He Ana Iki Spring 2016 Vice Province Spring Forum The Vice Province Spring Forum was held on the Campus of Chaminade University March 12-13, The Saturday session, attended by Sisters and `Ohana, focused on the Process Design Team s presentation on Oneness, information about what is happening around the Congregation, the transition process with Los Angeles and a follow up discussion of Sisters Care. Photo by Francine Costello Sisters Catherine Acain (HI) and Joan Goulden (L.A.) share happenings in their units, and Yes, the room was cold! Sunday s sessions included a general Corporation meeting, an explanation of a revised budgeting system that will more closely align with that used in the Los Angeles Province and a lively discussion of the topic Housing for Mission and Ministry.

The basket in the centerpiece held lots of local treats and went home with a lucky person from the table.

Roselani Enomoto, Diamond Jubilarian At an early age Roselani learned to serve the Dear Neighbor both at home in a large family active in Holy Rosary Church in Paia, Maui and also at Holy Rosary School where she first met the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is not an accident that the early years of helping the Sisters in the classroom, being an active choir and Sodality member, and sometimes enjoying breakfast after morning Mass in the Sisters kitchen led her to become a Sister of St. Joseph herself. It was also at Holy Rosary School where Sr. Mary Raymond Peplinski became her model and mentor. Photo: CSJLA Sr. Roselani introduces Fr. Alapaki Kim at a 2009 presentation on Hawaiiana to the members of the CLG, meeting in Honolulu. Through the Office for Social Ministry, she helped organize a Maui interfaith group of volunteers to provide services to the homebound. The organization is now known as Nā Hoaloha. Sr. Roselani is currently working with Maui Parishes and Nā Hoaloha to provide volunteer services specifically for seniors. Sisters outside Holy Rosary Church Roselani s sixty years as a CSJ have been filled with a variety of community living experiences and ministries including teaching, being a High School Counselor, serving with our Sisters in Japan, serving as the Director of the Hawai`i Vice Province and in the Honolulu Diocesan Office for Social Ministry. Roselani has not been idle since retiring from the Office for Social Ministry. She is an officer in a family corporation for the care of the family s cemetery on Maui and often assists with family gatherings and reunions. She is called upon by Hospice Maui to help with their quarterly meeting of hospice nurses. Visiting patients in Hale Makua nursing facility and being a Mass driver for an elderly woman are routine. She is also an active member of the St. Anthony Junior- Senior High School (her Alma Mater) School Board. CSJ community is of prime importance to Roselani. Local community prayer with sharing of the heart is a source of energy for her. She

continues to serve as called upon Justice coordinator/liaison, Vocation-Formation Committee, grant writing, Forum and/or Chapter work. Eyes open, ears attentive, spirit alert...sleeves rolled up for ministry The Calls to Action Remind Us To Participate In Communion Within the Earth Community By Linda Martin, CSJ `Ohana Website for Photo: thehawaiiherald.com The Enomoto Chorus Sr. Roselani and three of her siblings entertained at an MIS Veterans gathering in If she did not coin the phrase, she most certainly lives it: We Sisters of St. Joseph don t retire we recycle! Continuing in mission and ministry, Sr. Roselani is a true Daughter of Joseph. Website for Image: Circling the World with Love At the Congregational Chapter 2013, commitments were designed as Calls to Action. The first statement called us to deliberate about how our decisions and actions impact the Earth community, taking into account a balance between environment and humanity. In our small Maui community, there is an activism today indicating how this balance could be achieved. Sugarcane is known as a canoe plant a plant brought by the earliest Polynesian settlers of the islands. When my parents immigrated to Hawai`i as young children with their families, their main purpose was to work on Hawaiian sugarcane Wesite for Image: a sugarcane plantation. Plantation work was labor intensive and very hard but it surely provided the opportunity to better the lives of those who left their home country. Most had minimal (if any) education but they worked hard in the fields to provide for themselves and their families. Sugar cane was not an environmentally friendly crop. It required lots of water, acres of land and manpower. Poisonous pesticides and

Spraying young cane Website for Image: herbicides were used to fight off anything that would destroy the crops. Men and women were forced to work long hours for meager wages and to live in camps according to their ethnicity; this to prevent a mixing of the people. All of this was controlled by five main companies who were either descendants of missionaries or who had the money and political power. The pineapple industry was also becoming quite successful. The methods used to farm this fruit was even more damaging to the environment with its heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers. Today some of the pineapple lands have yet to recover from the harmful effects of these farming practices. To bring the soil to a normal ph is cost prohibitive. Website for Image: system broke apart, these foreigners became the powerful leaders. My parents came in the 20th century. By the time my father retired, the sugar cane and pineapple companies were filled with modern equipment, gasoline engines (no steam engines), sugar mills and canneries built with sophistication and water diverted from the mountains to feed the crops. The tourist industry was also prospering alongside these industries. The tribulations and trials created a very unique Hawaiian population. As immigrants from China, Japan, Portugal, Philippines, Puerto Rico and the native Hawaiians were thrown together in the fields to work, they formed some sort of bond through a language we call 'Pidgin' today. They ate in the fields and probably shared food from their home country with each other. These were experiences that engaged the mind, heart and will. The young children all went to the same school and helped to loosen the racial prejudices of the time. Even though the neighborhood was segregated ethnically, the children had the opportunity to befriend each other for the 7 hours or so in school. Today, the pineapple industry is gone except for a few farms. The sugar industry will end when the last mill in Pu`unene is shut down this year and the hundreds of workers are off to another beginning. There is a compassionate sentiment that permeates our plantation community with this sad ending. There is also an anxiety shared by the islanders that "we must act to protect our earth and recognize our culpability in her destruction" A Plantation house in Spanish Camp on Maui In the 18th and 19th centuries, Hawaii was becoming populated by foreigners, bringing diseases that killed the natives and as their social

