also had a furlough at this time. I began to feel as though the Lord was leading me into another change in our lives. So again, I inquired about what this change would be, and where it could be. There was a need in the home office for someone to head up a program for candidate s children who would be going overseas with their parents. This would take place during candidate orientations at SIM headquarters which would be three times a year. Would I be interested in doing this? Yes! Retirement came in During these past couple of years, I have been active in the music ministry in our church, have taught classes in AWANAS, and have also taught English as a second language to people have immigrated to the U.S. A great opportunity to share God s Word! All five of my children are married. There are now 12 grandchildren. Three of the five families live in the area I do, one in California and one in Georgia. The Lord has blessed us all and they are serving Him in various occupations. My daughter, Heidi, and her husband Jay Tolar had to return to the States from Nigeria. Jay has ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and has slowly becoming more helpless. Pray for them during this time of difficulty. They have two children. Also this past year, I was found to have cancer and have gone through surgery and radiation treatments. That has slowed me down some. But thank the Lord, I am up and about and still get out and do things. Thank you again for your love, care and support. Blessings on all of you there at East Glenville. In His love, Ruth Gibbs 359 Mulberry Village Lane Fort Mill, SC Ruth.gibbs@sim.org 13
