Often ptrayed with a lone sheep draped around his neck, shepherd was a fellow you could count on to keep people safe and satisfied. Back n, of cse, everybody knew what a shepherd was up close: keeper of economy. Sheep were vital to community, as y provided an imptant sce of food and milk, clothg, and shelter (tents). Sheep were needed religious purposes sacrifice, and busess as ir sks were used writg. Most shepherds wked ir own families, guardg flocks day and night. These animals unusually helpless face of an attack, so without such a protect herds could easily be lost. God loves a shepherd But shepherds were not only popular symbols secular culture. The Bible seems to fairly burst with m. Many great figures of Israel started out as shepherds, cludg Abraham, Isaac, Rachel, Jacob, Moses, and David. Good Abel, bee he died, was identified as a shepherd. Yet need of wld never rests. So Jesus, moved with pity, begs an round of teachg, seekg to answer great and yawng ignance of populace. They don t know why y re here, what purpose of ir own lives is, what God wants of m. How can a good shepherd not respond? F Jesus, as Jeremiah, confusion of sheep is personal. Jeremiah is wracked to bone with it, and Jesus takes it to cross. The best shepherds were always family members, whom survival of flock and welf of community were one and same. A blessg is vocation of God s protection and sanctification. The Church blesses people, animals, objects and even time itself. Thus does she remd us that every day, as we go through actions, we travel as companions of Christ and his Church. A blessg can be a request some good to be granted by God on an dividual to set apart somethg dive service by imbug it with a sacred character. What does it mean an object to be blessed? The blessg of objects example, water, a buildg a piece of jewelry is meant to set that object apart holy use. Water becomes holy water, a buildg becomes a church and jewelry becomes a holy medal. Once a blessg is imparted by a priest deacon, object should be treated with respect and not disposed of casually disrespectfully. The object, beg blessed, has become ber of a blessg. How is this not superstition? We merely regardg objects say holy water a crucifix as set aside sacred use and imbued with a blessg that derives any power from God s will alone. The object itself is not sce of power. Once we thk of objects as powerful and of mselves, rar than merely signs and bers of God s love and mercy, n we engagg superstition. Is it magic? It is opposite. The difference between magic and religion is that magic seeks to bend power of God to will of user, while religion seeks to cooperate with and serve will of one true God. In today s Gospel, Ld Jesus listens to repts of those he had sent out two by two to mister to people. After apostles repted what y had done, Jesus, recognizg ir fatigue, says, Come away by yselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what Ld is tellg his disciples year as well. We need to pause on jney of discipleship and simply rest Ld. Sunday Mass provides many opptunities quiet times, particularly durg periods of silence followg readgs. Why not take time today to allow savg wd of Ld to penetrate y heart durg those silent times? Despite ir need rest and relaxation, Jesus is moved with pity and contues his teachg. How do you react when people approach you at odd times on y day off? What is y attitude about need rest and relaxation? How do se needs affect y schedule of mistry? PRO-ABORTION? When people believe somethg, you do not see m desperately tryg to avoid beg lked to activity with which ir movement is identified. People who suppt Second Amendment do not md beg called pro-gun, and list goes on and on. The one exception is people who suppt legal abtion. Although y vigously defend abtion s legality, y do everythg possible to avoid beg called pro-abtion. Clearly, y advocatg legality of an activity which is not only repugnant, but which even y know is defensible. If that were not case, y would not become so enraged at beg called pro-abtion.
