Jerry Fourroux Pastor Bob Tobias Clerk of Session Cheryl Appleton Bill Beltz Chris Bloom Dick Boehret Robb Dietrich Brenda Manchester Elaine Rockey John Stugrin Trustees Jeff Baier Chair David Bratt Ken Burkholder John Hess Tim Kelley Tom Paulhamus John Richards Tyler Rockey Dennis Swift Mimi Troisi Deacons Deanna Boehret Lenora Caskey Joyce Mix Nancy Nagel Carol Prentiss Peg Redka Jean Richards Harry Vitolins Who are you competing against? In sports and in commerce, it is easy to identify a competitor whether it is the other team you are playing or the company that sells the same product or service as you. However, at the top of both the sports and business worlds are those who do not just look at others as competition. These successful teams usually realize that the real competition is yourself. This is like the call of the Scripture to progressively continue in Jesus as we did at first and to progressively work out what has been worked in us. We do not compete against other Christians or other Churches. We do compete with ourselves as we press on towards the goal of growing in Christlikeness. We compete to Enjoy God more than we had yesterday. Our failures today will be opportunity for obedience tomorrow. This is the goal of our worship. We seek to be better informed and reformed by the Scriptures this week than we were last week. This is the goal of all our education. We also seek to learn new ways to serve and love our families, neighborhoods, and co-workers this Fall more than last Fall. This is the goal of our outreach. Every day, month, or season, there is always more ways to improve and more places to grow. One of the most powerful truths about the Living God is how His Spirit is inexhaustible. If the Spirit is inexhaustible then there is always more to learn, teach, and satisfy us. Sometimes, we need to take extra steps to improve: commit ourselves to a Study, seek to learn the Gospel from more seasoned brothers and sisters, or take a short term mission trip that forces you out of your comfort zone. As a Church community, there are times where we can take some extra steps. Our Session has been praying for the last 3-4 years about our future and adapting the way we do ministry to be a more effective means of loving and reaching our community. God has led us to take several steps of faith with improving our Sanctuary and our Fellowship areas, but we also know that our ministry structure and perspective should also improve. Our denomination, ECO, has given us an opportunity to retool and improve our ministry at Lycoming Centre. By partnering with Paul Borden of Church Health Initiative, the Session has asked a group of leaders to examine our ministry, our history, and demographics, and prescribe some actions going forward. They will highlight our strengths and weaknesses, and give us a report that will take some steps of faith on our part. Unlike many church consultations, the recommendations are prescriptions that we will commit to as a Body as a step of faith. Continued on next page
2 Here are some Important details to be aware of: * The Consultation Weekend is October 25-28, 2018 * A report will be created after the Church Health Initiative Team conducts a variety of interviews There will be No Sunday School on October 28th The Church Service will begin at 10am with Dr. Paul Borden preaching * There will be a 2 minute stretch break after the service then a presentation of the results of the report Please be in prayer about this exciting weekend and feel free to approach any member of the Session or me with more questions. We have to be better as Church tomorrow than we are today. Our Lord has called us to this mission of transformation in Christ for ourselves and others. We cannot not be satisfied with the status quo, we must seek God s kingdom here and now as His holy people. May the God of all Grace delight us with His presence by the Holy Spirit for the sake of Jesus Christ. Blessings, Jerry What is Dare to Dine? 6 FALL QTR SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES The Women's Class, lead by Ann Swift The Women s Class will be studying Ephesians this quarter. Ann writes: Ephesians is profound and teaches many pertinent and basic Christian doctrines with clarity. Through examining each chapter with questions, we hope to understand and live the truth. This Sunday School class also places great emphasis on sharing, prayer and supporting each other. Teaching and fellowship characterize this option. Rich Boyle will be leading a class on Galatians Paul s letter to churches in todays country of Turkey. Rich writes: The most destructive dangers to the church have never been atheism, pagan religions, or cults that openly deny Scripture, but rather supposedly Christian movements that accept a minimum of biblical truth that their unscriptural doctrines seem relatively insignificant and harmless. But a single drop of poison in a large container can make all the water lethal. And a single false idea that in any way undercuts God s grace poisons the whole system of belief. As Paul continues to spread the gospel, false teachers begin to undermine the central doctrine of Christianity and teach that faith in Christ is not enough for salvation. In an earnest attempt to salvage the integrity of the gospel (and his authority), Paul writes a letter that will go on to encourage hundreds of generations of Christians to remain steadfast in their faith. Paul contrasts grace and law, faith and works and defends the theological and practical implications of Christianity and encourages believers then and now- to live a holy life that bears much fruit. Please join us for this class and feel free to discuss as much or as little as you are comfortable while still benefiting from the study of God s word. Adult Bible Class, lead by Frank Conner Frank Conner continues to lead the Adult Bible Class as they follow the International Sunday School Lesson curriculum. Frank writes: The Fall quarter we will be learning about God's actions as Creator as we look at lessons on Genesis Chapters 1-3 including the Fall. We will then look at the Father's work as re creator as we talk about Noah, the call of Abram and the birth of his promised son. Finally we will consider the work of the Father's hand in the lives of Jacob and his sons and the 12 tribes of Israel. All are welcome to join the class for any or all of the studies in the coming Sunday School year.
