You want a more abundant life? Confirm Jesus as Your Friend!

John 10:10b I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m, I was watching a biography on Joseph Scriven who wrote What a Friend we have in Jesus. Joseph Scriven was a man who Loved the Lord. At a young age, Scriven had meet a woman and they had feel in love and the were going to get married. On the day of their wedding, they each were to meet up but on her way to meet him. As she came up to a creak, her horse got spoked and tossed her and she flew off the horse into the riverbed striking her head upon a rock and drowned. As he arrived upon the scene, Scriven s saw people taking her body out of the water. After this tragedy he wanted to get away and start a new life, so he left his home in Ireland and went to Canada. He felt lead of the Lord to show the Love of Jesus to help whoever he came across. Each day he would go out to the roads and help widows and elderly woman and others. Offered help to whomever asked. He had come to be known by the towns people as the Good Samaritan on the side of the road. Years laters Scriven s meet another woman he fell in love with and planned to marry. As they approached their marriage date, she got sick with pneumonia. Despite his caring for her day and night for many days, she died. Once again, Scriven s had felt the loss of a one he loved, but got him through each time was his relationship with the Lord Jesus. He knew Jesus was his friend and helped him each time get through his heartache and pain, carried his burdens and saw him through it. So one day he wrote a poem: What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear; May we ever, Lord, be bringing All to Thee in earnest prayer. Soon in glory bright, unclouded, There will be no need for prayer Rapture, praise, and endless worship Will be our sweet portion there. He wrote this poem in 1855 that had been anonymously published and became really popular, it wasn t until two years later did he reveal that the song sung in many Church s had been a poem he had written. This song is still one of the most popular songs sung in Church today. If you listen to the words Scriven s wrote, it s evident that he not only read John 15:13-16, he believed it and put it in his heart. Now, obviously he went through some suffering, some turmoil, struggles and conflicts having suffered some heart wrenching losses. However, through and by Be A Friend of Jesus 2

his faith in Jesus, Scriven s came through it, holding on to Jesus. Let s compare John 15:13-16 to Scriven s poem John 15: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Vs : Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Scriven s learned through needless suffering in himself, that he believed that Jesus loved him and therefore was his friend and all he needed to do was believe His friend and accept His offering to boldly but humbly go to the Throne of Grace to obtain grace and mercy as he needed. (Heb. 4:16). He did and found that his Friend Jesus offering was true. He then realized he had been forfeiting peace within himself by carrying his troubles all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Vs Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Scriven s came to realize his friend Jesus made known to him that in this life you will have trials and tribulations but our Friend Jesus has overcome them for us and would share in our sorrows, if we bring it to Him in pray. John 16:33 33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Scriven s recalled in his spirit 1 John 4:4 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Be A Friend of Jesus 3

Oh, how Scriven s recalled what his friend Jesus told him, Come to me all you that labour and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. -Matt. 11:28. Scriven s believed that seeking the presence of God would give him rest. Ex. 33:14 The Lord replied, My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. Scriven s recalled Phil. 4:6 and how if he took his wearied, cares and burdens to God, how his friend Jesus would give him peace. Phil. 4:6 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Most of all, Scriven s remembered what Peter said about our friend Jesus, 1 Pet. 4:6-7 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Scriven s poem is an outline for us of what having a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus and the Father. In our relationship of being a friend of Jesus, we are given life, and life more abundantly. What does our fried Jesus mean when He tells us in John 10:10b I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Have it is the word ἔχω echō; to hold one's self to a thing, to lay hold of a thing, to adhere or cling to; to be closely joined to a person or a thing. The phrase was most commonly used of those joined to another by bonds of natural blood or marriage or friendship or duty. Abundantly περισσός perissos; superfluous (supper added, extraordinary); a sense of beyond So, what Jesus is saying to us, is that, in our friendship with Him, He is bond to us in the giving of us a supper added, extraordinary, sense of beyond this mere life. He gives us access to the spiritual realm to the Throne of Grace access to heavenlies Eph. 2:6: And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: Be A Friend of Jesus 4

Eph. 3: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. When we make Jesus our friend, our lives are supercharged with Spiritual life, that s life more abundantly! Be A Friend of Jesus 5
