Volume 1, Issue 1 Anglican Parish of Wonthaggi & Inverloch Bass Coast Tidings Anglican Diocese of Gippsland. Meet our new Rector Inside this issue: St Georges Wonthaggi 2 Hat does the next 100 years hold in store? The Ascension, Inverloch 3 Meet Peter Anderson 3 Anne Peryrman s path to Ordination You are Special Our new rector is the Reverend Graeme Peters. He comes to us from the Diocese of Chile where he & has family have been serving with the Church Missionary Society since Graeme is married to Jane & they have three children: Benjamin (17), Samuel (12) & Martin (9). Graeme was inducted into the parish in a moving ceremony at our church in Inverloch on Thursday the 9th of July. The church was full to welcome Graeme & his family with representatives from many churches present. Graeme s experience in student ministry & church planting should provide an interesting stimulus to bring growth to our parish. We wish him well & pray for much fruit in hi s ministry. News Out Loud 5 Also in this issue: What is Cursillo, p.7 Thanks to all our Op Shop volunteers. p.6. Meet our newbie, Janette Elder. P6. What s happening with the youth. P.7. What s in a name? A lot is in a name. The Lord gave new names to many of the people he chose to work with. Jacob became Israel, Saul became Paul, Levi became Barnabas. In reach case the Lord showed something of his work in their lives through the name change. The name change of this parish newsletter doesn t have the same transcendence but it is our hope that as folk in the area are captivated by the ebb & flow of the tides along our beautiful coastline, that they would also hear something of the glad tidings of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. It is our prayer that the news & interest items shared in this production would also cheer hearts & encourage us in all our mission to announce glad tidings of great joy to the world.

Page 2 Ba s s Coa st T idings Sp ring St Georges, Wonthaggi The Congregation of St Georges was delighted to be able to celebrate this year its centenary. Wonderful celebrations were held to give thanks to God for all his mercies over these last one hundred years. How will the next 100 years be for St. Georges? What is your vision for the church? What does the next 100 years hold in store As a congregation St Georges faces many exciting challenges as Wonthaggi continues to grow as a town. It is of vital importance that we strengthen our outreach into the town & engage with the community. Amongst the plans we have for 2011 is the launching of a weekly community meal aimed at providing a healthy meal for local families & a place for people of all ages to be able to share a meal with others. We are also planning on beginning contemporary service aimed at families & people looking for a freer approach to worship. This will begin in March at 11:00am each Sunday. The current 10:30 am traditional service will most likely go back to a 9:00 am timeslot. How will the next 100 years be for St Georges? What is your vision for your church? Maybe you could write something for our next issue. New Web Site Our new Website is almost ready to hit cyberspace. We have now reserved the domain name basscoastanglican.org.au This new name reflects the extent of our ministry throughout this Bass Coast area from Inverloch to Kilcunda. We continue to be officially the Parish of Wonthaggi / Inverloch but hopefully the name of our Web Page will be found by people with all sorts of queries relating to faith & worship in this area. We also hope that those of you with internet access will start checking out the site for all sorts of information about our parish life. Not only is our parish getting as new website but the Diocese has also recently upgraded its website & its looking great. You can view online the latest edition of the Gippsland Anglican & stay abreast of all the activities across our Diocese.

Ba s s Coa st T idings Sp ring Page 3 The Church of the Ascension Inverloch The Ascension in Inverloch is a bit younger than the Wonthaggi Congregation but nevertheless has a long & interesting history. It has gone through many changes over the years but with recent extension work done at the back of the church, it is in excellent shape to serve us with whatever activity it is needed for. Each Sunday at 9:00 am & each Tuesday at 10:00 am we have communion services. The services are traditional in nature but the congregation warmly welcomes all who visit. Inverloch is a popular seaside resort & the church becomes the base of a Scripture Union outreach to families holidaying in the area over the New Year period. Inverloch is a popular seaside resort & many visitors come to the church each summer. This story can fit words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an Meet Peter Anderson. Peter is our Rector s warden at Inverloch & is one of the stalwarts of the church, regularly leading worship as a lay reader & heading up many other ministries in the church. Peter was a school teacher until his retirement serving in schools in Melbourne, northern Victoria, & Gippsland. He is married to Mary & they are both actively involved in many community groups such as the U3A choir & Probus. Peter & Mary also run the Bible study in Inverloch as well as the Parish bookstall which is always appreciated by everybody. Caption describing picture or graphic.

