1 July 30, 2015 Volume 49, Issue 8 Garden Grove Church of the Nazarene Euclid Street Garden Grove CA (714) church-office@ggnaz.org B E THE FULL EXPRESSION Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. 1 John 4:11-12 I hope this is a familiar passage to you. If you have been following Christ for a long time you can probably read right through it and not catch its full impact. Read the sentences highlighted by the bold font. It concludes with, his love is brought to full expression in us! That is a high standard of love that John is placing on people loved by God. We, and I hope you re a part of we, are agents of the full expression of God s love. So, how do we do that? There s not enough room here to list all the endless ways we can be full expressions of God s love to a culture that s connected, but still incredibly lonely. But one way is to speak lovingly into people s lives. Here are some suggested phrases for you to start to use until you mean it. I love you. We all want to be loved and we all want to hear it. Some will protest that they don t care what anybody thinks; but we all know that in their heart of hearts they are desperately wrong! I m thankful for you. Be specific and be frequent with your expressions of thankfulness to others. You are one of a kind! God has made us all so unique. It is a blessing and encouragement to people when you are very specific about the uniqueness, skills and abilities that God has given them. I forgive you. You ve been forgiven, do the same for others. Do your own Bible study and find the shocking results of choosing not to do this! As a fellow follower of Jesus I m going to hold you to high standards, but I m going do it with a lot of grace and mercy. We don t do anyone any favors when we don t gently hold each other accountable. You need it and I need it. I m cheering for you and I believe in you. Everybody needs cheerleaders. Hebrews says there is a great crowd of witnesses in heaven cheering us on. That s good to know, but it s even better to have some tangible cheerleaders encouraging us on. Most people have self doubts from time to time, but someone believing in you can make a huge difference in your life. Many have accomplished things that astonished even themselves because somebody believed in them. Be the full expression to someone this month! Bring your own food, camping gear, tackle etc. CA fishing license is required for age 16 and older. Play in the Hurkey Creek Pond for free. Swim and play at the new Lake Hemet Waterpark and Beach for $10 per person per day (not included in the camping fee). Join in the optional Saturday night BBQ dinner for an additional $4 charge. Make your reservations ASAP. See or contact Jason Kindell for more information. Family Beach Day Friday, August 28 Come celebrate the last few days of summer at our annual Family Beach Day. Pastor Pat will be at Huntington Beach State Beach around noon to reserve a spot with a fire ring. She will bring fire wood, mustard and ketchup. You can call the church office after noon for the lifeguard station number; enter at Magnolia Street. Bring your own food, beverages, towels, chairs, etc. Parking/entrance fee is $15 per vehicle. Picnic in the Park September 13 Our summer finale is held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. Bring your own food plus some to B AB Y S H O WE R A U G U S T 15 Men and women, come to this Saturday event for Angeline Ramage and her baby girl (due October 25). Shower starts at 11:00 a.m. She is registered at Target and Wal Mart. Watch for more details. W O M E N S M I N I S T R I E S Two Little Words John 11:35 Although this verse Jesus Wept is short, it still packs a punch. These two little words speak of Jesus great compassion for people. And although this phrase is somewhat sad, it lifts us up. For this reminds us that Jesus knows exactly what we re going through in every phase of our life. He knows the pain, the strain, the stress of living in this world. He also knows the joy, the beauty, the love that surrounds us. He also knows what it means to have a bad day, to grieve for a loss, to be betrayed, to be treated harshly, to not fit in the norm. Thus we are free to run to Him for any little thing. He s one man who will always listen. In fact, He is straining to hear from you. Talk to Him today. Tell Him all. He ll understand. - Quiet Moment for Busy Days: Encouraging thoughts for Women Book Club September 19 11:00 Fellowship Hall Book: Undetected by Dee Henderson Commander Mark Bishop is deliberately low-key: "I'm in the Navy." But commanding the ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada, keeping her crew trained and alert during ninetyday submerged patrols, and being prepared to launch weapons on valid presidential orders, carries a burden of command like few other jobs in the military. Mark Bishop is a man who accepts that responsibility, and handles it well. And at a time when tensions are escalating around the Pacific Rim, the Navy is glad to have him. Gina Gray would love to be married. She has always envisioned her life that way. A breakup she didn't see coming, though, has her focusing all her attention on what she does best--ocean science research. She's on the cusp of a major breakthrough, and she needs Mark Bishop's perspective and help. Because what she told the Navy she's figured out is only the beginning. Nursery grade 2 meet downstairs; grades 3 6 meet in the Children s Center. Grades 7 12 are