In the past several years, I saw the younger generation working to bring back the farming techniques of 'ole Hawai`i, especially in Hana and Wailuku. The University of Hawaii, College of Tropical and Agricultural and Human Resources (CTHAR) run a program for Master Gardeners. Accepted students learn to "provide the public with unbiased, research based information and sustainable management practices in tropical horticulture suitable for home gardens, local landscapes, urban environments and the community". This program is affiliated with a university and found in all 50 states and Canada and is tuition free. It is vital to learn and pass on practices that enrich the environment rather than just taking from it. In Hawaii we also learn from the time honored and proven knowledge of our ancestors or kupuna as they are known. The kupuna are a very rich resource and should be tapped to contribute to the betterment of Hawaii. The native peoples of the mainland US, Canada, South America, and Japan all have their respected kupunas. Sr. Roselani Enomoto at the recycling center; Money from HI-5 recycling is used for the poor or for CSJ projects The Calls to Action involving communion within the Earth community is not as farfetched as one may think. It may be as simple as going out the front door of your dwelling and recycling your trash and giving the money to someone in need; or spinning down the green waste to feed the plants which is a very economical way of returning health to the earth. "We can change our behavior if we believe in the interdependence of humanity and nature in the whole Earth community." Website for Image: Traditional Taro Growing

Collector or Hoarder? In our conversations during Forum we talked about living simply, checking to see if we have what we need and if we have what someone else might need. We also talked about decluttering. Those conversations may have raised questions about collecting or hoarding; do you know the difference? The following information is taken from the website Collectors are proud of their possessions; Hoarders feel embarrassed. Collectors keep things well organized and maintained; Hoarders have things scattered randomly, often without any working organization the clutter sometimes results in loss of functional living space. Collectors enjoy their possessions and willingly show them to others; Hoarders are uncomfortable with other people seeing their things and sometimes refuse to let them be seen by anyone else. Collectors enjoy conversation about their possessions and sometimes attend meetings or conferences with others who have a similar interest; Hoarders often do not want to talk about their things and can feel ashamed or depressed even when they acquire more things. Some of the characteristics of hoarding include: acquiring and failing to discard a large number of things that seem to have little or no value having living spaces so cluttered that they cannot be used for their intended purpose not organizing or maintaining the saved items Collectors and Hoarders both keep things for the same reasons: sentimental value the things are or could be useful the things are thought to be beautiful So here are some questions you might want to ask as you keep things, declutter, acquire new things or give things away: Do I need it? How many do I already have? Do I love it? Do I have an immediate use for it? Do I have a plan to use it? Have I used it in the last year? Do I have enough already clear space for it? Do I have enough time and/or energy to take care of it? Can I get it somewhere else library, internet? Easter Eggs! Did you color Easter Eggs this year? If so, why? Maybe it was something you did when you were a child, or as it is said in Hawaiian Pidgin - small kid time. But did you know that as a Christian tradition it was probably borrowed from a pagan spring celebration in which colored

eggs were given as gifts representing the new birth of the season. Early Middle Eastern Christians saw the colored eggs as a perfect symbol of the new life of the risen Jesus and dyed eggs red to mimic his blood shed on the cross. Photo by Arlene Eldridge Sr. Tomasa Marcos and Sr. Anita Marie Rosco create beautiful Easter eggs with the help of `Ohana member Maki Gallagher (center). Photo by Maki Gallagher, CSJ `Ohana There is a legend that, after the Resurrection, Mary Magdalen went to speak with Emperor Tiberius. To her greeting Christ is risen, it is said that Tiberius replied he is no more risen than that egg is red. And you guessed it, the egg on his table turned red! Egg rolling, such as takes place on the White House lawn, can be interpreted as a symbol of rolling the stone away from the opening of Jesus tomb. The empty egg shell reminds some of the empty tomb, but do you think about that when you bite into a hollow chocolate egg? Where in the World are the Sisters of St. Joseph? Photo by Arlene Eldridge Flat Fontbonne showed up in the kitchen at Carondelet, Honolulu, where she was met by Sisters Jean Larm, Francine Costello and Sara Sanders.

Photo by Maki Gallagher, CSJ `Ohana Most of the Sisters on O`ahu gathered at Carondelet for a Valentine s Day Pizza Party organized by Sisters Giovanna and James Therese. The pizza was great but the stories about the boyfriends left behind when each one entered the community were even better!
