Fleur Kupke fleurkupke@hotmail.com Colleen Bradtke ncbradtke@optusnet.com.au Jess Edgecomb jmedgecomb@bigpond.com Love your Church Jesus Does! You too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives. Ephesians 2:22 NIV Jesus lives in each of those who make up His church. You are members of God s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22 NIV) Nothing is nearer and dearer to the heart of God than His church. Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. (Ephesians 5:25 NKJV) His greatest interest, and the core of His eternal purpose, is that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known. (Ephesians 3:10 NIV) You ask, How can I become a member of Christ s church? It s a family; you must be born into it. That s why Jesus told Nicodemus, You must be born again. (John 3:7 NKJV) You don t get in by shaking a preacher s hand, filling out a membership card or making a donation to the building fund. The Bible says, Receive one another, just as Christ received [you]. (Romans 15:7 NKJV) Once you ve accepted Christ and He has accepted you, you re in. You may not have the high profile others enjoy in your church, but in God s eyes you re a bona fide, blood-washed, Heaven-bound member of His family. The Bible says, The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts 2:47 KJV) and when He adds you, there s not a soul on earth who can subtract you! 3 From the editor... You are members of God's household! Contents... Article Love your Church Jesus Does! Page number 2 Those words resonate as we celebrate the opening of the newly renovated facilities at our church building at Glynde. Actually, may I rephrase that - God's building at Glynde. The reason we come here, why we care about our building, why we want it to be used and practical and welcoming, is all for God's glory, not our own. There are many people who contributed countless hours to this project, but none of them would have bothered if it wasn't to glorify our great God! The dedication plaque bears the verse from John 8:12 - Jesus said "I am the light of the world" and in essence, that's what this is all about, pointing toward Jesus, that people may find His light. And what a privilege to be part of that and be able to use this building to that purpose. In saying that, God's real home is in His people, as we read in Ephesians 2:22, we are his dwelling place! In exploring that, this edition takes a small glimpse of what church looks like outside our walls too. While this is a time of celebration, it also now a time to step up and use what God has blessed us with to glorify Him! 4 From Pastor Wayne... Hi one and all! This last month has been a special month, culminating as it has with the FORMAL OPENING OF GLYNDE REDEVELOPMENT last Sunday, 28 th May, with a bring and share community lunch afterwards. It was great to have the church overflowing with various visitors and distinguished guests, and members of the Korean church and the Sudanese community. It was a wonderful opportunity to give thanks to God for enabling us to redevelop this church for His ministry, and to proclaim to the everyone what this place is. What is this place? Well, regardless of what signs we have out the front or not have out the front, this is: *A place of welcome for all *A place of service, where people are cared for *A place of transformation, a place where people s lives are changed for the better, the much better, as they meet Jesus, and, through Jesus, the God of the Universe. Has it been worth redeveloping this place? You bet, if you want to make a difference in this world. And we very much do!! *This Sunday and next Sunday are the end of the FESTIVAL HALF OF THE CHURCH YEAR. We finish the Festival half of the year by celebrating Pentecost Sunday this week, followed by Trinity Sunday next week. We finish by focusing on our God, and who He is: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. *This term, we have been looking at THE APOSTLES CREED, and what we confess that we believe as God s children. During June, and at the start of July, we are looking at the last portion of the creed, where we confess: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian church, the communion of saints, 4

of term two, I will be taking six weeks Rest and Recuperation Leave. I rarely have more than two or three weeks at a stretch off, so I m looking forward to a time of rest and a time of recuperation as I relax with Jenine. I look forward to God refreshing me for service with you in ministry for our Lord Jesus. the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. This is what we believe! When we stand and confess the Apostles Creed, we are in a state of confession before God: we are saying to God, in the presence of one another, what we believe about Him as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. *At the start of July, we will finish the second term of the year with our regular COMBINED MULTICULTURAL SERVICE, followed by a Bring and Share lunch, and with our CHURCH 4 KIDS service. Have a glance at the Worship Calendar (on page 19) in magazine for the details. During my absence, Pastor David Christian will lead worship and preach. He will also be available for any pastoral needs, and for pastoral care. *May God bless us as together we build one another up and encourage one another in our faith; and as together we reach out into our community with the Good News of God s love, and His forgiveness through Jesus. May God bless us as we reveal and celebrate God s love, so that all may know Jesus and worship God through him. Pastor Wayne *In the school holidays and for four weeks 5

