Advent Prayer O God, As light comes from this candle, May the blessing of Jesus Christ come to us, Warming our hearts and brightening our way. May Christ our Saviour bring life into darkness of this world, Principal s Message and to us, as we wait for His coming. Amen As we observed all around us that signs of the Christmas season seemed to begin in October, we, as Catholics, and in keeping with our faith, are ever mindful that the Christmas season really begins on December 3 rd, the First Sunday of Advent. It is a period of simple living and extra prayer. It is a time to prepare for a new coming of Jesus, our Savior. The word Advent means coming ; a time when we remember Jesus first coming, and prepare our hearts for a new coming. Jesus is a loving and peaceful Savior. He calls his followers to make the whole world loving and peaceful. During Advent, we prepare our homes and our lives for Jesus, the King of Glory and the Prince of Peace. As well, we make time for ourselves to reflect and pray, and to put aside our grievances and unite in peace, love, hope and joy. Our Family Advent Mass is scheduled to take place on December 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the school gym. Please join us at that time to pause, reflect and enjoy the true meaning of this special season! A. Lang

3 DECEMBER VIRTUE - HOPE This month we will celebrate the Virtue of Hope. We believe that God comes to us as a real human who can show us the way of life. We understand that both the world and its people are from God and so are essentially good. Furthermore, God has given us this Advent season year after year in order to focus our minds and our hearts on the good all around us. Year after year, we are reminded that God chose to send His Son to us because we are worth it. God knows how great we can be when we all come together. People of Hope Keep up a positive attitude Can bounce back from tough situations Set and stick to their goals See the good in others even when they make mistakes Work to include others Let others know that they are good people Lost & Found Our Lost & Found Box is overflowing. During the next few weeks of December, please encourage your children to peruse the numerous articles of clothing that have accumulated in our bin. We will be making a donation of unclaimed clothing on the last day of school. JANUARY VIRTUE ~ SELF-CONTROL This month we will celebrate the Virtue of Self-control. God has given us the ability to choose. We are able to control how we react to what happens around us. We may feel pressure from inside or from outside ourselves to react violently to a situation. We've all lost it at one time or another. We are never proud of those moments. As soon as they happen we make a promise that they will not happen again. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at controlling our reactions. We can get better at showing self-control. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. Self control helps us to resist the temptation to something that will harm ourselves or others. Self-control is one of the marks of a spiritually mature person. When we all use self-control, we can be sure that our school will be a safe, caring and inclusive place to live and to learn. A person with self-control Is patient Knows how to wait his/her turn Can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations Knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, fighting, etc.) Can think things through and do what is best for everyone EQAO Scores Achievement Levels: We are very pleased with our achievement level scores for our Grade 3 and 6 students in 2016/ Below are the results regarding the data. The DPCDSB will be posting the entire Christ the King Catholic school learning plan on our website, please feel free to review. Grade 3 Reading Writing Mathematics School 86% 91% 73% Grade 6 Reading Writing Mathematics School 96% 96% 54%

4 From Your Catholic School Trustee Sharon Hobin As we begin the Advent season, we reflect on how we are preparing for the birth of Jesus. In our schools we pray daily, celebrate Masses and liturgies, and discuss what the birth of Christ means to all of us and how we can welcome Jesus into our hearts. We know the madness of shopping and preparing our homes for Christmas and making sure that we look after those who are less fortunate than we are. So too our teachers and students in our schools are preparing for the birth of Jesus by reaching out to those less fortunate than they are by supporting those in need like the St. Vincent de Paul Society or our local food banks. They are looking for Jesus in the people around them by respecting each other and negating the act of bullying. They do gather to prepare in song and play in Christmas concerts and school assemblies. So by the end of Advent, our school communities hearts are open to welcome Jesus into our lives and celebrate His birth. Thank you to those of you who have worked so hard on behalf of our students to support activities in our schools since we began in September. And I know this work continues. We look forward to the new year of 2018 with again open hearts that we will see more peace in our world. I wish all of you a very happy and holy Christmas and the very best for 2018! Oh, come, little children, oh, come, one and all To Bethlehem s stable, in Bethlehem s stall And see with rejoicing the glorious sign Our Father in heaven has sent us this night! From my family to yours - Merry Christmas! 5 Breakfast with Santa on December 13th Santa & Mrs. Claus are coming to CTK for a pancake breakfast. Santa will be taking pictures with students. Order forms and information have been sent home. All proceeds will be helping families in our community. Thank you to Mrs. Michisor, Mrs. Colaco, Mr. and Mrs. Bhavsar, Mrs. Marquez, Mrs. Scialdone, Mrs. Viloria, Mrs. Jarvis, Mrs. Mabini, Mrs. Suh, Mrs. Brunton, and the Grade 8 students for assisting with the breakfast. Eco-Source presentations will take place on Januray 26th and 27th. All students will be involved in the school waste reduction workshops. Thank you to Miss DaRosa for organizing this event. Remembrance Day Every year for the last 16 years, Mr. Mason, retired teacher from C.T.K. has transformed our school into a living Remembrance Day tribute. With a personal collection of over a thousand authentic World War I and World War II artifacts on display, students were encouraged to see, touch and explore numerous items of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives, so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today. World War I and II era music plays in the background as students try on uniforms and hold disabled weapons and briefly enter into the lives of the soldiers who took part in these wars. Mr. Mason and current Grade 5 teacher, Mr. Celeste also organized the Remembrance Day ceremony, which was celebrated in the school gym at 10 am on November 10 th. The staff and community of C.T.K would like to thank Mr. Mason for all his hard work in setting up the fabulous Remembrance Day Exhibit and helping us to understand and appreciate the sacrifices of so many. Cold Weather and Illness In colder weather we often receive requests to allow students to remain indoors when students have a cold, flu etc.. Please note that we cannot comply, as we have neither the facilities nor the staff to supervise these students. Please use discretion in keeping your child at home to recover if they are ill. A child who is wheezing, coughing is not in a state to learn and will infect others. If your child is well enough to attend school, they should be well enough to go outside at recess. Clothing in Cold Weather Children will go outside for recess and lunch hour, weather permitting. On extremely cold days we limit the amount of time students spend outdoors. During morning announcements, we remind students to wear all winter clothes. Children should come to school with boots, winter coats, scarves, hats and mittens. As well, in order to keep their workplace clean, please ensure your child has a pair of hardsoled indoor shoes. Slippers are not recommended due to possibility of immediate evacuation. It will reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will also assist our custodial staff in keeping our school clean. Thanks for your continued cooperation. Peel Regional Police Community Partnership Welcome Constable Car as our neighborhood community officer through the Region of Peel. He will be stopping by the school on a regular basis and visiting classrooms to speak with students about his role as Police Officers. We would also like to welcome Constable Moldrik, who will be sharing all the Grade 6 Peel Regional Police Education.