Page 4 Ba s s Coa st T idingsnewsletter Sp ring Anne Perryman s Path to Ordination I was first aware of God s call on my life 25 years ago. He turned my life upside down as He changed my priorities and showed me a better way of living and loving. I quietly ignored God s call on my life to ordained ministry for many years, continually coming up with reasons as to why I was unsuitable. He kept calling and I eventually ran out of excuses and my journey of faith started in earnest. I have worked in a voluntary part time capacity in the Parish of Wonthaggi / Inverloch for 10 years. My work has encompasses everything from working with our young people to taking services in the aged care facilities and everything in between. He turned my life upside down as He changed my priorities and showed me a better way of living and loving. I also work with the local welfare agencies in the community on many projects. The Combined Welfare group is currently organizing 195 Christmas hampers for local people in need. The group also oversees the NILS ( No Interest Loans Scheme) program. Ongoing commitment to the Bass Coast Volunteer Pastoral Care Program will hopefully see the inception early next year of a new inter denominational pastoral care program in the Bass Coast area. I also support Kairos Outside a program of Christian support for women who have a relative or friends who are or have been incarcerated in the state correctional facilities or prisons. I was ordained as a deacon in February this year and will be ordained as a priest on the 13 th November 2010 at the Cathedral in Sale at 11am. Hopefully having an extra priest in the Parish will allow for more flexibility with worship services. On a personal note Lance had 2 daughters (Kristen and Dana) and I had 2 daughters (Jenna and Rebecca) when we married, 24 years ago, and we have a son (David). We are blessed with 7 grandchildren (so far!) and live in Cape Paterson and enjoy walking on the beach daily with our dog Wilbur. Life is always exciting and interesting (and often tiring!) and we never know what God has in store for us. We are truly blessed and are grateful for our family and friends. Praise the Lord. Anne, together with other candidates at her ordination as deacon.

Ba s s Coa st T idings Sp ring Page 5 You are Special! Over this last September school holiday break, close on forty children participated in the You are special program organized by Wendy McBurnie & her team of capable volunteers in The Church of the Ascension. Fun was had by all, including the leaders, as a series of games, craft activities, stories & songs entertained the children & taught them important truths from God s Word. A special focus this time was the theme He s got the whole world in his hands. The children learnt about different countries & our rector, Graeme & his wife Jane told us all about Chile & taught us a song in Spanish. A special Christmas program will also be run for the children from the Inverloch primary school during the first two weeks of December. Next year we are hoping to begin a weekly after school club to continuing building on this important contact. Carol Hurst tells the children a story. News out Loud Liz Watkins. Each Tuesday evening between 6 and 7pm the local community radio station, 3MFM, has a program News Out Loud. Vision Australia volunteers read articles from three local newspapers, the Sentinal Times, the Star and the Advertiser. The audience is predominantly vision impaired people. The program is prepared and recorded on Tuesday mornings, after the papers have been printed and delivered. Two volunteers read the articles alternatively and though the program is recorded, no alterations are made so any errors, coughs, etc, go to air. the articles to be read, the only proviso being that the article must be read in its entirety. Some weeks it is very difficult to find enough suitable items. I also need to prepare a time sheet as there are strict schedules to adhere to. The program is in three sections so each one needs to be timed correctly. It is always a tense time as the end of each section approaches to get the timing right. Often the last item has to be deleted and a new quick one put in. The other reader arrives about an hour into the process to pre read their articles. A technical operator is the third member of the team. Liz is also our parish Secretary & a dedicated & faithful Eucharist Assistant, regularly helping out in services. Our church relies heavily on volunteers like Liz who do an important & greatly appreciated work. Liz Watkins reads the News our loud to the community through the radio for the visually impaired. Approximately once a month I present the program. Though it sounds an easy job to read articles, it takes me two hours to prepare for the program and another hour for recording. I have to select all The program has been running at 3MFM for just over a year. Vision Australia ran 2 day training programs for those interested in volunteering for this work. Liz Watkins

