Mk 1: Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass 2001, 1998, 1970 CCD Dear Friends, Once again I announce how fortunate and blessed we are with some special angels who have allowed us to pay off the debt we have with the Diocese, as well as the restoration of the stained glass windows in our church. This is fantastic news! Let us pray for our benefactors, and for all the members of our parish whose regular contributions allow us to continue to grow in the love of the Lord! Welcome, Father Darryl Pepin! Yes, my good friend from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will be arriving on Monday for close-to three weeks for a little warm-up-calm-down vacation. During this time we will be taking a few days here and there to soak up the colors of Napa and Sonoma, to take a jaunt to Carmel and Monterey, and simply to relax in the goodness of God. So when you see him (he ll be the one walking around in shirt sleeves and no jacket) offer him a hearty welcome. May God bless our world with peace, and may we all work to spread the Good News of Jesus by our words and our actions. Have a great week. Father Fred The Demands of Discipleship Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out Repent! before he calls his new followers. Come after me, Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Winter Cold and Flu Season As always, you are reminded to use good common sense in the reception of Holy Communion during the annual cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from partaking of the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. In the same way, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace. Likewise, if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace or receiving Holy Communion from the communal chalice for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must be aware of such sensitive matters in the intimate life of the Christian community and we should expect that some will refrain from the sign of peace and the communal chalice out of care for our well-being and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety. Please be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply to those who are ill, especially those who suffer from contagious disease. It is a sign of consideration for others that those with flu-like symptoms remain at home. We encourage those who are ill to unite themselves to our Crucified Lord and offer their sufferings for their sanctification and that of the whole world.

You are the One to whom we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular position of protecting those who have no voice, from the unborn child in the womb to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure. Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice in the public square. With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Before Christmas break, eighth-grade students worked as facilitators to help their "Little Buddies" construct gingerbread houses. The objectives for this STEAM activity included designing the structure and choosing appropriate building/decorating materials needed to build a gingerbread house. Because many of the initial houses collapsed, the students also needed to persevere and use problem solving skills to revise their designs and rebuild. Walk for Life 2018 Renowned pro-life activists and a former abortionist turned pro -life obstetrician will speak to an expected 50,000 people at the 14th Annual Walk for Life in San Francisco on Saturday, January 27. The Walk for Life aims to send a vocal and visual message that people of the West Coast stand for life as they peacefully protest abortion. It is a rapidly-growing West Coast event around the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court case that legalized abortion on demand in There will be Mass at 9:30 am celebrated by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone at St. Mary s Cathedral. The rally begins at 12:30 pm in San Francisco s Civic Center Plaza. The Walk, down Market Street, begins at 1:30 pm. Last year s Walk drew over 50,000 people. For complete information about the Walk, visit or call Eric Genuis is a world-renowned pianist and composer; his music is richly entertaining and spiritually renewing. Attending an Eric Genuis concert is a uniquely personal experience! Eric will be performing with a world-class violinist, cellist, and vocalist at: St. Raymond Catholic Church Shannon Ave, Dublin, CA Tuesday, Jan 23, at 7 pm. Admission is free! This concert is a perfect lead-in to The Walk For Life - West Coast, which will take place just four days after the concert. So, join us on Tuesday, January 23, for an evening of music and inspiration... then, stand up for Life on Saturday. For more information, contact John Vitz at or John@angelusmusic.com. You can hear some of Eric s music on his website at Questions for Reflection Mark 1:14-20 In today s Gospel reading, we hear the first words of Jesus spoken in the Gospel of Mark. Why do you think Jesus connects the kingdom of God with the need for repentance? Jonah 3:1-5, 10 The Ninevites took seriously the warning to repent from the prophet Jonah. What motivates you to repent from your sins? 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 In his First Letter to the Corinthians, we hear how Paul is convinced that the return of Christ is imminent; in fact, time is running out. How do you think Paul would react knowing Jesus has still not returned?
