2 Page 2 ST. PIUS X, STICKNEY FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 18, 2018 The integrity of creation In the beginning, God called everything good. Light and darkness, water and land, plants and animals, man and woman. God made no exceptions and withheld no blessings. Creation was designed to be, well, paradise. And there was a remarkable lack of tension and fear between humanity and the living world around them. Adam wasn t the lion tamer, holding nature at bay with a whip and a chair. He was the gardener. The creation story conveys a wistful image of what might have been in a world before sin. The perfect harmony between humans and the natural world is something we long for with a primordial desire. We seek it fishing, hiking, hang gliding, camping, or on walks through the park. We look for it in our flowerpots and in our relationships with our pets. When we vote for clean-air initiatives, conserve water, recycle our cans, and send money to plant trees in Haiti, we are acknowledging that, somewhere along the way, we have failed in our original pact with nature and we want to make amends. In the story of Noah, perhaps one of the most terrifying stories of Hebrew scripture, we see the implicit fear of humanity unmasked. In every large-scale catastrophe, not to mention every personal crisis, we catch ourselves wondering: Why is God doing this? What have I or we done to deserve this? In the recesses of our imagination, we retain the image that God, like us, will grow tired of the constant failings and excuses of human beings for the world we live in. And one day God will, because it is within the divine prerogative to do so, reach out and destroy the wickedness of the once-good creation for not being the world it was supposed to be. The terror of the Noah story is relieved by one central fact: that God forswears this very prerogative. The bottom line in the Noah story is not that God can destroy creation but that God promises not to. God establishes a covenant with living things, people and animals alike. Wholesale demolition is not what the world was created for, and God, even more so than us, wants to see another solution to the problem of sin. The ark of our salvation Water was the biblical symbol of primordial chaos, which God pinned back behind the firmament in the ordering of creation. God also declared sovereignty over the power of water with the invention of dry land. Because a flood defined the horror of ultimate annihilation, it is fitting that water became the tool of salvation in Baptism. The God who changes sin into grace, and death into life, now transfigures the sign of water from destruction to redemption. We are not surprised to see the results of such a powerful sign in the life of Jesus. As Mark tells it, no sooner was Jesus baptized than the "Spirit drove him into the desert to confront the temptation of sin. But Satan can wield no advantage over him. Instead, Jesus dwells among the beasts and the angels with equal serenity. The hierarchy of creation from heaven to Earth is once more in perfect harmony. Jesus recognizes the time of fulfillment is at hand. (Taken from PREPARE THE WORD) Love, Father Tony 1st Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God... Mark 1:14 Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come to Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. REGRET AND ABORTION There are thousands of support groups across America helping women overcome the emotional toll of abortion. However, many pro-abortion advocates still claim that women do not regret their abortions. This flies in the face of both facts and common sense. If we really want to know the role regret plays in the abortion issue, we need to consider how abortionminded mothers later felt about the decision they made. We would find that for every woman who might say she regretted giving birth to her child; thousands would say that they regret aborting their babies.

He walks from the Benedictine monastery, San Anselmo, down the Aventine hill to the Dominican monastery of Santa Sabina. This very old tradition was revived by Pope John XXIII in the late 1950s. Have you ever wondered who gives the pope his ashes? It s the cardinal who has been given the title of the church of Santa Sabina. The pope s homily at this Mass states his theme for Lent. Santa Sabina dates from the fifth century, and is one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. One of the panels on its main doors features the Crucifixion, a scene not normally depicted in art until much later. In the year 1219 the pope gave the church to Saint Dominic for his new religious order, the Order of Preachers, commonly called the Dominicans, and it remains their world headquarters to this day. That pope, Honorius III, was a member of the Savelli family, and this church was their personal family chapel. Sabina was a wealthy Roman lady who became a Christian and was martyred, and whose home became a place of prayer. Later, the church built on that spot was dedicated to her memory. Rev. WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER Don t miss out on the upcoming enrichment for married couples on April 6-8, 2018 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Elk Grove Village, IL. The enrichment begins with a private weekend experience including 11 presentations about practical tools for growing in loving relationships, and provides ongoing enrichments after the weekend from the Worldwide Marriage Encounter community. For information on applying please go to wwme-chicagoland.org. or call GOD S POWER We are not in our power, but in the power of God. St. Perpetua PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today s readings, it is covenant. God s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God s goodness and fidelity to the promise. God shows us how to be good, not by decree, but by example. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Tuesday, Feb 20, 2018 LENTEN WEEKDAY Turn it over One of the many advantages of memorized prayers such as the Our Father is that we can say them when we have no words of our own; we don t have to think. That s also one of their disadvantages: We don t have to think. In fact, we may have forgotten exactly what we are saying when we pray the Our Father. For example, do we really mean, Thy will be done? or are there unspoken conditions attached: Thy will be done as long as it doesn t interfere with my carefully laid plans for my life? To turn everything over to God is truly the only way to live without fear. It s what Jesus did; it s what we are called to do as well. TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 55:10-11; Matthew 6:7-15 (225). This is how you are to pray: Our Father who art in heaven. Reprinted with permission from TakeFiveForFaith.com.

5 Page 5 February 18, 2018 THE INNER WORD What s in your heart? Lent marks the time of year the church seems most focused and intent on its identity and mission. Through renewed attention to prayer, repentance, and generosity, we seek once again to incorporate ourselves more closely into the ministry, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ. For the church s ministers to open this reality to the people they serve, they themselves need to enter into the season and the mysteries for which it prepares. What is troubling my conscience and making it difficult for me to be truly myself and present the gospel to others with integrity? What steps can I take to clear my conscience? God s promise of an everlasting covenant inspires faith and confidence. Do I share this confidence? Do I convey it with sensitivity? For many, Baptism is a distant and unremembered event. What does it out my Baptism now? What difference does my Baptism make in how I live? In what ways can I rededicate myself to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving? How can I re-envision these practices this year? Our Lenten journey began on Ash Wednesday. To assist us on our Lenten journey we offer many opportunities that enable us to participate in prayer and reflection. Plan to take advantage of these opportunities: 1. Saturday Holy Hour-8 am 2. Saturday morning Mass-9 am 3. Fridays Stations of the Cross-7 pm 4. 6 Page 6 ST. PIUS X, STICKNEY 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me For the past two weekends, our parish has conducted the Annual Catholic Appeal s Commitment pledge. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. If you did not have an opportunity to participate in this appeal, you may still do so. Envelopes are located in the church narthex.