Page 6 Ba s s Coa st T idings Sp ring Thanks to all the Op Shop Volunteers Some of the Op Shop volunteers enjoying the thank-you meal. The Op Shop continues to make steady but unspectacular progress in its seventh year of operation. We have a wonderful group of 68 dedicated volunteers who week after week run our Op Shop taking turn about. Our total takings since opening in October 2004 have risen to $218,000 providing significant support to the running costs of the church as well as using 20% of the takings for welfare work. Each year we have a special thankyou dinner to recognise the valuable contribution the volunteers make. As always, it was a well attended, enjoyable evening. Our two Op Shop chairmen, Alan Price & Ross Smith, do a fantastic job in keeping things running smoothly. We are grateful to all who work so hard in this wonderful venture which is a blessing both to the community & to the church. The Op Shop is open from 10am to 4pm Thursday to Saturday & from 1:00pm to 2:30 pm Sundays. It is located in Cashin Street, Inverloch. Janette Elder our newbie in Wonthaggi. I am very grateful to both these ladies for the fulfilling Christian life I now lead. Janette Elder introduces herself to us: I was born in Leongatha & baptised and confirmed in the Leongatha Anglican Church. I left for Melbourne at 19 to attend secretarial College. I then worked for a Finance Company, the Transport Workers Union, an Engineering Business and finally the Victorian College of the Arts, Music School. During this time I attended St Pauls Cathedral sporadically. my mother whose health was deteriorating. At this time I met my husband and we married after my mother died. While living at Coronet Bay I became a home-carer, which I found the most rewarding of all my occupations. My Christian mentors were friends of my husbands - Mrs. Brenda Tooth who had been a missionary in Africa, but returned to Australia to marry a minister; and her sister Rosemary, a missionary working for Wycliffe translating the bible. I am very grateful to both these ladies for the fulfilling Christian life I now lead. My husband and I have now moved to Wonthaggi, and have settled in well. While at College I opened a ceramic gallery in Whitehorse Road, Deepdene with my mother who was an artist. After a bad car accident to the front of the shop, my mother wanted to retire to the seaside, and bought a house at Coronet Bay I continued working and travelled back and forth. During this period I became very lonely and married briefly, finally returning to look after

Newsletter T itle V olume 1, Is sue 1 Page 7 Youth Happenings Youth activities have taken a new turn in our church. After conversations with the leaders of our neighbouring Baptist Church, we have decided to work together with our Youth. This means that instead of each group getting together 5 or 6 young people, we can now get together 10 or 12 & do much more interesting activities. We hope & pray that it will grow & attract more & more young people. We meet roughly every 2 weeks at 5:30 on a Saturday. Activities include outings to the beach, walks, lots of fun games, & service activities to support the community & raise funds for others, such as the compassion child that we support in Brazil. The group is open to all young people year 7 & upwards. Our next activity will be a beach outing (probably to Wilsons Prom) on November the 13th. Following that, we will be doing some fundraising at the church s Annual Fete on November 26. Our final activity for the year will be Saturday the 11th of December. What is Cursillo? Cursillo is a movement of the church. Its purpose is to help those in the church understand their individual callings to be Christian Leaders. Leadership may be exercised in work situations, in the family and social life, in leisure activities, and within the Church environment. Leadership, in Cursillo, does not mean power over others, but influence on others; all of us need to be aware that we can exert a positive influence on those around us. The goal of Cursillo is the goal of the Church: to bring all to Christ. This is done when informed, trained leaders set out with the support of others having a similar commitment. Cursillo helps to renew and deepen Christian commitment. Cursillo is one of many renewal movements. Many people have said Cursillo provides an important learning experience, which causes many to feel like newly, made Christians with a purpose and with support. If you would like to know more about this movement, talk to the Parish Cursillo Coordinator, Peter Anderson, or one of the Church Wardens. They have all attended a Cursillo Three Day Weekend and are willing to share their views on this exciting movement. THE CURSILLO LOGO The National Secretariat adopted this symbol as the official logo for the Anglican Cursillo Movement of Australia, in October It was produced and funded by the Diocese of Rockhampton. The cross, with the square in the centre is called a quadrate cross. The vertical line of the cross represents our relationship with God our love and prayers to Him His love and blessings down to us. The horizontal line represents our reaching out to each other and the world in and through Christ. The square centre is perfectly balanced and represents the still point the heart of God where we find peace and calm perfect balance. The points of the square represent the 4 Gospels radiating out, sent into the world and beyond in the power of His Spirit. The Cursillo Logo The points of the square represent the 4 Gospels radiating out, sent into the world and beyond in the power of His Spirit.
