1 I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD HEART OF CATECHESIS JESUS CHRIST...SON OF GOD AND SON OF MAN Lesson 1 WHAT IS A CREED? The Creed is a summary of our Catholic Faith. It is called a Creed because the first word is CREDO which in Latin means I believe. The Nicene Creed came from an Ecumenical Council (gathering of bishops called together by the pope). This council was held in 325 AD in the city of Nicaea (thus the name Nicene). It was a response to the Arian Heresy, which denied the Divinity of Jesus Christ. It is the Nicene Creed we profess at Sunday Mass. Whoever says I believe says I pledge myself to what we believe. [CCC # ] DID YOU KNOW? The Church celebrates the feast of the Most Holy Trinity the Sunday after Pentecost. But every Sunday is a celebration of the Holy Trinity. Listen at Mass this Sunday and notice how often The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are mentioned. Although He is the Son of the Father, this does not imply that the Father existed before Him that there was a time when the Son did not exist. The Second Person of the Holy Trinity was not created by the Father or made by Him. The Son has always existed with the Father just as the Light radiates constantly from the flame of a candle. REVIEW: USE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS AS A LEAD IN TO RE-INTRODUCE THE HOLY TRINITY THE HOLY TRINITY THERE IS ONE GOD WHO IS THREE DIVINE PERSONS: GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON, AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. MYSTERY A HIDDEN REALITY REVEALED BY GOD FELLOW CATECHISTS PLEASE LEAD YOUR STUDENTS THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE NICENE CREED SLOWLY. HELP THEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE SON IS NOT IN ANY WAY INFERIOR TO THE FATHER. YOU MAY WANT TO READ THROUGH CCC # TO REVIEW FOR YOUR OWN INFORMATION. EMPHASIZE THOSE VERSES OF THE CREED WHICH MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THE SON IS GOD [e.g. GOD FROM GOD, LIGHT FROM LIGHT, TRUE GOD FROM TRUE GOD ]. I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY GOD THE FATHER THE FIRST PERSON OF THE HOLY TRINITY THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH ALL KNOWING, ALL LOVING, ALL POWERFUL, ETERNAL MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE MATTER, TIME, SPACE, ENERGY...AND SPIRIT [Angels and souls of men]

4 Page 4 I BELIEVE I BELIEVE IN ONE LORD, JESUS CHRIST JESUS CHRIST THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD THE SECOND PERSON OF THE HOLY TRINITY MADE MAN; THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF THE FATHER BORN OF THE FATHER BEFORE ALL AGES THIS MEANS HE WAS NOT CREATED. THE SON OF GOD WAS NEVER NOTHING. ETERNALLY EXISTING FROM THE FATHER. HE ALWAYS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE. CREATE TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM NOTHING; ONLY GOD CAN CREATE ETERNAL WITHOUT BEGINNING OR END; ONLY GOD ALWAYS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE GOD FROM GOD LIGHT FROM LIGHT TRUE GOD FROM TRUE GOD BEGOTTEN, NOT MADE, CONSUBSTANTIAL WITH THE FATHER CONSUBSTANTIAL means that the Son is of the same substance as the Father. The Son is a Divine Person as the Father is a Divine Person. SUBSTANCE is THE INNER REALITY OF A PERSON OR A THING. The Three Divine Persons in the Holy Trinity share One DIVINE NATURE. DIVINITY is THE QUALITY OF BEING GOD; NATURE is WHAT A PERSON OR THING IS. The Father, the Son [and the Holy Spirit] are all DIVINE. Together they are all ONE GOD. THROUGH HIM ALL THINGS WERE MADE THE SON OF GOD ALWAYS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE! Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. +Amen. (Opening prayer for Holy Trinity Sunday) This beautiful painting below and on page one is an artistic attempt to depict Sister Lucia s vision of the Holy Trinity with God the Father at the top of the painting, the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son who is on the Cross. Although this is not what the Holy Trinity looks like, images like this help us to understand in a way the three Divine Persons and their Relationship with each other.
