Open our minds and hearts to a greater awareness and deeper appreciation of your countless blessings. Transform us through the power of your Spirit to nurture a stewardship way of life marked by faith- illed prayer, service to our neighbor, and generous sharing. Teach us to be faithful servants of your gifts. With Mary s help, may we return ten-fold the gifts entrusted to us. We pray thorough Christ our Lord. Amen. Tithing: When it comes to inancial support of our church family, the biblical ideal is a tithe or 10% of one s income. Some recommend giving 5% to church and 5% to charity. Most Catholics who tithe reach this ideal gradually. In this area of stewardship, one of the most important steps to consider is to become an intentional giver as opposed to a loose change giver. An intentional giver is one who has the willing diligence to do the math, that is, to look at his/her annual income and then prayerfully and intentionally decide what percentage should be set aside for the support of the church and for charity. Ray Clark who is having the Masses this weekend while Fr. Tony is on vacation. No Need to Pledge A pastor went to get a haircut. The barber, who also happened to be a parishioner, took the opportunity to tell the pastor all the reasons why the barber was not going to complete his stewardship pledge card. I don t think we should have to promise to give money to God. We should give what our heart tells us at the time. I like to be able to just put in the collection whatever I have that week. After his haircut the pastor handed the barber $1 for the $10 haircut, saying, I like to give what my heart tells me just whatever I have in my pocket at the time. Father, the barber protested, I can t pay my rent, take care of my expenses and run my business if everyone would do that. Neither can God, the pastor replied. 5 Stewardship Prayer: Lord, help me to recognize all the gi s you have given me, those seen and unseen. Help me to understand that I am accountable for these gi s and to share them joyfully just as genera ons before me have done. Help me be more generous with all my gi s without expec ng anything in return. Through prayer, help me to listen to your will and not to ask for my own desires. Help me open my heart, to be more grateful, forgiving and loving. Help me have the courage to be your hands, feet, and voice to con nue your work. Lord, help me be all you ve called me to be and to always love as you love. Amen. INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK: As human beings, we desire to find happiness. This desire is so strong that we o en go to great lengths to discover and obtain it. Unfortunately, our search some mes brings us to the wrong places. We mistakenly think that money, certain possessions, social status, popularity, and even power and control can sa sfy the longing that exists in our hearts. Time and again, one a er another, these things come up empty and we find ourselves with the same unfulfilled longing gnawing at us deep within. It is only the kingdom of God that can sa sfy our desire and that ache. We are made and hardwired for this. When we discover it, we know that we have found something very special--a pearl of great price. Then, everything comes together and is put in proper order: our rela onship with God, others, ourselves, and even the universe in which we live. The Diocese of Owensboro seeks to help all people who have been sexually abused, especially those abused by a person working, either paid or unpaid, for the Church. Sunday matters because the Sunday Eucharist is the source of the Church s spirituality, and Sunday is the day when people gather in the greatest numbers. When we celebrate Sunday well, the power of the liturgy moves hearts and deepens commitment to being Christ s disciples in the parish, the neighborhood, and the world. 2. Welcome matters because true Christian hospitality gives us the opportunity to draw new people into our community, to help those in need, and to see Christ in all who come to our parish and live in our neighborhood. When we welcome warmly, we bring the Good News to life and encourage growth in faith. 3. Belonging matters because people s experience of feeling engaged in the parish makes them open to an encounter with Christ. When parishioners develop a deep sense of belonging, they begin to see themselves as missionary disciples who help the faith community grow and reach out beyond the parish. 4. Witness matters because seekers and believers need to hear faith stories to help them encounter Christ in a personal way. Collectively, parishioners have many stories about how their lives have been graced through the power of the Holy Spirit. When we share these stories, we give witness to the power of God s unconditional love and become agents of evangelization to others. 5. Mission matters because Jesus said, For this purpose I have come. We are called to continue his work as a community of disciples going out with joy to the peripheries of our parish and our neighborhoods. When we reach out as a parish, people encounter Christ and come to know mercy, healing, and joy. Mission directed parishes give public witness to gospel values in society.
