2 CALL TO WORSHIP Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. The brightness of God s light shines upon all the nations. All are welcomed to the brightness of God s dawn. God gathers us from far away and carries us. With radiant eyes, with rejoicing hearts, we receive the abundance God gives. We respond in praise as we worship God together. *HYMN #151 We Three Kings of Orient Are *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, we confess that we have not embraced your love. Christ has come into the world, and yet we do not know him. He has called us to be his own, and yet we do not accept him. Forgive us, God of grace. Show us your mercy and truth until we know in fullness your good news of great joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, God is for us and not against us. For that very reason God sent the Son into the world - not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. 3 *Affirmation of Faith Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayer of Ordination and Laying on of Hands The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Gracious and eternal God, with joy we give you all thanks and praise. Throughout the ages you have been faithful to your covenant people whom you have called out of bondage and redeemed to be your own. In every time and place you have chosen servants from among your people to point the way to salvation. We are grateful for ancestors in the faith who followed without fear, placing their trust in you alone. We give you thanks for judges and monarchs who ruled in righteousness and peace. We praise you for prophets and apostles who spoke your bold words of mercy and of truth. We thank you for men and women in every age who have nurtured your people in faith and faithfulness. Above all we praise you for Jesus Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life to set others free. Anointed by your Holy Spirit, he proclaimed your reign on earth, revealing your saving love in all he said and did. God of grace, pour out your Holy Spirit on Tommy, Ann Marie, Penny, Stephen, and Rebekah, that they may be your faithful elders in the church. Give them prudence and sound judgment, wisdom and courage to order the life of the church in obedience to your Word. Nourish them in the life of the Holy Spirit, that they may exercise the ministry of discipline with humility and compassion. Guide them in governance, on this session and in every court of the church, that they may be servant leaders following Christ who came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life to set others free. Give them joy in their walk of faith and a sure sense of your abiding presence for their work of ministry. Gracious God, pour out your Spirit of power and truth upon the whole church that we may be for you a holy people, baptized to serve you in the world. Sustain this congregation in ministry.

4 Ground us in the gospel, secure our hope in Christ, strengthen our service to the outcast, and increase our love for one another. Help us be with those this day who are in need: Those suffering from illness, sadness, isolation, violence, or any other distress. Show us the transforming power of your grace in our life together, that we may be servants of the gospel, offering a compelling witness in the world to the good news of Christ Jesus our Lord who taught us to pray saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION The Session will ordain and install elected church officers for the Class of 2019 and Youth Elder for the Class of 2017 during morning worship today. Elders to be ordained and installed for the Class of 2019 are Tommy Bell, Ann Marie Conti, Stephen Harshbarger, and Penny Moore. Youth Elder to be ordained and installed for the Class of 2017 is Rebekah Mayfield. The Session invites all clergy and elders to join in the prayer

5 of ordination and the laying on of hands. Following the service, members of the congregation are encouraged to greet and show their support to these new officers. We express our sincere appreciation to the following elders who faithfully served Christ and now rotate from their position. Those elders rotating off the Class of 2016 are Laura Mahony, Pat O Shields, Sandy Sharpe, Bill Tumblin, and Youth Elder Reid Weinel. NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Please sign up to serve in our nursery during January and February through the following link: or by contacting Cindy Clemmer at cclemmer@charter.net or call WINTER WEATHER INFORMATION As we move into winter, the Worship and Property Committees will work together regarding the church schedule. We will follow the Greenville County Schools schedule during the week. Please check WYFF 4 for information regarding Sunday worship services. Updates will also be posted to the church s Facebook page, and we will try to send out reminders. 5 TH SUNDAY FOOD DRIVE The Commitment Committee sponsors food drives for BackPack Blessings on the 5 th Sunday of each month. When grocery shopping, think individually sized child-friendly, nourishing, microwavable, easily prepared, stable shelf life foods for weekend food meals in the absence of school lunches. By January 29 th, place your donations in the bin available in the entry of the Fellowship Hall. ATTENDANCE PADS In order to have a record of your attendance in worship, please be sure you sign the Attendance Pads provided in each pew. Thank you. CFC KEYS One set of CFC keys are missing. If you have them, please return them to the church office. Thank you. GROCERY BAGS NEEDED BackPack Blessings has an ongoing need for your grocery bags! Grocery bags are used to pack the food distributed to the 293 BackPack kids each week. Instead of the bags cluttering up your kitchen or being thrown away, please bring them to the church and place them in the tubs in the entry of the Fellowship Hall. Thank you! BACKPACK BLESSINGS GENTLY USED SHOE DRIVE Beginning November 28 th through February 26 th, BPB is collecting shoes (torn shoes cannot be accepted) for Funds2orgs.com. They hope to fill 300 bags of 25 pairs per bag. BPB will receive $.40 per pound of shoes donated which will go toward the purchase of food for the BackPack children. CHILDREN S MINISTRY CHILDREN S DIVISION 2017 KICKOFF PLANNING MEETING On Sunday, February 5 th, Children s Division will have a meeting to kick off 2017, reviewing major events dates and getting interested volunteers involved. Those who are interested in working with our children, in any small or large way, or are just interested in what we are planning, we would love for you to join us! We will be meeting at 12:30 pm after the Mission "Souper Bowl" Luncheon planned for that day in the CFC. We plan to finish the meeting around 1:30 pm. WORSHIP TRAINING SESSION will be on Sunday, February 12 th after worship for those children in K5-5th grade who are interested in being bell ringers, acolytes or ushers.
