1 Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Epiphany November 18, 2018 St. John s Anglican Church Lunenburg, Nova Scotia Priest-in-Charge: Reverend Alvin Westgate Organist & Choir Director: Barbara Butler To all who mourn or need comfort, To all who are weary and need rest, To all who seek friendship, To all who desire to grow in relationship with God To all who yearn to pray, To all who need a Saviour, And to all whoever will worship, This Church of St. John s opens wide its doors and in the name of Christ our Lord, says - WELCOME. Alvin s Message Welcome to the Church of Saint John Today the Holy Gospel has two parts. The first two verses Jesus foretells of the destruction of the Holy City of Jerusalem. The temple and the city was destroyed by the Roman legions in 7O,CE. At that time there was an insurrection by Zealots and other groups; the Roman Empire responded quickly and with full military power killed and destroyed anything in their path. The Christian community dispersed throughout Palestine; in so doing they carried The Good News with them. What large stones! Most of the temple stones were thirty-seven and a half feet long, 18 feet wide and 12 feet thick. Powerful engines of war, by the Romans, quickly reduce the temple and the city to rubble. All that is left of the second temple is what today we call The Wailing Wall. This is the foundation upon which the temple sat. The second part of the Gospel story reminds us not to be lead astray. Many will come in my name and they will lead you astray. Jesus tells the disciples and us to stand firm in the faith that Jesus has delivered to us. His word can not be taken away. Love prevails in the end. The cross is the victory and the path we are to travel. Fr. Glory, Glory, hallelujah, Lord we praise your Holy name (repeat) Amen Music by Carl Haywood from Mass for Grace 3 The Collect of the Day Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of the world. Free us from all that darkens and ensnares us, and bring us to eternal light and joy; through the power of him who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE FIRST BOOK OF SAMUEL On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?" After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: "O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head." As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, "How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine." But Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time." Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him." And she said, "Let your servant find favour in your sight." Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, "I have asked him of the Lord." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 1 SAMUEL 1:4-20 4

3 PSALM REFRAIN Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you. I have said to the Lord, You are my Lord, my good above all other. All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble among the people. R But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied. Their libations of blood I will not offer, nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. R O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who uphold my lot. My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed I have a goodly heritage. R I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. R My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me up to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. R You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. R Psalm 16 A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds," he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HEBREWS 10:11-25 Gradual Hymn I Will Trust in the Lord (No. 12 in Black Binder) I will trust in the Lord (til I die). Sister will you trust in the Lord ( til you die). Brother will you trust in the Lord ( til you die). I m gonna treat my neighbor right (til I die). I m gonna hold my saviour s hand (til I die). 5 Gospel Reader The Lord be with you. People And also with you. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs." The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. For this we pray to the Lord, saying, People: Lord, hear our prayer. Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen Baptism Procession Hymn #37 We'll Sing in the Morning Thanksgiving over the Water - The celebrant blesses the water. The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water by the power of your Holy Spirit, that Chloe 7 who you have called may be cleansed from sin and born again to new life, and may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptismal Covenant Let us join with Chloe who is committing herself to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, The Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? People I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? People I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? People I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? People I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? People I will, with God s help. Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? People I will, with God s help. The Baptism Chloe Christine Bower, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Holy Chrism I sign you with the cross +, and mark you as Christ s own for ever. 8

Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer over the Gifts Holy God, in this eucharist we renew our baptismal covenant. Help us, through our offering this day, to renounce all things that draw us from your love. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. In our unending joy we echo on earth the song of the angels in heaven as we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (Sung) Holy, Holy (repeat) Holy, Lord God of hosts Heaven and earth are filled with your glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, of the Lord Hosanna in the highest (repeat) Music by Grayson Warren Brown from A Mass for a Soulful People We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was 10

6 handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. We offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. The gifts of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God. Church Humour A CAR FOR CHRISTMAS A young man had recently passed his driving test and decided to ask his clergyman father if there was any chance of him getting a car for Christmas, which was still a couple months away. 'Okay, Son,' said his father 'Tell you what I'll do: you do some serious "Christmas prep" ~ get your grades up to 'A's and 'B's, work on your Bible study, and get that ridiculously long hair cut off ~ and I'll consider the matter very seriously.' December rolled around and the boy went back to his father and asked again about a Christmas car. 'Son,' said the Reverend, 'I'm really impressed by your commitment to your studies. Your latest grades are excellent and the work you've put into your Bible studies is very encouraging. Unfortunately, there were 3 conditions to our agreement, and I'm sorry to say I'm very disappointed that you haven't had your hair cut yet.' The minister's son was a smart young man who was never lost for an answer. 'Well Dad,' he quickly replied, 'In the course of my Bible studies I've noticed the illustrations of Moses, Samson, John the Baptist, and especially Jesus, all depict them with long hair. I'm just following in the footsteps of the great men in Biblical history.' His father smiled and said 'I'm proud of you, Son. You're absolutely right; all the great men of the Bible certainly did have long hair! And since you're following in their footsteps, I take it you'll be content to walk everywhere.' When his son frowned he added, 'None of them had cars, either.' Parish Contacts PRIEST-IN-CHARGE: Rev.