in the Youth Center. Ask a greeter where your child s group meets. Our Children s Center and Youth Center are upstairs (above the fellowship hall). Adults: College & Career meet above the fellowship hall last room on the west side. C H I L D R E N S M I N I S T R I E S Sunday School Join us for Sunday School Sunday mornings at 9:00. Donna Alves teaches the younger set, K- Grade 2; she also teaches the preschoolers during church time. Pastor Pat teaches Grades 3-6 in the upstairs Children s Dept. rooms. Vacation Bible School VBS is probably going on as you read this! Please pray for the children and families we are reaching, and all the people here working our Bible School. The closing program will be Sunday, August 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pat s Thoughts The Friendship Class which uses the Nazarene curriculum and The Books of the Bible Class meet in the fellowship hall. Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Adult Bible Study led by Pastor Dan meets in the fellowship hall. College/Career meets above the fellowship hall on the west end. Teens meet with Pastor Gina in the youth center. VBS Reflections: Our theme this year was Home Town Nazareth, Where Jesus was a Kid. We re exploring that Jesus was pretty much a regular kid like the others as he was growing up. He had a family, a name, a home. Jesus went to church, and He served others. Jesus name means Yahweh is salvation. This name was so important, an angel delivered it! That name revealed God s purpose; it gave us a promise of salvation and is a reminder of God s saving love. A child s name is a powerful thing. Spoken in love, it s a blessing. Spoken in anger (with middle name attached!) it s a warning. And people of all ages are flattered when someone remembers and uses their name kindly. As members of Christ s family, we share a common name: Christian. 4 G G N AZ Y O U T H M I N I S T R I E S "From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." -Ephesians 4:16 This was the camp verse for Teen Camp this year. Our theme was REACT. Here are a couple reflections I have. You matter! God made you for a reason. There is no one exactly like you. Even identical twins have different fingerprints. If a part of your body decided it didn't matter and stopped working, or left all together, you would get sick, injured or possibly die. Even the tiniest parts of you body matter. When you loose blood (from an accident or donation) you get weaker. If your tiny ACL tears, you will probably fall down. Those are only two of the small parts of your body. You matter more than any part of your body. God sees you even when you think no one notices or cares for you. There are people watching you from afar that get inspiration from your example, whether good or bad. What you do matters. Everyone has a part to play. I have helped people recover from a torn meniscus. The crazy thing about a torn meniscus is that people can live with one for years. Sometimes they don't even feel the pain, until they try to do something (run, jump, climb stairs). There are different types of meniscus tears. Some stay together but there is still a tear. One tear is called a bucket tear where the tear looks like there is a hole in the middle like a bucket with a handle. We all need to work together. Even when our community is still connected, but we are missing, there is still a tear in our community. Our community needs all of us to be whole. You are needed in your neighborhood, school, work, church, and other organizations God has placed you in. Everyone needs to keep growing. Our bodies are continually growing. Your bones are about 10 years old, bone tissues are continually growing and rebuilding. Your liver is about 5 months, your lungs are a couple weeks to about a year (depending on the part of your lung), skin is less than a month old. No matter your age, continue to grow closer to God and His people. Continue to search after God's will for your life and ask God how He can use you for His purposes. August 7: The youth ministry is going to help make and deliver lunches to the homeless in our community. We will meet at the church by 9:30 a.m. and be back around 12 noon. Let me know if you are able to help. August 15: Our District NYI (Youth) are getting together for a service opportunity. We will be going to help a church in one of our beach cities. We will leave GGNaz at 9:00 a.m. Let me know if you are interested so I can pass along more details. August 20 & 27: Youth Movie Days! The last set of movies we will be watching are the first "Indiana Jones" movies and one chosen at a later date. NMI is issuing you a challenge to see which group can garner the most education box tops between now and September. These box tops are found on many items commonly purchased in grocery and convenience stores. The winning group will receive a pizza party fun night hosted by your NMI council. 2. Bring your box tops in and be a part of something great for our Sun Valley Indian School in Arizona NMI Books (and CD s) Each year, we get six new NMI books. These books are mostly written by missionaries or retired missionaries, telling stories about their experiences on the mission field or issues they or other Christians face around the world. Check out the selection in the foyer and take one home. Be sure to return the book or CD so others can read it. Remember to sign the label inside the cover so you can be rewarded at the end of the church year.