From the Chairperson... May or Mayhem! Without God it is utterly impossible. But with God everything is possible. Mark 10:27 May has been an amazingly busy and happy month - so much has happened in our church community - mid-week gatherings of families, quilters, craft, parents, markets; and this month, best of all, completion of the redevelopment project! Praise God for all the blessings that he brings to us and the people who gather for worship and all the activities that take place here. May Milestone: Our congregation met for its half yearly meeting, and in my report for that meeting I commented on the changes that have happened to our church building and facilities in the last eight months. Many people have worked faithfully in using their resources, time and talents to work to our vision to provide welcoming facilities where worship, Christian service and outreach activities can help us spread the good news of God s love and message of salvation. I wish to acknowledge and thank everyone for their good humour in accommodating of all the disruption that occurred while our facilities were 'cut in half' and then rebuilt. We can now enjoy first-class and upgraded amenities with welcoming, light-filled spaces, a lift and new stairs providing full access to the first floor. The tireless work 6 of the Redevelopment Group (John Kupke (Chairperson), Pastor Wayne, Klaus Schulz, Brad Leach, Colleen Bradtke, Marianne Law, Lyall Kupke, Ben Pfitzner, Val Matters) and the dedicated effort of Klaus Schulz in liaising with the Building Project Managers (Marshall & Brougham) and the Architect (Phillips Pilkington) for the months of demolition and construction can now be fully appreciated as we begin to enjoy the results of their hard labour. I also wish to acknowledge the financial support of people who have donated generously to this project, both upfront and to those who have committed ongoing support to enable the repayment of our loan. We have borrowed $660,000 from the LLL for this project; and our ongoing pledges and fund-raising ventures are important to ensure we are able to honour our commitments. Opening & Thanksgiving Offering - what a celebration! The official opening was held on Sunday 28th May at 10am with a joyful celebration and a combined service, gathering our 9:00 am, 10:30 am, Korean and Nuer worshippers together and resulting in a bring-and-share feast. People were invited to make a special thanksgiving offering via envelopes or via Direct Debit (EFT)- if you would still like to do this, please see Lyall Kupke or Ben Pfitzner. Thank you to everyone who joined in the preparation, the worship time, the music,

the food, the prayers etc on the day. I heard so many comments about how delighted people were with the day and the smiles said it all! God has truly blessed us and it is wonderful to have a community that is seeking to be a light to the community, a place where people can meet Jesus and get to know him as their Saviour and friend. We were honoured to have Mr Vincent Tarzia, MP, State Member for Hartley, Mr Simon Brewer, Mayor of Campbelltown and Mr Robert Bria, Mayor and Mr Kevin Duke, councillor of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters among our distinguished guests. It was also exciting to see so many other guests and visitors share this celebration with us. Further Projects: While we delight in the improvements to our building, the new work has highlighted the need to improve other parts of our building, notably the worship space and the kitchen. A list has been made of work relating to maintenance and upgrading of the building that was not part of the redevelopment project. Some of these are smaller projects that can be addressed over time and within existing budgets. The women's fellowship group is investigating replacing the paraments in the church, and this will greatly add to refreshing the appearance of our worship space. In addition, a generous offer has been made by someone in our church community to replace the carpet in the church. This offer was accepted at the half yearly meeting and quotes are being obtained. If all goes to plan, the carpet may be laid during the July school holidays. A further offer has been made in relation to upgrading the kitchen - this will be explored over the coming months and information presented to the congregation in due course. People News: Pastor Wayne will be taking Rest and Relaxation leave for 6 weeks in June/July 7 and Pastor David Christian will be preaching during that time. We thank Pastor Wayne for his spiritual guidance and care for us every week, and wish him well while he is away. Jessica Craver, Youth in Global Mission, has been working as a volunteer with us for almost 10 months. She has supported and led a range of ministries during her time with us e.g. mid-week activities of Youth, Young Adults Group, Playgroup, Mainly Music, Thursday Cards, Saturday markets, Church4Kids etc. She has immersed herself in our lives and we have been hugely blessed by her time with us. We will miss her greatly when she leaves us in July. We have been saddened by the sudden passing of Dianne Franklin on 9 May and thank God for her life and the connections she has had within this church community for more than 25 years. Our prayers are with her sister Kathy, who many of us know, and the rest of Dianne's family and friends at this time. LCA and wider church The Professional Standards Department of the LCA has produced new pamphlets and training on policies of the church which relate to standards of ethical behaviour for all members of the LCA. The LCA has produced a core workshop which is essential training for pastors, pastoral assistants, Executive and Board CONTINUED PG 9

