2 NOTE FROM The Pastor Dear Parishioners, Lent is training. Training for discipleship. It is training for Heaven, ultimately. St. Teresa of Avila said in Heaven, No one will have any worries, but each person will have a calmness and a glory within. Each person will experience great gladness in seeing how much others are rejoicing. They will experience perpetual peace and a wonderful inner satisfaction that comes from seeing perfect moral goodness in everyone in Heaven. There, everyone praises the Lord and blesses His Name and no one offends Him. Everyone loves Him there. They cannot stop loving God because they know Him [so differently than we do on earth.] (The Way of Perfection, 30). In Heaven there is a penetrating and profound happiness. We have a faint sense of this happiness because we have tasted happiness in our lives. However, we have never experienced the overwhelming happiness that the souls in Paradise feel. If we did experience this happiness for a few moments, our lives here on earth would change drastically. We would sacrifice everything in order to ensure that we eventually go to Heaven. St. Thomas Aquinas points out that a certain participation of happiness can be had in this life, but perfect and true happiness cannot be had in this life. (Summa Theologiae, I-II, 3). Why not? Because happiness by definition is not a feeling. It is perfect good that is totally satisfying because it is totally sufficient. It excludes every evil, and fulfills every desire. But in this life every evil cannot be excluded. For in this present life there are many unavoidable evils: such as ignorance of mind, disordered affections and unruly passions, bodily imperfections and sickness. Aquinas explains that our unlimited desire for good cannot be satisfied in this life. We seem to always want more. Humans naturally desire that the good we have be lasting. But the good things of the present life pass away since life itself passes away. We have been created by God to be forever happy. This love of happiness, this yearning for it, which every one of us feels in his heart, will never be destroyed, not even in Hell. There s a famous story of Blessed Jordan of Saxony, one of the first generals of the Dominican Order, who died in Once, during an exorcism, Jordan asked the Devil, in the person of the one who was possessed, what was the principal torment of Hell. He answered: Being excluded from the presence of God. Jordan asked further: How great is His beauty? Satan answered, You re a fool to put such a question to me! Don t you know that His beauty is beyond compare? Jordan then asked, Can t you suggest any comparison that may give me at least an idea of the Divine beauty? Then Satan said: Imagine a crystal sphere a thousand times more brilliant than the sun, in which is combined the loveliness of all the colors of the rainbow, the fragrance of every flower, the sweetness of every delicious flavor, the costliness of every precious stone, the kindliness of men and the attractiveness of all the angels. Fair and precious as this crystal would be, in comparison with the divine beauty, it would be ugly and impure. Then Bl. Jordan asked, What would you give to be admitted to the vision of God? And the Devil replied: If there were a pillar reaching from earth to Heaven, with sharp points and nails and hooks, I would gladly consent to be dragged up and down that pillar from now until the Day of Judgment, if I could only be permitted to gaze upon God s face for a few brief moments. 3 Sacred Heart If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. Sacred Heart School is a West Brighton fixture with a rich history of academic and athletic success. The school currently has an enrollment of 262 students all of whom are inspired and educated in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergarten eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcoming events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competitive, they win! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. Stations of the Cross: During the Fridays of Lent, Sacred Heart will have Stations of the Cross at 7:30 PM beginning on Friday, March 8th. Orellana 2019 Cardinal s Appeal: The annual Cardinal s Stewardship Appeal has commenced and Sacred Heart s goal has been set at $74,500. Many parishioners have already received mail regarding the appeal and we ask that you be as generous as your means will allow. Sacred Heart has consistently met its goal every year and we thank our parishioners for their support. We now stand at approximately 84 % of our goal. Lenten Regulations: Lent began on Wednesday, March 6th and ends on Holy Thursday, April 18. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fasting means only one full meal may be taken that day. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength but the two together must not equal one full meal in quantity. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Catholics ages are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. Abstinence forbids the eating of meat and poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays during lent. This obligation is operative throughout life. Olive Wood Products: Representatives from Catholic Bethlehem Families will be with us on the weekend of April 13th & 14th. Due to recent events in the Middle East the Christian population which was once almost 18% has dwindled to 2% in the Holy Land. These families rely on selling products made from hand carved olive wood as a means to survive. For some this is their only source of income. Departed Parishioners: We ask that you kindly remember our departed parishioners and their families in your thoughts and prayers especially: William DiLodovico, Arthur Curley, John Connolly, Godofredo Delamasa, Michael Celardo, Marie Donovan, Michael Bilotto, Josephine Van Workum, Edward Kielty Jr, Josephine Kent, Joseph DeMeo, John McNamara Jr., Theresa Mauro, Mary Wein, William Asley, Francis Englehardt and Patricia Tompkins. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

4 Sacred Heart Parish Groups Bible Study: Fr. Eric has a weekly Bible study group which meets on Saturdays from 1-2:30 PM in the school s small cafeteria. During the hour The Rosary is recited, Father gives a short bible lecture and there is a brief group discussion. All are welcome to attend. Altar Servers: We are always looking for new boys and girls to become altar servers. If you are in the fifth grade or older, are a practicing Catholic and have received your first Holy Communion you can join. If anyone is interested please contact the Rectory at (718) or simply ask Fr. Eric after Mass. Being a server not only increases one s spiritual experience at Mass but also is a great way to get involved in the parish. Sacred Heart Youth Group: Sacred Heart currently has a Youth Group for children in grades If your child is interested in joining or if you have any questions contact Maria Montouri at (347) The group meets every first and third Monday of the month in the school cafeteria at 7 PM. Being a member of the youth group involves volunteering at bake sales, food drives and used clothing drives. The youth group also has Movie Night, retreat weekends and plays laser tag. This is a fun way to earn community service credits for school. Legion of Mary: The Sacred Heart chapter of the Legion of Mary meets weekly (if possible) on Wednesday at 6:30 PM in the rectory. The meeting lasts roughly one hour and the members pray the Rosary and offer assistance to the Pastor. If you are interested please call Patti Foley at All are welcome. Sacred Heart Scouts: Pack and Troop 74 for grades K-10 for ALL children meets on Mondays at 7 PM in the school cafeteria, open registration. Holy Name: The Holy Name Society is one of the oldest and most traditional groups of the Church. All men of the parish ages 18 and older can attend. The next meeting of The Holy Name will take place on Sunday, April 14th after the 9 AM Mass in the Rectory basement. All men ages 18 and older are invited. Sacred Heart RCIA: Have you or anyone you know expressed an interest in becoming a Catholic? Were you baptized a Catholic but never received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation. We offer the opportunity for people to come together in small groups to learn more about The Catholic Faith. These sessions center on the teachings and experiences of the Gospels and the Church while preparing individuals to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. Candidates will make their sacraments at Sacred Heart during the Easter season. Call the rectory at (718) if you or someone you know is interested in more details. Online Giving: Do you know that Sacred Heart Parish now offers online giving which makes supporting your parish quick and easy. Online giving is perfect for older parishioners who find it difficult to get to Mass especially during the harsh winter months. It is also beneficial to older couples who travel often or have a second home in another state. Finally, online giving is very convenient for married couples with children whose weekends can be hectic with sporting events, dance recitals or family obligations. Theater Group: The Sacred Heart Theater Group will be performing Mary Poppins this year. The play will take place on Friday, April 12th & Saturday, April 13th at 7 PM in the school auditorium. Please see the flier on the next page for more details. Every year the children in this group work very hard not only to entertain us but also to showcase their theatrical abilities. Please come and let them know you appreciate their efforts.
