1 First United Methodist Church Newsletter APRIL, 2014 Volume 18, Number 4 Rev. Dr. Kenton D. Van, Pastor SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30 Message from the Pastor As everyone has probably heard, First UMC Fort Scott will have a new pastor as of July 1 st. His name is Steven Cole. Pastor Steve is coming to Fort Scott from the Girard and Farlington United Methodist Churches. This, of course, is a change in leadership for our congregation. Change, as someone said, is the only constant in life. There are a couple of things each of us can do during this transition period. The biggest one is to pray. Pray for the congregation. Pray for the new pastor. Pray for the ministries of our congregation. Pray for our community. Pray for welcoming hearts. Another thing is to continue to work hard at the ministries we have. Do not let the transition time slow us down. Keep charging ahead full speed! The last thing is to pray for Connie and me. We deeply appreciate all you have been to us and done for us. During these last couple of months together, we appreciate your prayers for they help and sustain us during the transition we are going through. Finally, remember that God is with you on this journey. God will sustain us if we will open our hearts, our minds and our lives. May God give us deep peace during this transition time. Grace and Peace, Ken Mission Statement The mission of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Scott, Kansas, is to share the good news of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to exemplify the love of God by knowing Christ, growing in Christ, serving Christ and sharing Christ. First United Methodist Church 301 S. National, Fort Scott, KS (620)

5 COMING UP - SUMMER CHURCH CAMPS Swimming, worship, horseback riding, Bible study, paddle boats, low ropes, crafts, archery and more can all be experienced at Camp Chippewa's Faith & Fun camps this summer for children going into 4th - 8th grade. Other camping choices include overnight camps with parents for grades K-3; three-day mini camps; theme camps for grades 4-12 focused around art, stars, horses, ropes, or water-sports; camps for special needs campers; counselors-in-training camps and the UM Youth Institute for high school students. Cost varies based on the camp chosen. Faith and Fun camps are $260 after a $20 discount for registrations that are in by April 15th and a $10 discount for registering on-line. Several of our children are planning on attending one of the 3rd - 5th grade Faith & Fun camps during late June. Call Stacy Wood at for details and questions. Camping brochures can be obtained by going on-line at campchippewa.org or from the church office. If you would like to help defray the cost of an incredible opportunity for our children to know Christ, grow in Christ and share Christ in a new and exciting setting, donations can be ear-marked for "camp scholarships". Sunday Cafe Have you noticed? If you come to worship a little early and check out the southwest entrance to the sanctuary, you now have a chance to mingle with people you may see only at church and pick up a snack. There s a sign-up sheet at the table on Sundays and on top of the mail boxes across from the office during the week for those who would like to help with snacks. Stop by and say hi. DO YOU REMEMBER? The Next Steps Team and the Administrative Board have worked to define both the mission of Fort Scott First United Methodist Church and its focus for this next year. Our hope is that the mission and its shorter motto will become part of the hearts of each person in our congregation as we individually and collectively grow in Christ. Ponder how you are already living the mission as well as where there are additional opportunities to support our mission. You will notice numerous reminders of our mission in bulletins, on walls, in sermons, in Sunday school classes, on the web site and right here in our newsletter. Stop now and see if you can remember our motto. Think you have it? Check below. *Mission: The mission of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Scott, Kansas, is to share the good news of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to exemplify the love of God by knowing Christ, growing in Christ, serving Christ and sharing Christ. *Motto: Know Christ, Grow in Christ, Serve Christ, Share Christ * Focus: Increase involvement of children and youth for the purpose of sharing Christ s love with them and their families. During our April Next Steps meeting we will be talking about what our team and church have done so far, where we are going, how we are getting there and how we can accomplish our mission and focus. Our coach, Rev. Patrick Broz, will be leading this session. Anyone who is interested is welcome to sit in on the meeting in the parlor on April 25th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Submitted by Connie Van

6 Meet Maxine Rimbey Submitted by Jan Hedges Maxine Alford Rimbey was born near Buffalo, Missouri on July 15, Her parents were Tom and May Smith Alford. She had one brother Buell who was six years younger. She grew up on a farm but never learned to milk a cow. Her dad didn t want women doing farm work. She did help with the chickens and in the garden. Her father primarily raised cattle. Maxine attended a one-room school for first through eighth grade. At times there were only ten students in the school and she was often in a grade by herself. She attended Buffalo High School and graduated in With the war, her class shrunk from in the 70 s her freshman year to 28 her senior year. Many of the boys volunteered in the war and girls went to work in factories. After graduation, Maxine went to Missouri University for one year and the next year she attended South Western Baptist. Her intent was to become a Home Extension agent. She had to take 20 hours of chemistry and science before she could ever take a foods class. She laughingly says she used all those science classes on her husband. Maxine first knew about Lee Roy Rimbey when he was engaged to her college roommate. The engagement did not last and Lee joined the army in He grew up near Urbana, Missouri on a dairy farm. He was big in FFA and was a Missouri Star Farmer. During the war, Lee was in the infantry and was in the battalion that freed the prisoners at Dachau. Lee was discharged in Maxine and Lee were introduced to each other by friends in Urbana in They were married on September 18, Lee died June 18, Maxine and Lee were married 67 years. Lee and Maxine lived in Kansas City for about two years while Lee was enrolled in the School of Horology, watchmaking and jewelry making. They then moved to Iowa City, Iowa where Lee did his apprenticeship and worked at Hands Jewelry for about a year. They moved to Fairfield, Iowa to work in his brother-in-law s jewelry store. In 1951, they opened their own store in Buffalo, Missouri. In the fall of 1962, they moved to Pittsburg and Lee worked at the Al Williams Jewelry Store. During this time Maxine was the office manager for Pitt Craft, a printing company. The family came to Fort Scott in March of 1969 and opened Rimbey Jewelry. Maxine worked with Lee at the store until they closed the business at the end of December of As she said, when you have a mom and pop store you do everything from cleaning to accounting to buying and selling. The Rimbeys have four children: Gary and Evelyn were born in Iowa, Nancy in Buffalo, MO and Peggy in Pittsburg, KS. Peggy is the youngest by 14 years and often says she had five parents growing up. Gary is retired and lives in Frontenac, KS; Evelyn lives in Denver and has two daughters Courtney and Brittany. Nancy died of cancer in Peggy lives in Fort Scott and works as a social worker for Pathways in Missouri. She has two children Nolan attending Kansas State University and Karley attending Kansas University. Maxine also has one great grandchild, Roco. Cross-stitching, cross word puzzles and reading are Maxine s favorite hobbies. During the years, she was active with PTA, church circles and Business Professional Women (BPW). When the children were home, Maxine and Lee took them on a trip every two years. Travels included trips to Colorado, Black Hills, Yellowstone National Park, Niagara Falls and Disneyland. After they closed the store and retired Maxine and Lee took several bus trips with favorites being ones to Washington D.C. and a Colorado trains trip. Maxine grew up in the Baptist Church, taught Sunday school class and played the piano. She said the children would often request that she play The Old Rugged Cross or What a Friend We Have in Jesus. They are still favorites for her. She started going to the Methodist Church when she was in college. She and Lee joined First United Methodist Church when they moved to Fort Scott. As far as special events or memories, Maxine is proud of the new entryway to the church. It makes it so much easier for people to be dropped off and use the elevator if they need it. She and Lee especially enjoyed being in the M & M Homebuilders class where they made many friends and had good fellowship. Her hope for the church is that we can get young people to come to the church. We need younger people.