What language do we speak? Travelling is always fun, and for Grant and myself our trip overseas was amazing. We went to so many beautiful and interesting places, ate amazing food and learnt so much, as you always do. I realised though the importance of language! So many signs and conversations I didn t understand! I don't speak Italian or Dutch or French, and my German is limited to understanding maybe one word in twenty, which doesn't help much! The words entry and exit are very important when visiting tourist sites, and the first time you walk up to a site you stop and look, and hope you are going to the right way! Smiles and nodding get you a long way, but knowing a few words can be of a huge help! So many conversations you cannot participate in. And then, one day a family we did not know took the time out to talk to us as we were travelling on a train that was a day we remembered! It made me realise what it must be like for the many families that come to Australia, and to our mid week church groups. And, you realise the importance of your own words as they smile and nod at you! And you realise that they want to be included and just want to be a part of this community. 8 Now that our redevelopment is finished and everyone can move around the complex easier, now is the time to share words and start conversations with those who come here. Playgroup and Mainly Music provide opportunities for mums to chat and learn from us and each other. Our Parenting course has started and has already provided a lot of sharing and chatting... we would love it if you could join us afterward for Coffee and Chat so that we can continue the chance to chat and share and you can help explain different topics! Why not come along on Friday morning after 10.30? You will be surprised! We hosted a Girls night out before I went away and 25 women joined us. There was a lot of chat that night! You could join us for our next night and join in that chat... Or you could read the Lutheran Women magazine, where you can read about what we are doing here at Glynde. But you know, most importantly you could be like that family that spoke to us on a train and made us feel included and wanted. And we have something special to share God s Love! Barbara Mattiske Cross Cultural worker

There are a lot of events coming up in July and we would love for you to join us Mainly Music Fun Morning Saturday July 1, at 9.45am Some and see and join in the songs and actions! Multi Cultural Service Sunday July 2, at 10.30am This is for everyone to share their history and culture not only with our Korean and Sudanese churches but our multi cultural community. Girls Night Out Thursday July 6 th at 6.30pm If you are a girl come and join us and take the opportunity to speak with someone you may not know! Church 4 Kids Sunday July 9 th at 10.30am It s for kids, and a great way to introduce Jesus to those who don t yet know Him and that needs us to share His love. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 for Ministry members and people in leadership or who engage with children and youth under 18 as part of their ministries. The LCA has been holding discussions/ consultations based on the Ordination Consultation Booklet concerning the ordination of women and men in the LCA. The consultation focussed on the draft doctrinal statement and the theological basis for why the ordination of men and women need not be church divisive. Please pray that the church will seek a way forward to recognise the gifts and callings of all members as it ponders these matters. At the last convention the proposal to enable women to be called 9 as pastors in the church failed by an extremely narrow margin. May God continue to guide and bless us as we seek to serve him in this community of faith and beyond. In Christian service, Helene Schulz, Chairperson

Something to Celebrate: Opening of our Facilities Sunday May marked an historic occasion in the life of Zion Glynde Lutheran Church. The opening of the newest building development was celebrated! Helene pointed out in her welcome speech, that there have been many such occasions in the building s history, noting plaques in 6 locations around the building! Plaque number 7 represents many years, months and hours of visioning, planning, demolition and building. A snapshot of some of the stages are pictured. As the plaque was unveiled, Klaus Schulz said a few words: I am honoured to be asked to unveil the plaque, but before I do I would like to thank the Redevelopment Team for the hard work they put into the planning and costing of the project. We met many times working into the night to find the best possible outcome for our new building. I would like to thank Sue Phillips and Michael Pilkington (architects) and their team for the planning and advice they gave us and also Daryl Crebin (Marshall & Brougham, Project Manager) for his help with the tendering and during the building. Also thanks to Sam Pearse (Construction Supervisor) and Shane Bunning (Construction Foreman) for the hard work they put in to deliver our new facilities. The text on the plaque is from John 8:12 "Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world' ". May this building be a light to the community, a place where people can come and be welcome a place where people can find and meet friends, and 12