7 And for the kids, LCPC Sunday School has plenty to offer: For the Toddlers, Kim Matthews and Heather Fox and a few other volunteers will bless and entertain their growing group with Pray-N-Play. First book is "Bible Basic for Kids"; Second book is "Jesus Speaks"; Third book is " Making Bible Heroes Real". Most Sundays are a combination of stories from the Pray-N-Play series, as well as singing, Praying, and drawing. If anyone would like to come and check out the Books and /or the class, feel free to do so. Toddlers graduate to the Pre-K thru 3 rd Grade group in the Grange. This fall quarter, this lively group will be going through three units of the David Cook "Noah's Park" Children's Church: (1) We Worship God Together (by giving, learning His Word, praying, and with music); (2) Jesus Shows His Love and Greatness (Jesus is all-powerful, Jesus can help us, and we can trust Jesus); (3) Jesus' Friends Help One Another (Jesus' friends help others and work together). The format will be a practical lesson followed by a Bible story (which the children act out), a puppet show (with the Bible theme), a memory verse, and an arts-and-crafts project which also supports the Bible theme. The teachers and helpers are Christina and Nate DeRemer, John Stugrin, Lin Baier, Jean Richards, Wendy Sears, Jen West. 4 th and 5 th graders come back to lower level of Taylor Hall and join Becca and Tyler Rocky. 7 th 9 th grades get to join Sue and Harry s class. This quarter they will be continuing their study of the life of David and discovering what it means to be a man after God s own heart using a book on David s life by Chuck Swindoll. The High School kids join Luke Justice in his class. Sunday School at LCPC truly has something for everyone! Come join us! Respectfully Submitted, Chris Bloom Sanctuary Door Update SHOUT OUT to Bob Gannon, Danni Gannon and Dee Gannon for cleaning the whole sanctuary!!! 8 I have been to worship, heart filled to overflowing with praise and joy and gratitude -- as if it were giveaway day at the Growers Market and I was juggling my posture to keep from losing a single perfectly rounded golden pepper or ready-to-burst tomato, while my chin was busy trying to tuck down the corn tufts piled high. We were led in jubilant song: Come, Thou Fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing Thy grace Streams of mercy, never ceasing Call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it Mount of Thy unchanging love I have worshipped in days of bounty. I have also crept in the back, late, hoping to hide the emptiness, the faithlessness -- my lack of hope coating each thought and emotion like the fine silt that contaminates every crevice when the river floods. Together we sang: Oh eternal weight of glory! Oh inheritance divine! We will see our Lord redeeming Every past and future time. All our pains will be transfigured, Like the scars of Christ our Lord. We will see the weight of glory, And our broken years restored. I have worshipped in days of famine. Perhaps most common, though, are the Sundays in which I have been following the routine. I ve greeted briefly, and as I sat waiting through the pastor s welcome my attention was drawn to the flowers behind the pulpit and the things I planned to do after the benediction. My heart was called into God s presence through voices joined: In Christ alone, who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live I have worshipped in days that were ordinary. If we never preach a sermon, or offer a testimony, or prepare the Lord s Supper, or present the Scripture reading, or collect a single offering, we are ministering to one another when we lift our faces and voices and hearts in corporate song. It is the encouragement from one weary pilgrim to another -- it is how we lead ourselves and our brothers and sisters to the Creator, Redeemer and Lover of our souls. One Sunday, marveling at this mystery of corporate worship, I mused to a young dad standing next to me, Singing together is so weird; it s so strange. He agreed. How glad I am for the ministry to my heart of those who have stood in the middle or the front, with voices trained or rusty, united in the strangeness of praising God with song. Ephesians 5:19-21 Address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Respectfully Submitted for the Worship Committee, Stephanie Williams Page 6