most importantly, a place where people can meet Jesus. There was an atmosphere of excitement for the day, the well-attended, joyful service, and throughout the lunch fellowship. Guests were invited to tour the new facilities, many were blown away by the transformation! We look forward to all the ways God has in store for the use of this building! 14 An update from Nathan and Stacey Here is an update and greeting from Nathan and Stacey, working in West Asia. Recently they have announced they will be expecting another baby in November! Their son, Jesse, is now around 18 months old and just learning his first words Mum, Dad & Amin. Read below as they share a little about their experiences. We just clicked over the one year mark of living in this beautiful, complex and always changing part of the world. And we are excited to hear of all that has been happening with the big renovations over your side of the world through So, what is church like on this side of the world? In many ways church looks very similar, we meet in a large semi-modern building, we sing songs and of course drink coffee after the service. But in many ways church is very different. Our church is now surrounded with a tall 9-foot blue fence and upon arrival we are scanned with a metal detector and our bags are searched. The church occasionally receives threats from neighbouring terrorist groups and so policemen are often present outside A Baptism the worship service. But that doesn t stop God working! He loves His church and His Spirit is present. Since we have arrived we have seen two baptisms of local believers, in a large plastic container which serves as the baptismal font. We have listened as they have shared, through tears, the joy and freedom Jesus has brought to their lives. We have been blessed to meet several incredible local believers. One woman shared how when she became a follower she was given this ultimatum by her husband: You either choose Jesus or your children. She chose Jesus and he kicked her out onto the street. But God is faithful. She got her children back, although certainly counted the cost over the next 20 years. God s Spirit moved powerfully through her family as her siblings, children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren even her husband committed their lives to Christ. When we pray 14

together she always prays Jesus we are waiting for you. This year of language learning has helped us meet many people in the local church body and also in the community. We need good language skills to be able to support the church, serve the needy, build deep relationships and ultimately explain our faith. While we are learning language, in a small way, we have been able to help some of the millions of refugees that have flooded across the borders into this country. A few of the local churches work together to distribute food and clothes to the refugees. They have next to nothing in this world and so many needs. But friendship and love are key things we can offer as Christians. Thank you for warmly welcoming us at your church to share this journey with you. We rejoice with you in how He has faithfully provided a beautifully renovated building. May it be a blessing to your community. The Quilter s group have been busy! Here is a selection of the quilts made by the Tuesday quilting group. They are being sent to Ronald McDonald House, which is accommodation for families of seriously ill patients in the Women s & Children s Hospital. Pictured is Raelene who is part of that group, who meet every Tuesday night at 7pm. Praise God for their talents! At the Refugee Centre 15

All Creatures Great and Small 26th May 2017 turned out to be an inspirational day for the large Magnolias group who visited the Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Hospital at Plympton. This hospital officially opened in February and provides free emergency vet services to injured wildlife, taking in injured or orphaned wildlife with the aim of rehabilitation and release. We marvelled at God's creatures, but we also marvelled at Rae Campbell, co-founder of the hospital. She has been involved in wildlife rescue since she was 3 years old, and now at 73, in between marrying, living on rural properties in various parts of SA and raising 7 children, her commitment to saving our wonderful wildlife has continued unabated. She has rescued a baby koala that required feeding on an hourly basis for 9 months!!! However did she do it? God's creatures included a very talkative parrot, and a joey in its own special 'pouch' which gave new meaning to flexibility, with this legs somehow around its ears. Many were heard to say, 'How can that be comfortable??' The hospital itself is run on the same orderly lines, with equipment and hygiene standards, in line with 'human' hospitals. They rely solely on the generosity of others including financial and in kind support and are staffed almost exclusively by volunteers. Rae never tires of reminding others, particularly children, that they will one day be custodians of these precious creatures. She says, 'We are the koalas greatest enemy, but we are also their only hope of survival.' Keep an eye out for future Magnolias outings. They are fun!! 16
